Do we stick with 9?
Once the split occurs we will be left with the following basketball.

Cincinnati
Connecticut
Memphis
Houston
SMU
Temple
Tulane
UCF
USF

Does ECU get an all sport invite now? Do we add anyone else?

I just can't see an all sport East - West conference, plus I wouldn't want SMU to be in the West.

Why leave these western basketball powers (SDSU, UNM, UNLV) out when they could be part of our conference?

Do you want to hold on to Boise and San Diego St? Do you want them to go back to the MWC and give away the edge we have on the final BCS bowl slot? The best thing we can do now is form the best mid major conference in the nation and try to attract more of the western teams like Fresno, UNLV, Nevada and essentially kill off the competition.

Houston
Tulane
SMU
Boise St
San Deigo St
Fresno
UNLV
Nevada

that would be a nice division in football and basketball. The Big East has a real opportunity here to shape a great all sports conference.

How about splitting up and forming better regional leagues. Houston and Uconn have nothing in common.

The more teams you add the smaller the cut will be. You do want to get to 12 for A football Championship game. This brings more money to the table.

If you did this you would have to go True west & true east teams. So the teams out west can play in all sports. If you want it to stabilize, and try to keep everyone happy.

Of course you go to 12 for all sports.
Certainly ECU will be included.
You add UMASS plus to get to 11 plus N.Ill.

All sports west coast will not work.

While I would like Northern Illinois in the conference because it if fairly close to my home, NIU should not be considered.

NIU football, and its successful 10 year run, still draws 15K a game. NIU basketball draws about 1,200 a game.

Playing basketball in empty arenas and stadiums doesn't help build the conference.

Because you aren't "thinkin outside the box". The following setup would probably get us the best media deal we could get as well as minimize the travel for the Olympic sports. It would be no worse than the traveling the CUSA schools had to endure and in many ways better. IMHO, it could work. No hybrid !!

18 teams
9 teams each division
Football
8 division games
1-2 cross divsion games
2-3 OOC games
Basketball
16 division home and home games
4 cross division games
8 OOC games

All other Olympic sports similar to basketball.

It would be a solid football and basketball conference and would most likely keep the conference just behind the BIG FIVE and ahead of the other conferences in the pecking order.

Since BYU and Air Force do not seem to want to move, they are left out of this scenario.
Teams are interchangeable depending on situations.

Why are we stuck with ******* Tulane????? If we are starting over, then give me:

East:
UConn
Temple
ECU
Charlotte
USF
UCF

West:
UC
Memphis
GSU
USM/Tulane
Houston
SMU

The best fb and bb that we can get. I threw in GSU and Charlotte because of markets and to tie the league together.

RE: Do we stick with 9?
Since UMass was brought up, there's been some articles in the Boston papers re: how much red ink they bled in just one year playing at Gillette Stadium (where they play rent free) and concerns from faculty and some students that they should drop back down to FCS

http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2012/1...story.html

UMass alums wanted to move up, but at least this year didn't end up attending many of those games. They were hoping for an average of 20K, they got 7K. Blame has been put on not playing regional schools as the closest MAC school is Buffalo. UConn would be the only regional school they would end up with in a new conference.

That said, they're going to keep at it, hoping that recruiting improves.

THIS finishes the deal, makes us the best possible conference, and makes us as stable as is possible...!

If we don't do this, and we add more in the east, and keep the west as FB only... we will end up destroyed in a few years. Would just be more 'hybrid' nonsense with western FB schools that know they don't really belong.

Lucikly, we are in a perfect spot right now. Three western additions seals the deal and gets perfect balance. No one has to be tossed to make it work.

Could not agree MORE. I see nothing but opportunity here - for everyone involved, including the CYO-7 (which I actually admire a great deal).

One thing I'd add, which may not endear me to Cincy and UConn fans: I'd like to see a GOR or something damn close. Maybe my decades of being a Pirate fan has given me a hyper sensitivity to instability, but I'd want to lock up this league as much as possible. Let the Power 5 cannibalize themselves as they wish. Let the four weaker conferences do what they can to improve themselves.

I'd understand why Cincy and UConn fans would be averse to this, as they obviously see greater opportunity on the horizon.

But if this can be done, a national, Great 16, all sports conference has a better chance of creeping closer to the power 5 than being homogenized with the other 4.

RE: Do we stick with 9?
I think the idea of adding truly western teams as all sports is a knee jerk reaction to losing some good basketball schools. UNLV and New Mexico are certainly good basketball adds, but not worth the tradeoff of lowering the football to even lower depths.

I say make ECU all sports, then add quality western football only as needed. More defections are likely on the way, so lets hang tight and not shoot ourselves in the foot.

No GOR. The purpose of this league will be to collect the majority of the top mid majors in the country under one banner---all schools ready to move to the next level. We wnat to be the gang of five league that every school wants to be in and the league that is the pipeline to the power conferences. No reason to cap anyones ceiling. When one moves on to a power confernece, we just plug in the strongest mid-major available, regardless of location.

I may be proven wrong, but I really don't think the western teams will become all sports members.
