I'm going with basketball as well for ECU. ECU had David West committed when Hamrick in his infinite wisdom decided to fire Joe Dooley. West went to Xavier and ECU basketball continued to suck for years because of that decision. Just one of many Hammy decisions that cost ECU dearly.

He didn't actually sign a LOI with us but we had Eddie George committed to attend Marshall out of HS. But, his mother decided to pay for prep school and Ohio State picked him up. 03-banghead

For Vick it was down to Syracuse and Virginia Tech. McNabb went all in trying to get Vick to come to SU.

Quote:Reamon, who had helped guide Brooks from Newport News to the University of Virginia, helped Michael with his SATs and helped him and his family choose between Syracuse University and Virginia Tech. Reamon favored Virginia Tech, where he felt better guidance was available under Frank Beamer, who promised to redshirt him and provide the freshman needed time to develop. Reamon sold Michael on the school's proximity to family and friends, and Vick chose to attend Virginia Tech.

Different story then what I was told. Vick's cousin Marcellis Harris was a WR at ECU at time..and Steve Logan was one of the few that told him he could play QB

Yeah, that sucks royally. At least you didn't have to see him go to another college and flourish in super regionals, etc., though.

He would have stayed a UAB commit if you'd have given him an out clause if Mike Davis left...

Underwood saw and was impressed with Walter Payton, but he refused to offer Walter a scholarship because the experience of dealing with situations caused by having Willy Heidleberg (sorry about the spelling) and he didn't want to go through it again. I know that Walter did not get a scholarship offer from USM, but I don't know why.

He didn't get the offer because during the game he turned around and outran the defender backwards to the endzone. Our coaches called it "hotdogging" at the time. Now they call it hall of fame material.

Underwood was stupid if that story is true. I have heard it before, and if Underwood would have talked to any of us about Payton he would have found out that Payton was as far from being a hot dog as you could get. I don't recall such an incident and friends of mine who were on that CHS team have no recollection of Payton doing that. I also remember stories that PRCC refused to give Payton a scholarship which is a false story. Payton did try out for them, and he was offered a half scholarship which was the best they could offer him, so he needed a full scholarship and didn't take it. I confirmed the PRCC story with J.C. Arban and other school personal involved in the program at PRCC at the time. I didn't ask Walter about it because by the time I heard these rumors Walter was not easy to get time with. I do know Walter didn't get the scholarship offers you would think, and yes he was something in HS as well.

We had marcell dareus, as we were offering his twin brother demerius as well, but Alabama offered demerius on signing day to flip marcell, knowing demerius wouldn't qualify and they wouldn't have to honor it, but that marcell would have to honor his.

My understanding is that Wes Welker wanted to go to TU and even went so far as to ask Keith Burns for a scholarship but was turned down. If I'm wrong then I'm sure some one will correct me.

The starting QBs in the bowl games for both Arkansas and OSU this past season were committed to TU before changing their commits.

Can't speak on Eddie but Dwyane Wade didn't even have a scholarship offer from Marshall.

Quote:Because of academic issues and a late growth spurt, Dwyane Wade held three scholarship offers after a good career at Richards High School in Oak Lawn, Illinois. Only Marquette, Illinois State and DePaul saw a potentially productive player..

That is the same story I heard on Welker as well. I watched a short segment on him before the Super Bowl a few years ago where his mom or coach was sending letters and film to nearly every D1 college. They even mentioned Coach Burns telling him he wasnt D1 material.

I know we recruited him hard but I don't know if that was even true. Regardless we had David Garrard at the time anyway so it's not that huge of a loss really. The biggest commit we ever pissed away in any sport was far and away David West after Hamrick fired Dooley. They both went on to other places to win things like National titles and National Players of the Year.
