Thanks for the link. It looks like the 12/20 is really being considered. So we would be adding:

TCU
Houston
Central Florida
Villanove or Temple

Memphis and East Carolina or not mentioned! What's you take? 04-cheers

No one outside the doors of those meetings knows much more than any random poster on these message boards.....but despite the fact that the NY Post (!?) is the source making this report, it looks as if things may truly be heating up.....will be interesting to see how things shake out....

ECU doesn't have tv market and thus can't deliver revenues to the league and there may be academic concerns as well
Memphis is awful in football and their facilities and academics don't help them. Their market is much smaller than the other candidates.

TCU, Houston, UCF and VU or Temple bring the 4th, 5th, 10th and 19th DMA into into the leagues football contracts and potential network. That's a lot of potential for increased revenues. Houston having been part of a major football/basketball conference, being in a huge market and having lots of financial and state backing probably helps outweigh academic issues they might have. Also it makes sense if you bring TCU to also add another nearby program and Houston has been the best.

It will be interesting to see how many teams will actually be brought in and how the league will handle them --all sports or football only or?

RE: Big East looks to expand
Even though I love to loathe ECU, they are a much better candidate than Villanova/Temple. ECU, despite their small market, draws well and they televise well. If given a BCS opportunity, they'd instantly eclipse Wake and Duke (for football anyway) in NC and be on par with NC State. Plus their football is, you know, good...unlike Temple and Villanova (in terms of having to move up for them). Philly isn't a college town for football and Temple/Nova aren't going to change that. Better to take what ECU gets you in Raleigh and the Tidewater (which is at least something since MASN picks up their games).

Lenn Robbins is very good with this stuff to be honest. So what I'm taking away from this is the football schools finally having all their ducks in a row saying we want to expand by at least 2 schools possibly 4. If you don't agree to going to 10 or 12 football playing members and thus 17 to 20 overall all-sports members we're out of here for good. I'm all for making the hybrid work if instead of being the noose it is now it becomes a unique way to do business that makes us stronger.

From what little I know about Houston, this looks like the best hope for long term stability. The only negative would be if the Longhorn Conference imploded the next day and we could have had Kansas, KSU, Missouri and ISU instead. And even then, that may not be better in the long run.

If the Texas Ten/Longhorn Conference/Big 12/Big XII-2 imploded the day after it would mean the dawn of the superconference and it would be time for a split and time to add those 4 schools probably as the Big 16. I think a conference with
Big 16 East - UConn, Syracuse, Rutgers, Temple, Pitt, WVU, USF, UCF
Big 16 West - UL, Cincy, Mizzou, Iowa State, Kansas, K-State, TCU, Houston
would be a very, very good one.

Nice find Buck. Short and sweet and to the point. Great article. WOW.

At least we know that the BE fb schools are serious about expanding, even possibly splitting from the bb schools if necessary.

At the end of the day this is the Big East, the worst run major athletic conference in America. That being said, part of me still figures they won't agree to expand and the Catholic schools will convince the Secular schools to stick around anyway.

My take is that only Nova and TCU are known for sure. The mentioning of the others is simply guesswork. However, they do make for some nice logical quads -

SU,UConn,RU,Nova
WVU,Pitt,UL,UC
USF,UCF,TCU,Houston

Wonder who the 20th bb member will be - St. Louis?

Cheers,
Neil

I wouldnt say that. The article mentioned the other schools as lead candidates. Didnt say they were the only candidates. I would rather not see Houston in the BE just yet until they have more sustained success.

Do you think, we could maybe get Notre Dame?

Interesting question - because considering the condition of their program currently, it MAY become apparent to folks in South Bend pretty quickly that they aren't as "golden" as they have been in the past - and conference affiliation just might be what they need...???

Heard a pretty good discussion on Notre Dame's "relevance" the other night on ESPN......pretty eye-opening for folks who continue to think ND is the program it was 15+ years ago......

Memphis football is "awful" right now, but there is nothing which cannot (or will not) be fixed. Besides, 5 bowls in the last 7 1/2 years is better than many schools can say. Memphis academics are no worse than the other state school candidates. Facilities are better than you think (light years ahead of Villanova, at least) and are being steadily improved in accordance with Tranghese's recommendations. Memphis brings a top 50 TV market which it delivers, the tradition-rich Liberty Bowl, strong corporate support for the Big East network, nationally-recognized rivalries with Louisville and Cincinatti, is a logical extension of the Big East footprint and a great basketball program. Big East officials would be foolish to overlook all that UofM offers.

The Big East has said there are a dozen or so candidates so there are other schools. The article mentions these as the lead candidates-probably by now some have been dismissed. We also don't know how many teams might be invited--if its 9 or ten then VU and TCU are probably it. More then Houston gets a strong look for market and also gives TCU another Texas game and partner.
