Sometimes I joke that Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti is Michigan's version of the "Twin Cities"...

Actually much of EMU's campus is surrounded by residential areas.

One can start at the edge of campus (say along Washtenaw Ave.) and immediately there is housing which students rent.

(zoom about have way out and one will see EMU's campus, Rynearson, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, and further to the west (left) U.S 23 which essentially divides Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor).

The problem with EMU's stadiums is that students can't walk to them. As someone that lived on Normal Street, I can tell you that if we could have walked we would have gone to a lot more games.

Oh...and the residential area surrounding Eastern is *rough*. Just last week there was a triple shooting less than a block from campus.

1) They have invited, or at least talked to CoC. They said no, I think several times.
2) EVERY CAA fan would rather die than see Liberty or Coastal Carolina join the league. It would only make the league weaker, and Liberty is supposedly flirting with the Sun Belt anyways and may become the 3rd VA FBS school before any other school.

Also to reply to the guy a few posts ago, VCU and GMU will jump at the A10 in a hearbeat, all their fans want it. They view it as a better league for a basketball only school. It will happen after July 1st, once the CAA pays out its NCAA tourney money since 2006. Otherwise they're ineligible for the cash. They're not stupid.

RE: A-10 expansion?
A thread about Atlantic 10 expansion has turned into a thread on CAA expansion. Go MAC!

It is one of the unusual phenomenon. Maybe 'unintended consequences'.

IF Mason and VCU leave the CAA for the A-10, it could trigger MAC expansion.

Certainly Mason and VCU wouldn't be trying to kill the CAA if they leave for the A-10, but it could be an 'unintended consequence' and trigger a realignment within current CAA schools.

It has been a long time since I was a student at EMU.

I never felt not save. I never used to hang where the shooting was but is that area 'rough' or are you 'cherry picking' an incident to make a point?

Overall, I've always felt that EMU has a very safe campus and the areas adjacent to it.

There are a few rough areas in Ypsilanti but, to my knowledge, they aren't close to campus.

As I recall Youngstown State's campus is very safe it is just that you would NEVER want to set foot off of it (or so I was told by some YSU students while there for a conference). Could be like that too.

Not EMU.

I told parents of someone who graduated from Maryland and would be attending EMU as a graduate student that I'd feel much, much comfortable at EMU than Maryland.

We have an incident every so many years but that is to be expected in an campus and surrounding area.

RE: A-10 expansion?
I had actually looked up the FBI's violent crime rate statistics for colleges and universities a while ago but never posted anything about it. A lot of campuses are safer than their surrounding areas, but some are surprising.

Here are the number of violent crimes on various campuses from 2010.

MAC:
Akron - 5
Ball State - 24
BGSU - 3
Buffalo - 9
CMU - 10
EMU - 5
KSU - 2
Miami - 9
NIU - 5
Ohio - 10
Toledo - 16
WMU - Not listed

Schools of interest:
App State - 0
Cincinnati - 49
Delaware - 8
Illinois State - 27
JMU - 3
Marshall - 3
Michigan - 18
Michigan State - 23
Ohio State - 14
YSU - 3

I guess it is okay to offer Delaware, and JMU membership in the MAC.

Any stats on Marshall? 03-melodramatic
