its kinda funny how people are saying that us utep fans are the ones getting riled up when clearly there were 10+ posts of other fan bases stating their opinion even before utep fans started commenting.

Dx has some point to what he is saying in terms of how those remarks arent as intense in terms of the racism like say it was with that espn writer and his comments towards jeremy lin. You have people actually dismissing the severity of the remarks stating that it was only racist because he was puerto rican and not so much because he is of latin descent.

I dunno I think that whatever happened that day, it really didnt really help usm, even though the president apologized. Though I suppose that most of us "minorities" are used to this kind of thinking in some way or another, so its no surprise that there was some moron out there that got that chant started.

To be honest I am sad that this still happens. My mother spend and worked her butt off for more than 10+ years getting her citizenship the right way and I would hate if someone made those kinds of comments towards me for her sake. I am sure that rodriguez's family feel even worse, knowing that they ARE citizens. If you all dismiss this as people blowing it out of proportion then tell that to rodriguez's family who are rightful US citizens and to my mother's face who worked so hard to do what she did and give me and my brother the opportunity to advance ourselves here in the united states. You all don't know how much my mother CRIED on that day that young lady that sang the star spangled banner so beautifully when she was given her citizenship, knowing that she now has all those rights that this country provides. smh.

People are throwing themselves off the deep end on both sides of the pool. Did a bunch of kids chant a tasteless, racist thing to get under a basketball player's skin? Yes they did.

What should their punishment be? I don't know. I'll trust an embarrassed university president to sort it out.

It is the course of a simpleton to paint an entire fanbase with what a handful of knuckleheads did.

Do I think they were out of line? Hell yes. It was tasteless, racist, and uncalled for. I'm I prepared to demonize an entire fanbase over it? Hell no.

Give it whatever credence your sensibilities demand, but let's try to keep it within the proportion of the guilty parties.

Oh man, some of you have bought into this thing hook, line and sinker.

It was stupid and tasteless, but as far racism goes, this is barely a blip on the radar screen. As someone (according to you and a few others) who should take offense to this, I'm telling you this is getting way overblown and a few of you are either trolling or some of the most sensitive individuals ever to walk the earth.

Some of the comments on this thread are much worse than the chant, hypocritical at best.

I can't believe that some people on this forum would attempt to justify this bad behavior buy pointing to other bad behavior.

What these guys did was not only ignorant because the guy is actually from a a U.S. territory, but racist because they assumed that because he was Hispanic, that he must be illegally in this country.

If that wasn't bad enough, these guys were from the band and representing the University. Students are taught ( at least where I come from ) that you never do anything stupid while representing the school that you are from.

I'm not sure what is going on down there in Mississippi but I can guarantee you, UTEP fans aren't going to forget it.

Just ask BYU fans about how we deal with racist comments.
