1) FedEx is a huge sponsor of college athletics. CEO Fred Smith and CFO Alan Graf were in the meetings with BE Commissioner John Marinatto and USF President Dr. Judy Genshaft along with Memphis AD RC Johnson and President Shirley Raines. They have made it extremely clear that FedEx will be funding not only upgrades to Memphis's facilities but also a Big East sponsorship.
2) Memphis owns the Memphis DMA and it's not even close. If you combined all the fans of every other team in college athletics, Memphis would still have a supermajority in the Memphis DMA.
I didn't say FedEx won't kick in some money for Memphis, but that is a far, far cry from saying they will kick in MILLIONS PER YEAR to the Big East. And you have no evidence that they will.
As for a claim that there is more TV or fan interest in Memphis football in the DMA than in SEC football, well, that is simply preposterous.
You have no idea what the hell you're talking about.

What does USF bring? We keep naming facts, and you keep saying they are not facts. List your facts, and don't give us "we've been here 8 years" crap. Go on, enlighten us.
All you can resort too is calling us "noobs" and "second tier" based on your misguided opinion.

Seriously, what is your potential? Where are your quality recruits going to come from?
Louisiana, Texas, Florida, and Alabama. We can now afford to expand our recruiting due to the added income. The new coach and his staff were out in place with that in mind. Their recruiting territory from prior jobs reflects those states. Tennessee produces few 5 star players in football. Tennessee gets them if they want them. However, we have always gotten good players from northern Mississippi away from Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and other $EC schools. Our biggest albatross has always been the $EC neighbors telling kids that we can't play for a national championship. Of course, they have as much chance at that as my 5'4" body does of dunking over Dwight Howard. That now changes and our expanded territories and BE invitation mean that we should be able to get 3 and 4 stars to upgrade our program. Don't forget that it wasn't that long ago DeAngelo Williams and crew were going to bowls and beating USF yearly. We had 40,000 plus every game in our stadium and it will not take long now to se that again. It would be silly to sell Memphis and football short. I would compare it to the Bearcats program and what happened once it joined the BE. Take this for what it is worth, but Fred Smith is a football guy and his being part of the program is good for everyone in this league. Down the road, you will not regret Memphis being in the BE/
I think you are way too optimistic about Memphis's chances to recruit effectively in those or any other SEC states, and i also think that AQ is going away, and that will be a mortal wound for Big East football as a first-tier conference. But those are empirical questions that we'll know the answer to soon enough. Until we do, good luck with that, and good luck to us as a conference.

RE: Mouths to Feed and fan reaction to joining the Big East
Q.
Everybody understands that new guys have to prove themselves just as you did a few years back. How much you have added is debatable but you have a spot and now we have ours.
Value (just a few quick thoughts):
1. You needed a school with all sports and we bring that. No additions needed. No panic upgrades to fit it.
2. You need a top rated basketball program to help fill the void left by the exit of Cuse, Pitt and WV. We help that cause nicely.
3. You need a FB team to get the BEast to 12 for a championship game. Here we are. Certainly a few down years in the last five but don't forget Five bowls since 2003. We also have beaten every SEC team that has played us as well as many other top BCS teams around the country.
4. We bring a bowl with us and it will be upgraded with a larger payout.
5. We bring one of the top advertisers in sports with us. A strong friend to our university.
6. We bring a fast advancing academic standing. Not all BEast teams can claim even minimum standards being met.
7. We bring a top 50 TV market.
8. We bring name recognition.
9. We bring an urban metro setting a primary goal of the BEast. You can actually get here easily.
10. We bring a city fans like to spend time in.
11. We bring one of the most loyal BB fan bases in the country. Over 17,000 yesterday for a game with UAB.
You can pooh any or all the above but it only makes you look petty. It doesn't seem that long ago USF was a sleepy little upstart college and I was offered the registrars job there. It didn't take long to turn it down. Memphis and the U of M have a rare quality that is infectious. The BEast is made up of a bunch of former CUSA teams that have a love/hate relationship with us. We learned a long time ago to value our rivalries and our friendships and I along with my fellow Tiger fans look forward to seeing all of them on the field and court again. I hope one day people like you can remember your upbringing and join in the celebration because you were once us.
Don't worry. We may help sound the death toll for CUSA with our exit but we will pay our own way in the BEast.

