I wouldn't mind seeing us pick up a JUCO offensive tackle for 2012. Tyler Loos and Ryan Brown seem to be the heirs apparent at tackle and while they're supposed to be good players they only weigh 260 pounds at this point.

RE: 2012 Recruiting Thread
Doeren has definitely taken a different approach overall to recruiting than Kill as shown by the number of schollys we have already offered to this point. Hopefully it pays off next February when he can really recruit a full class after having a year at the helm.

We have at least moved toward the middle of the MAC pack in # of offers with 29. We still trail Toledo 83, W. Mich. 62, BG 48, but we are getting closer to the norm. Next year the class should be rather large, so I would not mind even more early offers.

i really can't draw any valid conclusion as to the importance of the number of offers we have extended.

All I know is that we (and everybody else) can only sign 25.

Pretty sure you can sign 100 if you have 100 scholarships available. A few schools signed 30+ last year.

That would be incorrect. You are only allowed 25 for any year. Those that signed more were signing early enrollees that count for the previous year's class. Womble, as in example, enrolled in January therefore he counts in the 2010 Recruiting class, not the 2011 class.

Interesting. What is that point of that rule?

Many schools in the south were and still are oversigning players. This led to some players being cut and worse some kids showing up on campus, then being told their was not a schollie for them. If you have time, check out the website, oversigning.com.

25 per year; 85 total. With all kinds of dodges, especially in the SEC.

Do we even have a chance with half of these guys?

I am a newbie as far as this recruiting thing goes. I know one of the new coaches said at the HASF kickoff that they were going to get a lot better results with recruiting next year. But I just don't see how we are going to get more than one 4 star or more than a handful of 3 star recruit if we are lucky without an IPF built by 2013. Then again the star system seems messed up anyways.

the coaches will go after players they they can excel at NIU. whether they have 3 or 4 stars is of no concern to our coaches. Please lose the star hangup.

I am fine with not worrying about the start but I more so look at how many offers from BCS schools the guy has. Is typical of our past recruiting or something new with Coach Doeren and what he wants to do.

This stuff is semi-foreign to me, too.

The element that complicates things for me is that it seemed like the previous staff liked to keep what they were doing recruiting-wise more quiet. I feel like I kind of missed the evolution of early offers over the last few years. It seems like something that's grown a lot, but maybe not? It also looks like, with some programs tossing so many offers around, that the act of offering doesn't really mean much more than "we're interested." And I wonder if it isn't sort of a toll you have to pay just to stay on some players' radars.

Obviously, I defer to those who follow recruiting more closely on this stuff.
