90% of the game is half mental
I'm more convinced than ever that the problems we seem to encounter every year against Akron are mental. Despite what Hawk says about these kids don't know what happened before..yada yada yada.

Hawk is well aware that he has been totally unsuccessful against Akron, losing 9 of 10. Maybe he wonders if they will EVER beat them and is passing that vibe to the team without realizing it.

Dambrot knows how to beat a Hawk coached team. Doesn't matter how good or bad his team is that year. I've taken to calling him Dark Helmet, as he is Hawk's kryptonite.

I want a fancy way to say "no," to this, but I can't think of one. So: No.

Akron looked like they had the fresh legs. They were flying to the ball.

Just asked Hawkins this question. His answer: That's why they're fans.

What question did you ask him? If he thought he would EVER beat Akron?

Look, Hawk is always full of excuses. NOBODY would answer a Q. like that honestly, even if that thought had regularly crossed his mind.

What are you, OZoner, a kid? Only a kid would ask him that because most of us know how he would answer.

I will say this, though. For an Ohio fan you did do a pretty good job this season trying to rank MAC teams in a league that was even more topsy-turvy than normal.

My question was roughly: Some of your fans are starting to feel like there's some sort of mental block when you guys play Akron. Is there any semblance of that?

And he didn't make an excuse, really, in that answer. He went on to say that Akron has beaten him a lot because they're a good team, mostly. It was a short post for the sake of time. I just thought it was an opportunity to ask a question. No real point I was making there.

I'm really trying to get rid of that qualifier. My interest is doing my job the best I can.

Fair enough.

What qualifier are you trying to get rid of? "Ohio fan?" I'll grant you this - you do your homework. Good job this year and it is nice to have the coverage.

You have to realize that we are having a rough night. Our team played lights out for 5 weeks and then stunk it up so bad in the first 10 minutes that the game was out of reach.

We came into this year with few expectations. Once this group got their heads screwed on straight, they started to play some good ball. That got our hopes and our expectations up. Tonight was like watching Lucy yank the ball away at the last moment. In a sick kind of way, it seems to be a WMU tradition.

We're just tired of hearing about how great the east is all the time and tonight's result will just be more ammunition for those who nearly always leave WMU out of the discussion because they feel west teams are just inferior. If we seem snippy tonight, that's why.

Yes, the Ohio fan. It's my alma mater (and I've tried to get my username changed to no avail), but I think I do a good job of not letting that get in the way.

I hope I gave your team the respect it deserved this year.

I've had regrets about one of the statements I wrote last night, post-game. Poorly phrased, did not convey what I really meant and came out sounding/reading much more harshly than intended.

Quote:Look, Hawk is always full of excuses.

What was meant was not how it came out. Sometimes, his explanations for what went wrong almost come out sounding like excuses. I don't believe that Hawk makes excuses. For that, I apologize.

Fans like this knucklehead are prone to making mistakes or not communicating well. I expect the best from our athletes. Perhaps should do the same for myself.