(02-08-2012 10:09 AM)quo vadis Wrote: The $64,000 Question about any new program our conference invites is "will they bring in more revenue to the conference than they will receive from it"? Every new school we add is another mouth to feed, they will take several million dollars in TV and other money, thus, it only makes sense to add a team if they bring in more conference revenue than they take out. If they will receive more than they provide, then this is a bad invitation for the conference to make. If they provide more than they receive, it is a good invitation to make.
In other words, it's their marginal contribution that determines the wisdom of the invitation.
Of course, we can never know in advance what that marginal value - positive or negative - will be. That's what we are all debating when we argue for or against inviting certain schools.
However, one possible indicator of likely marginal value is the reaction of fans of a school to a Big East invitation. If we invite a program and their fans flood this forum celebrating wildly, this strongly suggests that they believe their school will be receiving more money than they contribute. This is good for their school, but bad for the conference, and thus the conference made a mistake in inviting them.
Conversely, if we invite a program and they accept and their fans are morose about it, this suggests that the fans believe their school will contribute more than they receive. Good for the conference, but thus bad for the school.
For example, if Notre Dame joined for football and on an equal basis, they would almost surely contribute more revenue to the Big East than they would receive. And thus their fans would not be celebrating Big East membership, they would be pissed off about it, questioning the sanity of their administrators. In contrast, recent invitations and acceptances have been met with jubilation by fans of those new teams, which suggests that the Big East made bad moves in inviting them.
Bad example. Only in your dreams will the Irish play BEast FB. And by your rationale the conference should only invite people who would turn you down and excited fans are bad for the conference? What are you smoking?

RE: Mouths to Feed and fan reaction to joining the Big East
When someone spouts off and doesn't bother to get the facts first, he comes off rather foolish.
One comment on football recruiting, is TEXAS. I have lived in Dallas for 32 years and I can assure you there are a lot of high school players in this area that would love to go to Memphis, if Memphis would recruit them. I mean good players, too.
This year we signed several Texans and considering the new coaching staff's connections to Texas and Oklahoma, expect to see a lot more. It is a 7 hour drive to Memphis from North Texas and closer from Eastern Oklahoma, where the best high school football in the country is played (don't give me that crap that I don't know Florida football, I lived in Clearwater for 13 years and know all about the University of Temple Terrace). A 7 hour drive is nothing to a Texan and Memphis has a lot of appeal from the standpoint of being a fun place to visit...more fun than Waco (Baylor) or Lubbock (Texas Tech) for sure. I talk to high school players here and Memphis is going to continue to do very well recruiting in Texas. Memphis signed the back up QB from Tech and according to my friends who follow Tech football, we got a good one!!

Give us four years of BCS recruiting ...
... still wondering where these better recruits are going to come from for you. At USF, we struggle badly in the face of recruiting by UF, FSU, Miami, Alabama, Auburn, etc. Often lose 4- and 5- star recruits from high schools in the shadows of our campus. We get the 2- and 3- star scraps left over.
Fortunately for us, there are a lot of those, since Florida is such a talent hot-bed. But Memphis is in a far less munificent location, and the competition for talent is even more intense in your area. I don't see it happening dude ...
Until Memphis joins the Big East Conference, it is considered a 'mid-major'.
What you may not have taken the time to look up, is that Memphis, and the state of Tennessee, produce a nice number of football players.
Teams from a bigger league (the SEC) are able to come in and recruit our city, using our mid-major status against us.
When Memphis joins the BCS cartel, that will no longer be the case. A better league will be more enticing to a recruit deciding on Memphis as opposed to them deciding on whether or not they want to play in CUSA.
I don't recall USF being a national power before they joined the Big East. A few fews after, that program took off pretty well.
With increased resources coming in from BE affiliation, and a new aggressive young coaching staff in place, there is no reason that Memphis cannot similarly improve in football like South Florida did.

The SEC teams in our backyard (Ole Miss & Mississippi State)? Absolutely.
Hard to imagine a top recruit saying to themelves "if Memphis was still in CUSA, i'd go to Ole Miss or Arkansas, but now that they are in the BiG EAST i am going to Memphis!". I guess we will see, but ....
MEMPHIS is actually a more widely recognized brand than Ole Miss due to their Final Four runs. They have a cred with younger athletes that is not all that unlike UNC.
Nevertheless, other schools with lesser profiles have been emphasizing the SEC affiliation, and Memphis's lack of being able to gain access to the biggest stage in college football... The MNC.
Being able to take that out of their bag of tricks is huge! It allows for the image they created around Tiger basketball to transcend into football.
You seriously think Memphis football has even 1/5 the brand recognition of Ole Miss football? Have Big East homers gone insane?
Use your head for a moment. If a kid goes to Ole Miss, they get to play against LSU, Alabama, Arkansas, and Florida. You go to Memphis and play UCF, Rutgers, Houston, and Cincy?
Is that even a remotely close comparison?
If a kid goes to Ole Miss to play against LSU,Alabama, Arkansas, or Florida, chances are VERY good that that Ole Miss team will LOSE all four games. That is a equally negative argument for a kid choosing Ole Miss over Memphis in the future.

Don't sneeze at Elite 8, Elite 8, National Championship game, Sweet 16, and NCAA 2nd round in the last 5 years.
Also, it should be pointed out that the entire Memphis athletic department has grade point average over 3.2.

Is your school still operating it's athletic program out of a trailer? Also the last time I checked Memphis has a winning record against the calves in both football and basketball.
