(11-23-2010 09:39 PM)Murph29 Wrote:  Sad state of affairs that we lose good posters in the course of calling fellow fans out over poor attendance. Pathetic really and totally unnecessary. Here's the bottom line: attendance will increase after some consistent winning and people deciding its a good way to spend their time and money. The posters on this board aren't going to fill the Shoe whether one or all are attending games. And I can't really blame fans who don't go to nonconf games against the likes of Craphole Valley State in the wake of 5 really trying years. And student support has sucked for many years and long before Huggs left. It is what it is and its sucked for years.

Calling out posters here aint gonna fill the Shoe. So why go that route. If you build it they will come. Cats keep winning crowds will go up as the season progresses, mark it down. They make the tourney this year and come next year you won't see openers with high school gym like attendance. It'll grow over time just like football has had to do. UC killed its own cash cow and people who want to blame the fans for not showing up to every game after five years in the abyss are misdirecting unnecessary anger.

This team plays hard and they look a lot better in the effort and execution department than other teams have in recent years. If they keep it up, the crowds will grow. Until then, I truly hope posters stop fighting with eachother and support the team how they see fit.

You pretty much summed it up Murph. On another thread a poster said to hell with people who didn't attend the last basketball game. I don't get that.

Topic "A" ----

Regardless of overall attendance figures, I will be at the game tonight since:

1) I am in town
2) I ain't working tonight
3) I am not baby sitting tonight -- Mrs. QSECOFR is doing the baby sitting so my son-in-law and I can go to the game together.

Topic "B" ----

I have never had an issue with any of the mods here. Being a "mod" is a thankless, non-paying gig that allows one to be critiziced for stuff that others do. Sincere thanks to all who work to make this a place to read & post.

Topic "C" ----

I have never had an issue with any of the posters here. Not all are my favorite people, but all here -- except for Bucky Whatshisname -- are Bearcat fans and that alone puts me in good company here.

From time to time, I do get together with some of the posters here. REALLY good people if you ask me. As old as I am, I am usually the youngest one. We sit around, talk about the Bearcats, and compare all of the meds we are taking. REAL exciting stuff -- but I enjoy every minute of it.

Topic "D" ----

Happy Thanksgiving to all. Hope everyone has a chance to spend time with those who are important to you and eat LOTS of food.

RE: Shrinking attendance
Am I missing something? When did Bearcat banter turn into middle school clique wars? 03-banghead

One thing about message boards is much of the time any sense of nuance in posts kind of gets ignored. For instance there are times when I read some of Rath and Eastsides post and yea if I read them a certain way I could see how they could come off as an attack on some other posters and how they view UC athletics, but I read them and really don't get that impression at all. Certainly there are strong opinions on many aspects of UC (um..i should hope so if you are posting on a message board), but I don't think for the most part the intent is to come at people...

We do get some baiting posts here and there... the Jim Boeheim thread was a ludicrous attempt at baiting people into argument... I remember subflea making a post with similar baiting last week and I know we have gotten it from other posters too (of all different viewpoints on UC athletics).

I have been a Mick Cronin skeptic since the collapse in his third season. I gave him another shot last year and my skepticism grew to doubt that he could do the job (so much so that I called for him to be let go and even wrote a letter to Mike Thomas saying as much). That view puts me at odds with many here, but I have never viewed that expressing that view has made me an outcast with the board. I try to express that view clearly and I don't try to derail threads with it. (and since he is back I am going to spend there year hoping that Mick and Mike prove me wrong).

My general point is...lighten up people. You do not come to Bearcat Banter unless you are a fan and care about the program. We all may have different interpretations on what that should mean, but I have respect for each and every poster that comes to Banter and represents their views. You don't have to get into pissing matches in order to express those views and you don't have to take each and every post like it is a personal attack against you.

Personally i appreciate what B, Coop, Murph and even Chatter (most the time) bring to the board.

I also really appreciate what Rath, Eastside, MLB, and Sub bring as well.

I don't understand how it has gotten to the point where people take it so personally.

MODS you do a great job here and I appreciate your efforts. If there is ever any complaints about me feel free to send them my way so I can take note.

In the meantime folks...LIGHTEN UP. Enjoy being a Bearcat fan. Make your points and don't take things so freaking personally. O... Stick around. don't leave... share your thoughts many here appreciate them...hell I think most do.

We are all here because we love the Bearcats, don't lose sight of that.

anyways there's my two cents...

This pretty much sums up my feelings.

The whole argument "If you don't do X then you aren't a real fan" or it makes one better than someone else is the biggest crock of sh!t I have heard in a long time. Grow up.

Mark- I like most of what you post but I got news for you. I'm not in any clique. I'm just someone who has posted here for many years and usually gets along with everyone. In fact my posts on this thread have been specifically directed at the point that we're all passionate UC fans or we wouldn't be on here year after year after year and nobody should be grouping people into factions as seems to be the case. My other point was that poor attendance is the result of 5 frustrating years and its only going to steadily improve with consistent winning.

And please don't ever put me in the same sentence as Chatter. Its downright insulting.

