I find it funny that when something like Barbers get positive national press, everybody is excited, but when the Civil Rights Institute gets positive press, it sparks off a lots of negativity.

That's because it is from that attack.

RE: Birmingham makes 'Today' show list of six hot places to travel in 2013...
I went today and closed the place down. Well worth the visit.

I looked for the aforementioned details. There were only alluded to. There was mention of "off the record" meetings between white/black business leaders, that a vote was taken to change the form of city government, and allusions to a dispute about commisioner's terms. I didn't read or watch/hear anything about the President or Attorney General asking MLK to stand down, that Bull Connor was in fact a lame duck, etc.

I'm not sure why though, because that gives the full context of the white clergy's letter to King and his response in his letter from Birmingham jail. I think that context makes the letters and the positions both espouse all the more interesting.

Good book on the subject "Blessed Are the Peacemakers" by S. Jonathan Bass. Friend of mine and history professor at Samford University. Focuses on the 7 ministers that the Letter was written too.

Not a big military history. Sure, there's the civil rights stuff, but not too sure how many people would come from afar to walk through a museum that's bankrupt. I just don't see a big tourist draw.

Does the fact that the museum has fallen under financial hardship take away from the experience that tourist have there?

It probably does since if they operated in the black they could add other items or exhibits. The fact that it loses money shows that its not a top 6 tourist attraction. If it were that bug of a draw it would be able to function without city resources.

Does the Statue of Liberty use public funds? Mount Rushmore?

Not sure, and I'm also not sure if they charge admission either. I've been to the Starue of Liberty, but it was 12 years ago so I don't remember.

& I might have misspoke on the factual side part.

In my opinion, I believe it isn't a reason by itself to be considered a top 6 destination place globally.

Now, had they said top 6 historic places to visit in 2013, I would not have found any problems with it.

Saying it is one of 6 hot places to travel is a stretch, IMO.

I agree with you and I've been to the museum. If it was such a tourist attraction then they wouldn't have to beg for more money from the city like they did last year.

Interesting museum, sure. Top 6 tourist attraction it is not.

Because most of the museum's expenses paid through private donations and most groups attend the museum free of charge. The museum is free on Sundays and also on holidays such as MLK Day, Juneteenth, and etc. Would I consider it a top 6 spot yes! My grandparents and their siblings were apart of the movement and they lived though the civil rights era over in Birmingham, my parents witnessed it, my family had a direct impact on not only my family but the majority of black families in not only in Birmingham but all over the South, so it's a major destination for a lot of people. Can it be ran better as far as generating revenue? Yes!

Actually, the city pays for 60% of the museum, and that's before they begged for more money.

I doubt the city of Birmingham is begging people in Opelka to help pay for the insitution, and by the way you used the word begging, it says alot.

I lived in Birmingham for over 12 years, so I'm sure that I paid for a lightbulb in the place. Would you rather me say they asked for the money? Either way they were short funds because apparently it's not a top 6 tourist attraction.

I'll repeat. No one said it was a top 6 attraction. There was a subjective ranking of the top 6 things to see this year and it made the list. Actually, the Institute didn't make the list. Birmingham did because of the anniversary. Read the article.

But you keep ranting regardless of the facts.

Anniversary or not, Birmingham or the Civil Rights Institute would not be a top 6 place to visit. Birmingham is a nice place to live, and there are a lot of things I like about Birmingham - but a tourist destination it is not in the least.

Birmingham is a great place to visit. It's an objective truth.

Some of the best food in the world: Frank's joints, Jinsei, epic bbq, etc. (I've traveled and EATEN extensively... TRUST ME)

Excellent weather

Scenic areas nearby lots of hiking, etc.

Epic golf courses

A nice (recently expanded) zoo and botanical garden

Great microbrew (Good People)

History (civil rights, industrial, civil war, etc.; The civil rights institute is just one of the great places to visit in this regard)

The arguments in this thread are another example of the silly that permeates this board...

Birmingham wasn't a city until after the Civil War..

i'm a history buff, so the civil rights institute was definitely interesting to me. but as a tourist attraction or subjective "hot place to travel," the civil rights institute, nor the city, are top 6 nationally. i don't even think taking into the consideration the anniversary would make either one worth visiting nationally in 2013 - if you have no connection to either. although it was nice, there are much better museums, or "institutes" if you like, out there to see in this country.

birmingham is a nice city, i enjoyed living there, and there are many good things about it, as others have detailed. however, it's not somewhere the average american is ever going to visit as a "tourist attraction" or "hot place to travel." unless maybe you are a hard core golfer, civil rights buff and/or participant, or motorsports/cars fan.

I realized how good the zoo is in Birmingham after I visited Atlanta's. Birmingham Zoo is much better.

We get it.

Go spend your tourist dollars elsewhere, by all means.

I bet wherever you go, though, there'll be some local who doesn't think it's all that special.
