With all the talk about the man of year, etc., it got me to thinking.

Who would be your UAB person of the year for 2012?

My vote would probably go for Brian Mackin, followed by Coach Shoop.

Coach Marla Townsend

Justin Craft

Mackin and Garrison were doing their jobs. Justin went above and beyond to be the voice of a movement.

That failed to gain steam

Men's Soccer Head Coach, Mike Getman. Another trip to the NCAA tournament for UAB's most consistently strong program.

Regardless, and perhaps I'm just too young, but I've never seen an advocate like that for our university that wasn't on the payroll.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to downplay what Mackin and Garrison meant to our university this year...perhaps it sounded that way. I just think that it was refreshing to see the birth of a grassroots effort, that while it didn't gain a perceived head of steam, I don't think is completely dead.

BlazerPhil. He barely made it into college the first time around, and it was an even closer call getting out. Then through some miraculous turn of events he was allowed into graduate school at UAB and completed his Masters degree in May.

UAB professor and 2012 TED fellow Sarah Parcak, Ph.D.

For athletics, it has to be Mike Getman/Brian Shoop/Marla Townsend... you get UAB to the post-season, you deserve kudos. A special nod to Getman for also assisting with two years of excellent NCAA College Cup action... it's not everyday UAB hosts the NCAA championship in a sport.

I'm torn between Coach Shoop and Townsend.
