Spent a little time last night looking around in the 07 threads (not going to resurrect any of them). Thought I'd give a little rundown, maybe there's something we can learn.
1) PJ was 7's guy, even then. Also, MD's sanity has been in doubt for a long time.
2) The apparent finalists:
*Jerry Kill- Didn't seem to be the first choice of a lot of people.
*Dan McCarney- The popular board pick. Now HC at North Texas
*Chuck Martin- Generally seen positively. Some hesitancy about the D2 to FCS jump. Bigger fears that he'd go Brian Kelly on us. (Right concern, wrong coach it turns out)
3) Other names legitimately linked to the job:
*Scott Shafer- seemed to have a lot of ex-player support, as he should. Got passed up by the quality of the pool, being Jim Harbaugh's DC didn't mean what it does now. Really should have stayed at Stanford.
*Mike Locksley- a lot of positive feeling about him. Currently soiling himself like a toddler in pullups at New Mexico
*Joker Phillips- Was OC at Kentucky, now their HC. I remember liking him fine, it must have been an up year by UK standards
*Craig Bohl- HC at North Dakota State.
*Mike Haywood- then ND OC. Now Miami HC
4) Any ex-NIU assistant whose career hadn't gone haywire seemed to come up.
5) Doug Plank-
The process then took 2.5 weeks. If we match that timeline we'll be warming ourselves to happy thoughts of a new lead Huskie for Christmas. Have to think alumni/donor facetime requirements at the Bowl will slow Compher down just a little though.
Funny in hindsight: there were a couple comments along the lines of looking for a Patton-type hire.
