So I'm taking this civics class
And look at the first thing I come across

"The marvel of all history is the patience with which men and women submit to burdens unnecessarily laid upon them by their governments."
-George Washington

Good enough for me.

RE: So I'm taking this civics class
When Washington used the word "liberal" it had the connotation of what we would call libertarian today. Rebel and I are classical liberals, and I think Rebel will forgive my using the "L" word to describe him. Ron Paul is probably the quintessential classical liberal today, just as Jefferson was the quintessential liberal of his day.

I'd be very happy with Thomas Jefferson's ideas being dominant. I don't think most of today's "liberals" would.

RE: So I'm taking this civics class
I'm stunned to hear that they even have civics classes these days. One of my kids had a civics class in high school back in the early 90's and they didn't even have a text book or any book for that matter. They just talked about current events. Of course their discussions were completely without context and necessary historical background.

I think that's what Peanut was recommending to me.

I'm not really taking a class, it was just a response to one of Peanut's many absurd comments.

Your ignorance of the Constitution is, as usual, on full display. The founding fathers were exempt from the "natural born citizenship" clause.

It also points to the conclusion that the class or group of "natural born citizen" is different than that of just "citizen".

I wonder what Washington thought of states' rights when he couldn't even get funding for the army to fight the British.

Worse, we've now turned "long form birth certificate" into being something other than what every state I know of other than Hawaii (maybe Alaska as well as they weren't states until fairly recently as well) calls a REGULAR BIRTH CERTIFICATE. There are MANY people born in Hawaii who were born there before it was a state. Not many from any other state... and NONE from 90% of them.

The "Certificate" is the unique document... not the so-called "long" form.

Never heard the term "regular". I only have one BC along with 99% of the legal population of the US.

He did mean what he said. You just don't understand what he meant.

Take a look at Washington's other quotes and beliefs. You will find they bare no resemblance to what we know liberalism to be today.

1) The Democratic Party is in no way liberal.
2) Just because you demonize liberalism, it is a perfectly valid political philosophy
3) What you seem to believe about liberals is just a caricature developed by Limbaugh, Luntz, Drudge and a chorus of angry white men
