Wow, didn't see this one coming. Maybe the Big East brass is smarter than we think...

Villanova vote delayed

i read on an other site that Pitt, WV and RU were all saying no. What went on is anybody's guess. So here is mine. The footballs never expected Nova to actually get its act together enough to take moving up seriously. Nova must have the plan and financing in place to at least make the step up. The Nova board actually has the yes votes. Now everybody is realizing what a mess this move would make. BE footballs had to find a way to throw cold water on the Nova fire and something was said or threatened at this meeting to make everybody step back and re-assess.

This is all very simple. Rather than merely talking about possibly expanding PPL Park, go ahead and actually do it (and it needs to be more than the paltry 30K seater many are projecting) and then come and see us. Until then we need to cast our gaze in the direction of more deserving candidates like East Carolina and Central Florida.

Completely agree and since a few on this board think Baylor and Texas Tech will be left behind once UT bolts to the Pac, the Big East should act quick and fast.

Grab Kansas, K-State, Mizzou, Tx Tech, Baylor, ECU & UCF.
2010 attendance numbers.

Split the divisions
North South
#26 Mizzou 61,540 #32 Texas Tech 57,108
#32 West Virg 56,326 #42 Louisville 50,648
#39 Pitt 52,165 #44 ECU 49,665
#43 K-State 49,816 #56 TCU 42,466
#48 Rutgers 47,013 #58 USF 40,849
#55 Kansas 44,851 #61 Baylor 40,043
#60 Syracuse 40,064 #63 UCF 39,614
#66 UConn 38,248 #69 Cincinnati 35,067.

Adding Kansas, K-State & Mizzou grabs a good portion of the St. Louis and Kansas City TV markets, TCU, Tx Tech & Baylor grab a good portion of the DFW TV market plus some TV sets in Houston, and bolsters the Florida market.

You don't have to wait on upgrades in facilities or fans with these additions. Stadiums in place and fans that will follow their team in large numbers.

WOW - they never had a formal invitation? They had a conditional invitation?

Yes, as should be the case. They would need to document how they would meet the criteria established by the league to play football in the conference.

The real question is what did they fail to do? One article says that as of March 31, Nova had not yet reached a deal with PPL. Is this the crux of the issue?

Or is there a higher attendance criteria than the NCAA minimum of 15K that PPL does not meet now and there were no indications that PPL agreed to expand to meet that minimum? Or something else entirely?

As always, the devil is in the details.

Cheers,
Neil

This sucks. I thought we'd have closure on this on Tuesday. Now we have to wait until as late as June 30th. 03-tired

RE: Uh oh...Villanova's vote delayed
I predict that come 2012, the Big East will have 10 football teams (none of which are named Villanova).

The question is whether they have 17 or 18 basketball teams.

Should the Big East add a football-only school for the 10th spot, my guess is Navy would be the first choice and East Carolina and Temple would be considered.

Should the Big East add an all-sports school for the 10th spot, then Houston or UCF would seem to be the frontrunners.

We'll know before June 30, the deadline to leave C-USA after the 2011-12 school year without paying a huge penalty.

After 2nd thought, there is no way the hoops schools allow the football schools to allow further expansion. The only way possible is a split. So from here on forward expect a 9/17 hybrid.

Nova can't expand PPL Park without getting approval from the MLS team that actually owns the place. I doubt they can even get approval to get it to 30k. Only reason that was even discussed was because the stadium was designed to be able to expand to 30k, which means past that is pretty unexpected.

PPL Park is a joke. If it stayed at 18,500, not only would it be the smallest venue in the BCS it would also be the 2nd smallest venue in all of the FBS. Only WAC bottom-feeder Idaho has a smaller stadium.

While expansion is always fluid and nothing written in stone, unless Nova admins "masterminded" this whole thing to save face *wink, wink* and this was understood behind the scenes by all parties, I'd be shocked if the bb schools voted favorably for any further expansion.

Of course, I'm fine with 9/17. I never understood what the rush was anyway.

Cheers,
Neil

I hear you. It does seem like Nova is shocked by this info. But being that I'm buzzed I may be wrong lol. I do get the impression from the Nova side that they was blindsided. It just may be hard to get passed 9/17 unless there is a split. And to be honest 9/17 is really a win-win for me anyways. It will be interesting to what the fallout is sooner rather than later. I'd be surprised if this is some wink-wink situation. Why carry this on for months if this was some WWF storyline?

Up late this evening/morning because of severe weather in the DFW area. Tornado warnings have been issued all night across the Metroplex.

That being said, no one likes my new Big East line up? That line up would pass the ACC and get more $$$ than the ACC.

Like I mentioned earlier, the schools I mentioned do not have stadium issues or fan issues. Name me another candidate that can bring what I propose besides Notre Dame and BYU?

No one responded because what you posted is mental masturbation that has no chance of happening. The Big 12 North/lesser Big 12 South schools are not going to leave that conference voluntarily to join the Big East.

Texas is now fat and happy. They make the most TV money of any school in the nation. They aren't going to blow the Big 12 up.

OU isn't going to leave Texas, and can't leave Oklahoma St politically. A&M talks about going to the SEC, but Rick Perry is dead set against it. Politically, they can't get it done. Culturally, they'd be lost without their hated rival.

The Big 12 North schools are the schools who proposed the uneven distribution of TV money last summer to appease Texas when it was flirting with the Pac 10.

So you really expect the Kansas schools, after getting what they wanted (keeping the Big 12 together), to shell out $10M each in exit fees to join a worse football conference who distributes less money to its members than the Big 12 does?

Get real.

The Big East might get to cherry pick the Big 12 leftovers one day if and when the Big 12 blows up, but the Big East will never be able to raid the Big 12 while Texas is still a member.

Woohoo! Staying at 9. I agree with you about the basketball schools. I can't imagine them signing off on a 2nd dead weight basketball program just to appease football. And I can't imagine the football schools threatening the nuclear option to add a cusa school.