RE: Shrinking attendance
So... since I'm labled in as part of the "clique" (which I think is a ridiculous statement to begin with), I figured I'd point this out to everyone.

1. I financed RenewHuggins.com - also helped in the tshirts that BCN and RenewHuggins.com sold and donated all proceeds to Huggins' favorite charity.

2. I thought Cronin should have been fired after last season.

If that somehow puts me 100% in line with the "clique," then so be it. That being said, I think it goes to show that people who are short sighted or feel slighted against will come up with any explanation as to why things happen, no matter how false they are. Nobody has ever been censored here, some have been warned for doing nothing but trying to start pissing matches with the rest of the board (Chatter, Don, both of whom have come back multiple times only to get in trouble again).

We have now lost a number of our best posters to this board, multiple on both sides. At some point people will realize that we've lost a lot of perspective thanks to the childhood pissing matches on both sides of the argument. If O had a big problem with Rath or Eastside, he should have approached them. Instead he acted like a baby and now they have decided to take a leave of absence from the board as well. Basically in 1 feel swoop we lost 2 of the best basketball minds we had here, in O and EJ over someone not being able to handle a discussion. I suspect that all will be back in some way, shape, or form over the next few months, but in the mean time we are all losers.

You can love Mick, hate Mick, or be indifferent about Mick. At the end of the day, all of us are UC fans. The point that Rath and EJ made was that the players deserve better than 3500 fans in the stands... that a school with 40,000 active students and over 250,000 alumni should do better than 3500 fans. If UC is going to bring in a big name coach and hold on to them, the fans need to take ownership of the program. It is that simple. Somehow, some way, UC needs to get people in the seats no matter if they are winning or losing.

Murph, I was not trying to put you with anyone...merely trying to mention different posters that have stated a variety of opinions and thoughts. It was not meant to lump you more to say I appreciate your perspective.

In a way you made my point, nuance is often lost in a message board. Though I did not write it to lump you in with them that is how you read it. Sorry if you took it that way. The point is people need to relax.

RE: Shrinking attendance
Winning cures all ills which means this board and fanbase will be healthy soon. Look at Cats schedule. If we get past Dayton we could easily start season 13-0. Oklahoma is terrible this year. Xaviers probably going to have a down year. We play DePaul twice and Beast schedule will be brutal but I think not as tough as in peak conference years. Also the only "quality" opponent we play twice is Gtown who weve had success against for last couple years.

I think our gaudy opening record before conference play will attract more seats at 5/3 as will end of football season. Then we start off Beast play with Depaul, seton hall and Crosstown Shootout at home. You can bet that a Xavier win will help fill seats even more.

I think rath said you get what you deserve. he was talking to the people who want better play, but I assume it works both ways. maybe you guys should just buy all the tickets and give them to local students. then you'll have your packed house.

Quote:that a school with 40,000 active students and over 250,000 alumni should do better than 3500 fans.

How is bitc#ing about it gonna help? we all know the answer to the problem. it's been posted many times. I bet you are afraid to say what the solution is. Say it!

Quote:If UC is going to bring in a big name coach and hold on to them, the fans need to take ownership of the program. It is that simple.
take ownership.01-wingedeagle

if fans take ownership and want a change in coach, then it's all about the board and the money. Not so much about ownership as you want silent, obedient contributors.

Quote:Somehow, some way, UC needs to get people in the seats no matter if they are winning or losing.

WOW, I'm at a loss for words. You don't keep going back to a restaurant if the food and service suck. Do you go back to see a bad movie a second or third time? that mentality is insane and it's partly the reason they are where they are now. If you don't have a good product, you better have damn good marketing.

this is the most amazing thread I've seen in my life.

lets win and make everyone happy

How long is the leave of absence for Eastside, Rath and O...NV gone as well? I'm with Delhi on this...Banter is a good group of guys overall from what I have seen on here over the years, the more the merrier.

After all these questions / debates of UC "fanhood" aside, [Image: th_facepalming.gif], I hope the board is back at full strength soon.

Huggs isn't happy with his attendance either. He always get his shot in too!

Quote:West Virginia men's basketball coach Bob Huggins made a note not to short-change the 6,443 fans in attendance at Tuesday night's game at the WVU Coliseum against Robert Morris.

"I've got great respect for the game and the way it's supposed to be played. The 6,334 that showed up deserve a little better," Huggins said. "I think that's what it was. Sorry, the 6,443. I hate to short them."

That was the lowest attendance since Nov. 27, 2008, against Maryland-Eastern Shore when the Coliseum had 5,630 fans.

When a university's Board of Trustees do the unthinkable and take it upon themselves to fire the head coach, who is still the #1 choice of the majority of fans..........it's hard for those same fans to believe that taking ownership will do any good.

For the record, I thought Huggs should have been fired for his transgressions. I just thought it was completely handled wrong, timing-wise, at the time.

And I hate admitting that part of me wishes he were still here.

UC is 8-0. I'm fully behind Cronin and the team. Hopefully they continue to perform.
