New Article from CBS Sports.... Army/Navy & Terry Holland Interview
Army/Navy Talk and Terry Holland Interview

Interesting.
-They list our market as Raleigh/Durham (#25)
-We are expanding our stadium to 60,000 in 2016

"East Carolina, whose TV market (ranked No. 25) is surprisingly close to UCF's No. 19 Orlando TV market, has led C-USA in attendance the past three seasons and had the second-highest non-AQ home attendance average last season (49,665).

East Carolina athletic director Terry Holland would not specifically address the Pirates' interest in the Big East, but did address with CBSSports.com whether ECU could compete in any conference. Houston AD Mack Rhoades and UCF AD Keith Tribble declined comment for this story.

"I believe that East Carolina's ability to compete with most of the institutions in the conferences with automatic qualification has been proven on the field, in the stands and by the marketplace," Holland said.

Since 2005, the Pirates have seven wins against AQ BCS conferences; the second most of the Big East candidates behind Navy's 14-17 record vs. AQ BCS teams.

Holland also referenced the 2009 Liberty Bowl between East Carolina and Arkansas, which drew a 10.3 rating (2.4 million households) on ESPN in the combined markets of Greenville, Raleigh/Durham and Charlotte, N.C., compared to the 2008 Holiday Bowl between TCU and Boise State, which drew a 5.1 rating (2.4 million households) in Dallas/Fort Worth.

Holland added the Pirates' attendance numbers -- they would have ranked fourth last year in the Big East in attendance (49,665) -- will increase when ECU's stadium expands to 60,000 in 2016"

Tons of good stuff in this article.......

some great quotes by Neal Pilson....who now works as a TV consultant......

and something a lot of us have said on here repeatedly:

"Each one offers its share of positives and negatives for the league and the consensus among league personnel is that there isn't a clear-cut favorite or pecking order among the three C-USA schools."

I think ECU "looks and feels" like a BCS AQ school. I would be fine with them joining the Big East, given that I think a good football program (i.e., not just potential) should be a prerequisite for consideration. If they expand the stadium as reported, it will be as large as West Virginia's.

Interesting article.

No mention of BYU. Does he know something?

Would navy bite? Would they take Army without navy?

How far away is ECUs campus to Raleigh/Durham btw. First I heard them count that market as it's "home".

I'll go out on a limb and say that BYU is a long shot/ not really in play.
I think the "surprises" would be Army and/or Navy joining.

Well I am not sure why the author of that article went with the Raleigh/Durham market but like someone else said, if you get on Hwy 264 west and drive about 10 minutes outside of Greenville you are in the Raleigh/Durham market.

The actual Raleigh/Durham TV market begins 10-15 minutes west of Greenville. Yes....Raleigh proper to Greenville proper = around 84 miles.

Navy and ECU for football only, BYU or Houston as all-sports.

10/18 with 2 federated football only members to get to 12.

Cheers,
Neil

ECU is in the Raleigh-Durham market about as much as Baylor is in the Dallas-Ft. Worth market. Both have fan bases but the TV market isn't the same.

First of all it was not TH who was using that Raleigh/Durham market number it was the author of the article so you will have to take that comment up with him. Secondly like we posted before the
Raleigh/Durahm TV market line runs only about 10 to 15 miles to the west of Greenville. The two markets really overlap in Greenville. All of the the Raleigh network stations broadcast Greenville. It is kinda of weird, you get 2 CBS,ABC,ect affiliates broadcasting in Greenville. The ones in the Washington/Greenville/New Bern market and the Raleigh affiliates. That is why all of the Raleigh affiliates cover ECU sports, because a sizable portion of their market is actually closer Greenville than it is Raleigh.

IMO....have to give ECU full membership. Its a lot to ask a athletic department to take the rest of the spots to the Atlantic Sun or whatever on a permant basis

Of course...I'm biased on that issue :)

i found the viewership from the bowl game interesting. 2.4 million of nc's 9 million watched the game. pretty solid draw statewide compared to what most non ecu supporters say.

Don't necessarily disagree, but CAA or A10 wouldn't be too bad. The most important thing is to get them in for football anyway we can, imho. Worry about all-sports down the road after the split.

I'm just excited that they are even mentioning the Pirates again. Hope it isn't false hope and they really are given serious consideration.

Cheers,
Neil

Terry Holland is quietly getting it done in Greenville. I would love to see The Big East invite ECU. Too many positives not to.

Actually, most ECU fans that I know wouldn't mind playing our other sports in the CAA (Colonial) if we were invited football-only to the Big East. Of course, full membership is what we would all hope for and work towards, but we would be able to bus to most, if not all, conference opponents in the CAA, drastically cutting our travel costs from CUSA.

Just for the heck of it, here is the market maps. The green shade is the Raleigh-Durham-Fayetteville market. Greenville is located in Pitt County.

Army & Navy is still the same futile attempt to keep hybrid together.
They have been telling BE no for 8 [if not longer] yrs now. save the stamps.

I been on the BYU for FB only now for 5 yrs, bringing them in a splitt BE,
with TCU & BYU. Could there be 6 programs out there to fill out west div.
with thier FB program now being eastern based, I would think they would want BB program
out west to keep a presence out there
