RE: WKU vs Troy game thread
Laying here in bed going over our game with UL....

1) Troy had 34 first downs to ULs 15

2) Total yards Troy- 588.....UL 389

3) 3rd down conversions Troy- 12-21....UL-5-15

4) 4th down conversions UL 0-0..... Troy 0-2 ( both of our 4th down conversions were in the red zone so those were 2 scores left on the field)

5) Turnovers... UL-0.... Troy 3 UL scores on two of the three turnovers, the third turnover was a humble on the 7 yard line when we were getting ready to score so that's another 7 points left on the field and 14 points given up to UL)

6) Time of possession UL- 27:49....Troy- 32:11

Troy won the game with UL in stats just not the score which matters most. We left a potential 14 points ( at minimum 6 points if we went for field goals) on the field with not making those 4th and shorts deep in UL territory. We gave UL 14 off turnovers ( one turnover was a humble in UL territory and they ran it back 60 yards for a TD) and left another potential 7 on the field on a humble on UL 7 yard line in 4th quarter.

Turnovers are part of the game and UL capitalized on them and they played the better game in that aspect. But if you take away our turnovers. And say we went for field goals on those 2 4th and shorts Troy would have won the game 30-23. Even with our humble on ULs 7 yard line.

I've been saying this all week... I'm not saying we will beat WKU because we have not stopped the damn turnovers. but if Troy stops the turnovers in our game with WKU we win.

RE: WKU vs Troy game thread
Almost everyone admits Thursday night crowds are bad - in most venues, even some major ones. So why do schools do it - ruining a gameday Saturday and all its pageantry and fun, inconveniencing fans (many of whom just can't make the drive), destroying tailgate possibilities and severely hurting business community income?

In this case, perhaps the biggest game of the season is going to be pretty much overlooked (there's at least one major I-A game on at the same time) nationally, and the school is going to look small-time with a sparse crowd, many of whom will arrive late.

For the "exposure"? Come on! This game is on ESPNU, which many cable systems don't even include on their basic tiers, and the lowest rated of the sports channels (which aren't rated highly in any case). These games usually feature commentators who speak as if they got the roster 10 minutes before the game, don't know the name of the band and mispronounce the coach's name.

I've seen Birmingham look horrible on many a Thursday night game. Orlando looked pretty bleak a week or two ago. Tallahassee could not even sell out. Our conference brothers have been embarrassed with empty seats on Thursday night TV. Even our Oklahoma State game didn't sell out (Friday).

Just say "No,", Troy! It's just not worth it.

When the game is on the flagship network and is the only one on, I am for Thursday night games. However, the way this one is being treated angers me for the reasons BMarkey stated.

Everyone knows turnovers are a big factor. Unfortunately there's no guarantee we won't cough it up three times in the first half and allow them to get some quick scores. That's been our MO so far. I think we can hang with these guys if we play disciplined football - I just haven't seen a whole lot to suggest it's getting better. I do think we match up well in talent and athleticism, just not in discipline.

I don't understand what's been going on with the guys to make them so careless with the football. One game sure, woops...but week after week? You'd think they'd have it in the back of their mind, "hold on to the football" by now.

ESPN has to have filler for ESPNU every night of the week. They could do women's underwater basketweaving, or they could have a NCAA D1 football game. Assuming the costs for them are about the same, then of course they're going to opt for football. We may not have a huge amount of viewers, but we still will have some.

As it relates to our programs- we can either have no/little coverage on Saturday or we can have the #2 spot on Thursday night. Neither are great options, but I'd rather have some visibility then none. It's up to us to make ourselves look good and get the attendance up and put a good product on the field.

Until we build a better brand out of our league (and this year was a step), then we really have no leg to stand on.

Nothing is won "easily", especially not this year in the SBC. WKU seems mighty confident in a W tonight, this could be the night it bites them in the arse.

most western fans know very well we're on the road in a game troy fans realize is a bowl game for them. 2 home losses in conference eliminates them from winning the conference. lanny breakly is the dean of sunbelt coaches. he'll be ready.

RE: WKU vs Troy game thread
I'm worried about Jakes being able to overcome the mental part of his knee injury. If he's physically ready, they'll play him. But, as anyone that's had a knee injury knows, overcoming the mental part is as challenging if not more. I trust Taggart to make the best decision as to who plays at QB. If Jakes struggles, I wouldnt be surprised to see Mauro in pretty quickly.

That being said, this game scares me. We'll have a letdown at some point, and this seems like the perfect time to have one.

Troy 28
WKU 17

PROVE ME WRONG!! GO TOPS!!!!

have you ever coached a sport in your life?

have you ever been around 18-23 year old athletes?

of course they're confident. do you want troy players going into this game not believing they'll win? of course not.

this group of players are confident. some of them played on an 0-12 team. they've now won some games. that breeds confidence.

willie taggart voted his team number one preseason LAST YEAR coming off a 2-10 season and many chuckles were had at his expense. watch willie's interview. he gives much respect. but make no mistake. he's a driven young man.

you folks expect everyone to kiss the rings and kowtow in humble submission. athletes don't work that way.

the fans know this will be a ballgame just like we knew it wouldn't be easy in jonesboro. and it wasn't. but we feel like we have a shot in this game.

RE: WKU vs Troy game thread
I am looking forward to this one. Troy is the team that I thought in preseason might surprise everyone and win the league. I've seen WKU and know what they do well. This should be a really good game.

WKU's method is to play very good defense with that front 4 while running the ball and being very efficient on offense. Troy will fling it all over the field and if they don't turn it over they are hard to beat.

As with most games, it all comes down to turnovers. If Troy can overcome their turnover issues to the point of committing no more than one turnover I think they will pull out a close win at home. The problem is that they can't afford any more than that because WKU is not likely to help them out by giving them the ball much.

I think WKU will win easily, but I'm rooting for Troy to put one on them.

Nothing is won "easily", especially not this year in the SBC. WKU seems mighty confident in a W tonight, this could be the night it bites them in the arse.

fanof49ASU is an asu fan....as his name implies.

one western fan predicted a bunch of sacks. show proof of any other western fan that seems 'mighty confident'

most western fans know very well we're on the road in a game troy fans realize is a bowl game for them. 2 home losses in conference eliminates them from winning the conference. lanny breakly is the dean of sunbelt coaches. he'll be ready.

It doesn't really matter what us fans think. The vids I've seen show an extremely confident WKU group of players and coaches. Are they "over confident"? We'll see in a few short hours.

Now que a random poster to say "what do you expect them to say? We're gonna lose".

have you ever coached a sport in your life?

have you ever been around 18-23 year old athletes?

of course they're confident. do you want troy players going into this game not believing they'll win? of course not.

this group of players are confident. some of them played on an 0-12 team. they've now won some games. that breeds confidence.

willie taggart voted his team number one preseason LAST YEAR coming off a 2-10 season and many chuckles were had at his expense. watch willie's interview. he gives much respect. but make no mistake. he's a driven young man.

you folks expect everyone to kiss the rings and kowtow in humble submission. athletes don't work that way.

the fans know this will be a ballgame just like we knew it wouldn't be easy in jonesboro. and it wasn't. but we feel like we have a shot in this game.
You're nailing my point. BTW...yes and yes. I've had first hand experience of watching kids, who are confident over their achievements, get carried away with it to the point that they lose focus and pay the price. Is this happening right now on a bus to Troy? Once again, we'll find out in a few short hours.
