Is that statement sort of like distributing a leaflet with symbols that someone thinks look like crosshairs?
No because I think we would actually like to see that happen to them.

I suggest that in Arizona, all Members of Congress attend this furneral and do the same. So that Congress really understands what inflamatory hate speech is....

Thing is, for a country perceived as "cowboy" and "violent" around the world, the WBC protestors come and go at these funerals, and nary one of them have been physically assaulted yet (unless it's happened and I didn't know). All I've heard are that cars go by shouting insults and throwing trash at them.

Imagine you're at a funeral of a loved one, your own child's no less, and hear these pieces of human wreckage taunt away as you enter the parlor. I'd think the chances of you - and other family members in such an emotionally unhinged state - snapping and charging at them are ridiculously high.

Sooner or later...Some father that feels he has nothing left to live for after losing a son in this nonsensical war is going to empty a magazine into heads of these funeral protesters.05-stirthepot

Sort of OT: A blogger has done a bit of "research" into the Westboro clan and their "church" and says that "Westboro Not Baptist or Fundamentalist."

Quote:In its entry for Fred Phelps, Sr., Wikipedia also notes:
Perhaps it is because the Westboro clan actually seek to discredit Baptists and evangelical Christian by taking every stereotypical accusation to an absurdity.

There is a huge leap in logic from saying they're not a mainstream or rational Baptist/Fundamentalist church to saying they're hippies in sheeps clothing trying to discredit Baptists/Fundamentalists.

Quote:Phelps has run in various Kansas Democratic Party primaries five times, but has never won. These included races for governor in 1990, 1994, and 1998, receiving about 15% of the vote in 1998.[35] In the 1992 Democratic Party primary for U.S. Senate, Phelps received 31% of the vote Phelps ran for mayor of Topeka in 1993 and 1997.

Take from this whatever you wish. This is info I had never seen or heard before. Kind of sheds a new light on this supposed "conservative" church, at least according to media.

The likely explanation for that is that they thought it would be easier win a primary as a Democrat because the Republican party is probably a lot larger in Kansas.

How quickly we are willing to throw away the 1st Amendment because someone wants to abuse it.

Don't we have laws on the books about inciting riots? Disturbing the peace?

Disturbing the peace is nothing more than a open-ended catch all to allow people to be arrested just because they happen to be inconvenient and/or annoying to some officer at a given time.

I'd hardly say this is inciting a riot .. you can start by prosecuting the BART cop who executed a guy for inciting a riot .... and I think people in Oakland would agree that THAT is a real riot.

I came pretty damn close... I said, As an "anti-American f@g" I don't mind them.... just have people dishing it BACK at them. Real Christians. Throw some Mormon missionaries, maybe a catholic priest... I dunno, have them try to reason with them, using the Bible.... it's a great idea!

Oh....I fully support these fwads in protesting. I also fully support the marketplace ostracizing them for their actions. I can't control the level of that ostracism.04-cheers

The First Amendment does not say you can do those things anytime, anywhere.

So you and GTS have misconstrued the whole thing.

I fail to see how their stupidity matches the litmus test for abuse of the 1st amendment: yelling fire in a crowded theater.

Their protests will cause no physical harm to anyone. They are not initiating force.

You're right, GTS.

The unpleasant side affect of the 1st amendment is any ******* with an opinion. Cost of doing business.

The worst thing you could do to Phelps and his merry crew is to ignore them.

Because you are ignoring the most fundamental principle: your rights end at the other guys nose.

These guys may have the right to freedom of speech, but a corollary so obvious that people don't even see it is, that I have the right not to hear it!

So, if they insist on protesting in public (and you'll note that such a right is NOT articulated in the First Amendment) find a reasonable place and time for these people to demonstrate to their hearts content. A park across town, or on the streets at a different time of day... these people can most readily assemble and speak freely.
