People like this need to be beaten to a pulp...
SEIU Workers at LAX Threaten Thanksgiving Eve Strike

LAX employees are threatening to strike over being denied healthcare on Thanksgiving eve, the busiest travel holiday of the year.

A coalition of labor and community leaders is calling for the protest of alleged violations by LAX contractor Aviation Safeguards for breaking a healthcare contract with the airport earlier this year.

Andrew Gross-Gaitan, the director of the Southern California Airports Division, told KNX 1070 News Radio that Aviation Safeguards left more than 400 LAX workers without affordable family health care when it failed to comply with the city’s Living Wage Ordinance.

“When people’s lives are on the line, their family members are on the line, they’re not going to be able to enjoy their Thanksgiving,” said Andrew Gross-Gaitan.

“This is really a critical moment for thousands of workers.

“We’re looking at thousands of workers who may face their family benefits being cut,” Andrew Gross-Gaitan added.

“There is one worker whose wife is literally dying of liver cancer, and this has been going on for close to a year. The families of these workers are really in crisis.”

As many as 1,000 airport workers and union supporters are expected to march on Century Boulevard just as an estimated 1.8 million passengers are expected to travel through LAX over the holiday weekend,CBS reports.

Last May, an estimated 1,200 LAX employees protesting unfair labor laws, picketed outside the airport and prevented passengers from entering.

Andrew Gross-Gaitan said there is definite potential for severe disruptions to airport operations during the protest.

“It’s entirely possible there will be significant travel delays,” he said.

Martin Terrones, Communications Coordinator for the labor union United Service Workers West, downplayed the event.

“It’s not really a strike or a walkout,” he told L.A. Weekly.

“But it is going to be an action none the less.”

Disgusting. Hope everyone who walks out gets fired. Lots of people looking for jobs, these would work just fine.

So people should be forced to work against their will? I personally wouldn't partake in such a job action, and have crossed a picket line in the past, but why should they be "beaten to a pulp"? The owners of the businesses get a free pass to join together and form organizations like the US Chamber of Commerce, why can't the workers do the same? If the employers don't like it, don't give in and hire scabs. Not a particularly difficult situation to overcome.

So if the employees want to leverage the employers by holding them hostage at the busiest time if the year, then I guess you wouldn't have a problem with employers locking out the employees a few weeks before Christmas.

I'm not sure what's the strawman. What did I misrepresent from the original post? Did it not say "People like this need to be beaten to a pulp"? Or are you arguing that businesses shouldn't be allowed to organize into trade groups like the NFIB and the USCoB?

If these people don't want to go to work, that's their perogative. I always hear "if you don't like it, go work somewhere else" when it comes to employer treatment of employees. So, some employees have decided they don't want to work under certain conditions and they "should be beaten to a pulp"? What's the alternative? I understand it was hyperbole, but I don't get the point, at all, of the original post if it's anything other than "they should go to work and like it"

If I'm trying to fly out of LAX on Thanksgiving Eve with my family, and am prevented or delayed by some turd Union Thug blocking an entrance or interfering with passengers trying to get to their flight, I'm going to be pissed.

Not very smart to delay third parties, who dont have a dog in the hunt so to speak.

You should be pissed at the company who didn't have anyone there to work. If there are so many people clamoring for jobs, shouldn't be a problem, right? That's what I hear every time a union threatens to strike, anyway.

Like this?

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- A group representing the 450 workers of Aviation Safeguards – a contractor providing wheelchair, skycap, baggage handling and ticket verification for airlines at LAX – says that company employees have no intention of joining the SEIU's planned protest at LAX on Wednesday afternoon, and called on the union leadership to back down from its threat to disrupt holiday travel on the busiest travel day of the year.

The employees, who are signatories to this press release, allege that the union is bringing in outsiders who don't work at LAX to be part of a protest along Century Boulevard that could impact the ability of travelers to get to the airport.

"We petitioned to leave the SEIU almost a year ago, and the contract ended. And now they're bringing in outsiders to block travelers who are just trying to get home for the holidays," said Frederick McNeil. "It's ridiculous. People need to understand that SEIU doesn't speak for the employees at Aviation Safeguards."

