He does not like having it taken away...sort of interesting since it seems that his son got his scholarship pulled by DD.

I always liked Jeff Compher and IMO he is exercising good judgment.

If you are building for the long term you should honor your commitments and treat them as four year commitments. You should not put a player out with the trash just because you found another player (no matter how talented) who is interested in your program. You might get improve in the sort run, but in the long run you will lose the respect of the HS caoches.

I also realize that the only thing that I have read on this issue is a Northern Star article, so I do not feel that I have heard all of the facts and circumstances.

RE: NS: MBB story - Miller vs MM
first off....there are 13 scholarships....secondly, although a schollie is a year to year committment only, NIU has a procedure to review anyone whose scholarship will not be renewed.....So technically, even if he wanted to, MM could not just take millers schollie without review....that is all compher is saying--that Zach's schollie was NOT taken from him....obviously, with two real and athletic and talented point guards coming in, there was no need to waste a schollie on a short, slow PG who can't consistently hit a jump shot, cannot create for self or others and cannot defend...

My take is MM told him there was no PT for him and the kid and parents ran with "OMG, he took the scholarship"....the concept of "trust" is a funny one: MM trusted that zach could play when he inherited the kid from RP....when the season was over, coach trusted that there was no friggin way the kid could play....if and when MM said positive things about him, that prolly had more to do with trying to motivate the kid to get as much as possible out of him since he was here and NIU had no PGs...Daddy is just mad cuz kid is no longer on scholarship at a D1 school (where he didn't belong in the first place)--regardless of how well this was explained, daddy would still be mad....He should have had a taller kid with more quicks and this wouldn't have happened....Or he could open his eyes and realize, at this level, he wouldn't play that kind of kid..

I hope he stays, too. I enjoyed watching him last year. He is a very hard worker.

From SalukiTalk....

"Daniels Asks For His Release
New Saluki basketball coach Barry Hinson was dealt his first dose of bad news today: according to multiple sources, All-Valley freshman center Dantiel Daniels has asked for his release from the basketball program. Daniels was the crown jewel of Southern’s 2011 recruiting class, the best Saluki class in years. The Wentzville Holt star quickly establishe...."

It works the other way also...such is the world of "big time" college athletics

Take this story just as you would CNN reporting on the Bush administration or Fox News reporting on the Obama administration. You are only going to get one side.

Much as I don't like the idea of dropping scholarship athletes, and would align myself with what seems like Compher's point of view, many coaches have a hard time with guys like this that weren't "their guys" who they aren't terribly interested in having around. And for Miller, from what I can recall of Hillsdale, I have a hard time thinking someone who chooses that school would have been happy long term at NIU.

For Sr. Miller to go off, I get where he's coming from, but come on, be an example for your son about taking life setbacks with grace.
Oh come on now, you know NIU and Hillsdale are basically the same school. 03-lmfao

Miller knew he was a short timer, he was a Patton recruit and knew he would never fit. Transferring to Hillsdale proves that.

Berg update via his twitter...
He went to FL on the 12th to look at a few schools this weekend. He visited BarryU in Miami, Nova SE in Orlando and is visiting Rollins in Orlando today.

He mentioned that he had a "good visit" with BarryU and that it has been a good weekend...though spending a weekend away from DeKalb in FL how can you have a bad time.

I think its likely that he will not be back next year.

Without all (or at least more) of the information from all sides, it is hard for me to get too emotionally charged either way on the issue. This stuff happens in college athletics. Could it have been handled better by MM and by the Miller's? Sure, on both accounts. Unless I hear more, time to move on.

I was in the far west burbs this morning and accidently turned on AM1360 and John Sahly was on from the DC.

He said Miller's dad was contacting every media outlet they could two weeks before the DC even ran the story.

He described Mr. Miller's account as, and I quote, "not credible".

Makes me wonder what his axe to grind is then. That's a lot of effort on his part pressing the issue. What's his real beef?

Um...he is a basketball coach and the past 18 years of teaching his son how to play the game of basketball has now been largely invalidated by the non-renewal of his son’s D-1 scholarship. Deep down he likely feels like a failure and is taking it out the guy that dished out the truth.

Parents enjoy much more of their kid’s achievements if they realize that they are not the best at what they do. It makes the victories all the sweeter.

his real beef is that he has his daddy glasses on and not his coach's glasses....any casual observer of the game knew the kid could not play at this level but daddy was hoping against hope....then he was probably embarrassed that a kid he coached, not to mention spawned, got run off so daddy is wounded and lashing out....Sour grapes, meet scorned daddy--thus NO CREDIBILITY.

RE: NS: MBB story - Miller vs MM
Revenge maybe for the humiliation that his son isn't good enough for NIU? Scorned parent who feels he is in a position to push back in retaliation? Going to do whatever he can to try to get back at MM and NIU for it? Don't know any of that, but it could be. If so, that is awful small of him to do that. Face up to facts whether you like them (or even agree with them) or not and move on with what is best in everyone's interest. I don't know if this much effort on his part is even in their own best interest...... Makes them not look so good either. It might make it harder for any of his future players to get recruited if they are good enough. He can "blackball" NIU at his school but MM can probably also say a few things to other coaches about him as a coach if he were to play that game also.
Best for everyone just to move on.

other h.s. coaches know a crybaby when they hear one--thus the loss of credibility....sure making self look bad and embarrassing self in basketball community--the exact opposite of what he wanted to happen but he was blinded to reality which is why he pursued this vendetta....
