Jarnell Stokes signing elsewhere was a product of a strange situation. JuJuan Johnson got passed over BY the Tigers, he did not pass over the Tigers. Hubbs isn't a Memphis kid. Step outside of Shelby County and the mystique of playing for the Tigers evaporates. Nichols hasn't committed anywhere yet. We'll discuss him when the time comes. Black didn't grow up in Memphis and has never been discussed as a lock by ANY means.
You and the rest of the doomsayers are having a knee-jerk reaction that is so typical of your run-of-the-mill, irrational sports fan. When the short-term situation isn't exactly how you envisioned it (which is nothing short of a picture perfect scenario) you choose to ignore the long-term success. Hell, we have a top 5 class according to some...you're ignoring the CURRENT success. I'm sorry, but it's childish. A child throws a fit when something doesn't go EXACTLY their way. I think its more sarcasm and cage rattling.
He's not that serious about it.
But several posters really were in a mini meltdown mode yesterday.
It was quite amusing.

Success in recruiting should be measured in games won and championship rings, not the names or stars or rankings of recruits. (But then that is too logical to matter to most posters.)

Finch couldn't recruit anyone his last couple of years. Cal hardly recruited any Memphis kids. Pastner has recruited a pile of 5 and 4 star recruits outside the city. Pastner just got commits from King and Markel.
Aside from every word you typed, your post makes a lot of sense.

Markel Crawford and Nick King say 'hi'. The difference between Finch and Pastner is that Finch wasn't really recruiting outside the city. I don't know if anyone noticed or not, but we just got a 4* from Orlando this weekend.
thats all well and good. Larry is my man, so i will have to say if given the choice im going with Larry.
I love Larry too but Josh has proven in his first 3 years that he's a superior recruiter.
Larry just didnt recruit for Larry, he also was the main guy for Dana. Larry got Askew, Turner, Bedford, Holmes, Boyd, later on he got this guy named Penny. im all for Josh, but Josh needs to win this year.
Ancient history. Larry's last 3 classes consisted of...
Josh Steinthal
Sydney Adkins
Chad Allen
Kendrick Bradford
Michael Brittian
Shy Chatman
Damonn Fuller
John Gales
Detric Golden
Cody Hopson
Demon Lyles
Aaron Mulvagh
Omar Sneed
Jermaine Ousley

I agree he's getting better and that's all I really ask for. I'm all for giving the guy plenty of time.
How much more time is that? If we lose all major games and don't advance again, how much more time does he get? Just curious. Things get harder after this year.
ALL major games? We have a grand total of 3 shots at a quality win this year; and 2 of them are the 3rd and 4th games of the season on a neutral court. After that we have Louisville at home. The Louisville game will be our only home game against a ranked opponent in the last 2 years. Counting this season we will have a total of 2 home games against ranked opponents in the last 3 years.
Things will get infinitely easier after this year. We won't have to front load our schedule with neutral site games against ranked opponents. We will actually get to play ranked opponents (more than 1 of them) at home after Christmas.
As usual, reality is the complete opposite of what you post.

We are lucky to have Josh.
Doesn't change my opinion at all. Does your jersey say "memphis" or "pastner"? Think Josh could recruit as well at murray state?
You are making some strange points here.
I think most people would agree its hard for us to get a coach who can recruit at Josh's level.
If it was so easy, Tic Price and Johhny Jones would have made the final 4 here.
There are easily 5-10 coaches who could not only recruit at the same level but who also would have had better success.
1. Drew
Wow; I can't believe there are maybe 10 coaches who could recruit better than Pastner. Aside from Drew, who only a complete IDIOT would want, who are the other 4-9 that would have taken the job?

Jarnell Stokes signing elsewhere was a product of a strange situation. JuJuan Johnson got passed over BY the Tigers, he did not pass over the Tigers. Hubbs isn't a Memphis kid. Step outside of Shelby County and the mystique of playing for the Tigers evaporates. Nichols hasn't committed anywhere yet. We'll discuss him when the time comes. Black didn't grow up in Memphis and has never been discussed as a lock by ANY means.

aka. Pastner's Top 100 crew.
Ferrakohn and Geron were top-100 as well. Stan may have been right there as well.
If someone had told me after Cal left that, going into his 4th season replacing Cal, the new coach would be coming off back-to-back CUSA championships and NCAA Tournament appearances, and have a preseason top-15 team featuring 3 McDonald's AA's and 4 or 5-star players at every position (and coming off the bench).. Maybe it's just me, but I'd have been pretty happy with that future.
This season is pretty important, simply because the expectations are high and the talent and experience are right where they were when Cal started his string of deep runs in the tourney. However, any Tiger fan should feel really good about the present and future of the program. Losing out on Black isn't that huge. The city has been so loaded in the last few years, and I think Josh brought in a pretty strong group of them. He is clearly an elite recruiter, and sofar he has yet to fail in attracting talent. I also think that with time he'll get even better at understanding how to fill out a roster that can win at a Final Four level.
