I think this is a possibility. Make staying in the MAC and A10 as unattractive as possible.

Why would you pick Akron over Toledo?
Toledo DMA is close to 1 million and I don't think Akron has even half of that population. They are rolled up under the Cleveland DMA but still.
I suppose Akron might be more valuable that Toledo if you are looking at basketball as a criteria. It would be a nice break for MAC football if Akron hit the road, the worst performing school for several years running.
Cleveland-Akron 1,524,000
Toledo 426,000
TV Households according to Nielsen

Akron would be a HORRIBLE addition even considering their market.

If they're trying to get Temple, then yes, Xavier moves up the chart fast...

Where is the mystery Ohio school rumor originating? I missed the source of this.

I'd assume all. Toledo would be best all things considered. Good market and good programs overall. Ohio has solid athletics but no market, they actually share the Marshall market.
Yes and Ohio and Marshall already play each other as a non-conference series in football. Its a good rivalry but can exist outside of the same conference.
If you want to give Marshall additional travel help Toledo would be the way to do it.

I'm stuck in the Toledo area so they are my choice for obvious reasons. I'll get to see more Herd games if that scenario plays out.

No thanks. They've shown no dedication whatsoever. There's a sliding scale here between market and success. Sure Akron has a bigger market but they also have practically zero success on the field. Consistently one of the worst performers in the MAC in the major sports. ONE BOWL GAME. ALL. TIME.

Let's say Temple declines the offer
And CUSA picks up UTSA, Akron, and UNT all of a sudden CUSAMWC seems like a lot smaller step up from WAC/MAC/Sunbelt than it is currently.
If The Merger does this correctly they can end the WAC, cripple the MAC, and Sunbelt still won't be much of a factor

for once you're making sense observer1. If we're going to poach the MAC and Sunbelt take the best overall, consistent programs that are at least in a decent market. Don't just grab the best market at the expense of taking a horrible program.

if you wanted to go to 24 and neuter the other NAQs:
MAC: Toledo, Ohio, & NIU
WAC: LT, USU
SBC: MTSU, FIU, UNT/ASU

if that's the case, I'm DEFINITELY leaning Toledo.. Akron is arguably the WORST football team in the NCAA's at this level. So they wouldn't be even a consideration to me...
1. Toledo (all-sports) 2. Miami (OH). (probably my top pick if FB only) 3. Dayton (Basketball only )and then the rest.
Yes, Akron's a better basketball team.. but market wise, Akron is it's own "subdivision" of Cincinnati.. so that cancels out the Cleveland vs. Toledo arguement (as I see it.. don't shoot me, it's just an opinion!)
The Big East did take Memphis so bad decisions do happen.

Go ahead and take Akron. The MAC will respond by adding James Madison and come out a better football conference than before.

I don't see why we need to neuter the MAC or sunbelt. They aren't passing us up and provide teams we can play ooc.

Alright, while im hot... If they do extend the league to 24 taking the best couple from each of the remaining AQ conferences then what needs to happen is the Alliance should get an auto birth for their champion, which would effectively move WAC/MAC/Sunbelt to I-A 1/2. Which I can see the majority of the left over schools being fine with since, they will still be able to make an impact in their "specialty" sports with the Auto NCAA Bids. (ULL baseball, NMSU basketball, etc.)

No the plan is to make the MAC an inferior conference by taking Temple, NIU, Ohio/Toledo
