RE: Stadium Question(Don't shoot me)
All my life I have heard Alabama people say, "We don't want to be like Atlanta". I guess this is another way we are "not like Atlanta".

Sounds rather wasteful to me.

More than 2/3 of it will be paid by the Falcons. The team is also responsible for any cost overruns. Taxpayers (via hotel/motel tax) are on the hook for about $300 million.

RE: Stadium Question(Don't shoot me)
I am not sure about that one. "Belief" might be better to answer it.

I just think it is "old" (relatively speaking) and some of the events(FF, SB) that would be attractable are being lost to other "newer" venues.

Because Atlanta has money and a clue. Right now, money, land and labor are cheap, and the Falcons are willing.

In 2026, the oldest parts of Legion Field will be 100 years old. You certainly can't say we didn't get our money's worth out of that investment. As things stand now, it will still be the only major facility for football and other events available in the metro B'ham area at that time. If UAB is still playing there is yet to be determined.

Dome opened in 1992. I went to a Ga State game this year and thought the facility was very nice, but my only comparisons are to places like Legion Field, Scott Field, Sanford Stadium, and Williams-Brice. If the local taxpayers were paying a larger portion I would think a new stadium to be a huge waste of money.

RE: Stadium Question(Don't shoot me)
In another semi-derail direction, Kennesaw State University built a big on-campus soccer stadium and then announced they were starting an FCS football team.

Maybe we can get Attalla to build some seats over at West Campus. Tell them our soccer team needs the extra seats 03-razz

I imagine that Atlanta is competing with Dallas and the Cowboy stadium.

You guys are comparing NFL facility needs to college needs. No comparison. NfL can afford it.

The Falcons have the demand for season tickets. Also, it will be 5 years before the new stadium opens it's doors. Roddy will be be near retirement and Ryan will be the old veteran QB opening a new house.

If you got the money honey, I got the time. I love UAB but I'm not doing it for free. If I hit the next power ball then we will talk.

As the manager of the GA Dome said after the storm damaged it, "We have 200 events scheduled for our facility, and we must get it fixed before they make other arrangements". They fixed it and now have agreed to replace it in this decade. It will only be "a waste of money" if it does not create sufficient income from "conventioneering visiting firemen" and sports fans paying taxes in the metro-city to balance the costs. Those visitors (including many from Alabama) will probably also buy lots of lottery tickets and "scratch off" cards to help pay for the "Hope fund" and public education in GA.

In 2020 Atlanta will have its second "dome" and B'ham will still have the present BJCC and Legion Field. Which will be more competitive in attracting conventions of larger size?

What would 200+ major conventions do for the city's "Bottom line" of revenue? Jeffco chose to go in another direction.

The SUBURBS chose to go in another direction and now they will say it was all Birmmingham's fault. Where is that Jaklegg who said that they had an alternate to MAPS that I'm still waiting on. dumbasses 03-banghead

So what you are saying is that UAB cannot afford an on campus stadium?

I beg to differ

No. What he is saying is the NFL can pay cash money for basically anything they want. UAB cannot, and will not be able to do that at any point in time. Why do you keep arguing with people on this board about the OCS? Everybody here wants it and is aware of what the issues with it are.

RE: Stadium Question(Don't shoot me)
If the argument is the Legion Field (3.3 miles from Campus) then why would you even consider moving games to the Hoover Met which is 16.2 miles from campus? In my opinion that wouldn’t make attendance any better.
