Your comment about youth is off target when comparing the Broncos to the Zips. From Gozips.com....."Akron entered the season as the ninth-youngest teams in the nation, with 16 players having a total of 15 seasons of collegiate experience (0.94 years/letters won per player). In fact, 12 of 16 players have one year or less in the experience column prior to 2012-13." Akron expects to win with a young team and not use it as an excuse. In this game the Broncos are the "Senior" team.

You mean like every pretty much every time we've played them for the past six of seven years or so?

I'm keeping my expectations low only because so many of these guys are so young. I like their moxy but know that the MAC is a veteran league, for the most part. These guys will make some mistakes that end up costing them a few times. We also need to remember how hard it is to win on the road for any team.

That's why I couldn't vote for 10 conference wins. Almost but no cigar. Yet, it would not shock me if this team could accomplish that.

Their bench might be young and inexperienced...but there is nothing about marshal, abreu, Gilliam, walsh, harney and treadwell that screams young. They do have some frosh and new guys in their rotation, but none are their top 5 or 6.

Marshall Sr. vs. Whittington RS Jr.- Edge Marshall, but not a big edge. Marshall has not developed like I expected, and Whittington has developed exponentially.

Gilliam Sr. vs. Hutch Sr.- Edge Hutch, but Hutch can tank like nobodies business. He has to have a solid game.

Treadwell Jr. vs. Paul Fr. - Edge Treadwell, but not a big edge. Both average 10 pts a game. Treadwell has shown he can own us athletically, but that was against last years band of underachievers. I suspect Paul and his length will give Treadwell some problems.

Abreu Jr. vs Richie Soph- Big edge Abreu. His 9pts per game is nice, but his 6 assists is more impressive. Good defender who gets a lot of steals going the other way.

Walsh Jr. (Xavier transfer) vs. Pokley- Enormous edge to Walsh. Has size, can score, can rebound, and is a 46% shooter from three. Poke is simply not hard for teams to defend.

Nick Harney, Junior, comes off the bench and averages almost 10ppg in limited duty (usually around 15 min. per game). 51% shooter and a decent rebounder.

Hawk vs. Dombrot- To say that Dombrot owns Hawk would be an understatement. Furthermore, there isn't a venue in the MAC where we play worse than at Akron.

We probably match up better with Akron this year than in previous years, with the exception of the DK era, where we matched up well, but were simply outcoached.

EA2 and Chipdip----

Treadwell and Harney are half way thru their second season of eligibility. Listing them as Juniors is accurate as far as the number of years attending UA but they are still young players. In the Zips rotation there are times when they have a soph and four frosh on the floor at the same time. The advantage I see with Akron is that the Broncos (and many other MAC teams) have no one to match up with Forsythe.

I agree with your comment on Kool. Since his graduation the Broncos have not had played with confidence against the MAC east teams.

Akron has seven Jr-Sr with eight frosh & soph players. Six of the seven players with most minutes played are Jr-Sr.
http://www.gozips.com/sports/mbkb/2012-13/roster

WMU also has seven Jr-Sr (three walkon) with eleven frosh & soph players. Only THREE of the top eight WMU players with most minutes are Jr-Sr. Four of those top eight are frosh.

Treadwell and Harney were in the top 8 rotation for the team that won the regular season MAC title. Wmu can boast nothing of the sort.

If you add up the number of games started by each teams players....the disparity is huge.

Dambrot has figured out how to get some of his new players valuable mins. Other that that, this isn't even a discussion in regards to experience and expectations.

Forsythe is REALLY good. Marshall's backup might be a top 5 center in the league. Or at least he will be by the end of the year.

Cleveland.com has a different view on this.
Quote: Elton Alexander, The Plain Dealer - January 08, 2013 -
Experience is key in the Mid-American Conference and no team in the league can match that of Akron and Ohio. While each has been less than stellar in nonconference play, the fact remains when it comes to the bright lights of the MAC Tournament final -- or the glare of the postseason -- Akron and OU arguably have more experience than the rest of the MAC combined.

That makes the Zips and Bobcats not only favorites to win the regular-season title, but also favorites to play for the MAC Tournament crown in March.

Seven Zips have played in a MAC Tournament title game, and three have played in the NCAA Tournament.

Since the Zips play in the MAC final every year, even if they played 7 freshman the following year Elton could make the same statement. Let's settle the argument by saying that the Zips have the 9th youngest team in division 1 with two experienced seniors in tonights starting lineup.