Recent media reports wrongly suggested that employees would be "walking off the job" on Wednesday. "That couldn't be further from the truth," said Andres Cazares, an Aviation Safeguards employee since 1993. "We have no beef with the company or the airport. Our beef is with the union. Most of the protesters on Wednesday will not even be LAX workers. They don't work here and they don't know our company. The employees of Aviation Safeguards are planning to work, and we are extremely confident that our colleagues will be there for every shift."

Dissatisfied with the SEIU's representation, a majority of the company's employees signed petitions in December 2011 to leave the union. "We voted to cancel our agreement with SEIU because they took our money and did nothing for us," said Edgar Rivas, a security guard who has worked for Aviation Safeguards since 2006. "Now we earn more money, and have more health care options. Honestly, we're so glad to be free of SEIU."

SEIU officials questioned the validity of the employees' petition to decertify the union, even though union officials reviewed the petitions and never challenged them. The petitions were also reviewed by City officials. "We're happy to hold another election as long as it's independently run," said Chris Colmenares. "People need to know – and that includes all the politicians in City Hall – that the SEIU won't agree to an election because they know the outcome will not be favorable to them. We just wish the SEIU would leave us alone and let us do our job at the airport."

That sentiment is supported by senior management at the company. "Our employees are free to rejoin SEIU at any time," said Regional Vice President Joe Conlon. "We respect our employees' right to choose representation and would not stand in the way of a vote."

SEIU has had a troubled track record at LAX in recent years. Another contractor, Calop Aeroground Services, decertified the SEIU in 2010. A federal judge rejected SEIU's challenge to the decertification process.

"Several more contracts, with other companies, are due to expire on November 30," said Ashley Atkinson, a dispatcher at Aviation Safeguards. "Wednesday's planned demonstration is designed to pressure contractors at LAX to sign SEIU agreements instead of letting workers choose. That's not democracy. It's the same old bullying."

Atkinson points out that employees at Aviation Safeguards immediately started taking home significantly more pay after the departure of SEIU. Collectively, it is estimated the employees will take home more than $2 million more a year in wages than they did while being represented by the union. As a result, the company will also pay $300,000 more per year in state and federal payroll taxes.

"It's really outrageous that the SEIU says things that just aren't true," said Sherly Varela, a screener at Aviation Safeguards since 2008. "They say that our company doesn't comply with the City's Living Wage Ordinance even though the documentation is there to prove them wrong. The union just didn't pay any attention to us." Employees at Aviation Safeguards want to assure the public that operations at the terminals where they work will be fully staffed if the protest proceeds. According to Jennifer Garcia, "We just wish the union and all the other outsiders would leave us alone, leave the travelers alone, and let us do our work."

If that's the case, I don't see what the problem is. The original article didn't say anything about what the second article does. If they aren't actually going on strike, what's the problem? If the SEIU people aren't actual employees, aren't on strike, and aren't taking flights out of LAX, then the LAPD shouldn't let them impede people on private property.

Here's another disgusting SEIU story. A judge was asked by The NLRB to require a Connecticut nursing home to rehire union workers involved in a labor dispute, including goons that sabotaged patient charts as they went out on strike.

NLRB sues to reinstate union saboteurs at nursing homes

Quote:The director of the facility in Newington, Conn., told police that “the name tags on the patients’ doors for the Alzheimer’s ward were mixed up. The photos attached to the medical records for these patients were removed, further complicating, but not making impossible, the identification of the patients. Also, dietary blue stickers affixed to the door name tags were removed.” Some medical equipment also went missing.

If some union goon did this to one of my relatives, the scum would have a black eye and a broken nose. That kind of sabotage can cost somebody his life. (Maybe they were just practicing for when Obamacare is fully implemented and 'those old people' will have no care, because they are not useful).

I think the families of all the patients should band together and sue the shiite out of the SEIU local. Still, these SEIU goons are scumbags of the lowest order.

My opinion? Hostess's actions came into play... Basically, a company told the unions to f'off...

so now this private company told their Union members... You want to walk off the job, you go right ahead, the unemployment rate is at 7.9%... I'm pretty sure we can find qualified people to do what you waqnt.
