What Would You Do to Make Tigers More Relevant in a 100 Mile Circle?
This is something that bothers me when I am forced to travel away from Memphis and can't get games on the radio or TV? How would you try to extend the Tigers reach to the Tennessee River to Grenada, and about 2/3 of the way to Little Rock? I guess this is called "marketing". Examples:
1. Give radio stations free access to broadcast for the first two (2)years of a five (5) year contract for football and m/w basketball;
2. Take football and basketball practices to selected local venues such as high school football fields and gyms, respectively;
3. Allow non-revenue sports, including baseball and softball, to have regular season games at selected locations, e.g., Pringles Field in Jackson.
4. Allow the Pom Squad to go to multiple venues to be "Performing Ambassadors" for our school.

I recognize that all of these have inherent risks and problems, but what are the possibilities? I welcome all comments.

not to be cynical because I think there are definitely things the AD can do to help but the short answer is "WIN". Everybody loves a winner.

We have won big in both football and basketball in the past and we are no better than if we had never had those season. We have to be proactive and address the problem. Knoxville is over 385 miles away and by definition we would be less than 100.

#1 normally isn't in the school's control. many times the school doesn't own their media rights, the conference does, so may not be possible.
#4 the school already does this, but generally for a donation (price). They have different levels of donation suggestions based on how long and how many members would attend.

Don't take this to mean I'm just shutting down everything you say. I agree we need better marketing to hit the current non-fans and the causal fans. As it is we have great marketing for the most involved fans, which seems counter-productive at times. Definitely need more to reach out to those not already in the fold.

I agree 100%

1. Satellite radio
2. Yes, take the show around town
3. It wouldn't hurt for the baseball Tigers to play at Jackson, I remember them playing at Millington a few times
4. Pom Pom girls everywhere!

We need to take our brand up a notch, from the area that the radio signals reach, whatever it takes, to the gotigersgo website being updated daily, with highlights from games the night before and stats and box scores and hoping that the Big East will get us on the big boy tv networks where anyone who has cable can watch the games, or at least be on television like we were a few years ago. In football and basketball, have the Big East linked into all of the video boards for highlights of other games going on in the conference or around the country real time.

If the University wants to charge for internet viewing of live games, I don't think many people really care to pay, it's just that you have got to make it worth the money. Give me something.

I certainly agree with that. As you may know, I think it would strengthen our brand somewhat by simply paying more attention to details.

All about football. If you make this a football powerhouse, everyone west of the TN River to Memphis would be a Tiger fan.

I live just north of Grenada MS. We are out in the Country,so no CSS.We do Have DISH with the Sports Channels so I can watch the Tigers when DISH carries them.WE are too far south to pick up WREG on the radio and we can no longer listen to them on the Internet. I do pick them up sometimes on Front row sports or what ever it is.It's a shame that you can hardly follow the Tigers even if you live just 90 miles from Memphis. Hope the BE contract changes some of this.I miss the old days when I lived in Memphis and went to all the Coliseum games.That's the only thing I miss about Memphis.

Put the games on TV! The casual fan will follow a team they can watch. There were more Tiger fans where I live about 10 years ago when all the games that were not televised on a major national network were televised on channel 30.

one of the reasons we have never made much of an impact outside of Shelby/Desoto/Fayette/Tipton is that it will take a long time to make a profit on the West TN/ North MS fans ... and the people in charge of the Athletic Department are not local people or Tiger fans ..and they are under constant pressure to 'balance the budget'

There was nothing in it for RC to plant seeds that take time, effort and money that take 20 years to blossom..

Advertise Poucer's Pals on Nick and Cartoon Network. Have Pouncer do personal appearances in towns to see the kids. Give away tickets at the appearances.

Wouldn't hurt to have a hat for sale outside The city limits.

Favorite game of mine is to go to a local 'Lids' type store and ask for a Tigers' hat.

Usually, they look at me like I'm high.

It's a trade off though.

You can't find tigers hats past Covington, but some of those sweet west-TN redneck trucker hats can't be found anywhere in the Memphis city limits.

Been looking for a "Free Hat Limit One" hat at every gas station in Shelby county.

Sadly no dice.

No dice.
