TSA requirements
Quote:TSA requirements
Effective Nov. 1, all passengers must have Secure Flight Passenger Data (SFPD) in their reservation at least 72 hours prior to departure. You will be unable to travel without providing this information.

In compliance with this mandate, you will be required to provide Secure Flight Passenger Data (full name, date of birth, gender and redress number, if applicable).

For new reservations and re-bookings made within 72 hours of flight departure, the Secure Flight Program requires that this data is submitted at the time of ticketing / ticket reissue. Failure to comply may result in the cancellation of bookings and/or denied boarding for the customer concerned.

Disturbing, to say the least.

Shouldn't be a problem if you have nothing to hide, right???

My inner cynic says the airlines themselves lobbied for this, because it allows them to hike rates further out, and avoid selling tickets at radically slashed prices near the time of departure.

So, if I need to fly to a funeral in 2 days, I'm SOL?

My mother was in a horrific car accident and I have to wait 3 days to fly home and see her?

They haven't done that in years really... at least not on international flights. Christmas air to vacation spots is already over $1000. They have much more flexibility to cancel flights, overbook and jam people onto full planes than before... no need to cut prices.

I'm sorry about your mother.

No... but you have to give full name and birthdate.

You have to give this to them anyway to get your boarding pass. I don't see why this is a big problem for people.

It was hypothetical. My mom's fine. Other than being upset at me for my lack of reading comprehension.

Even if she wasn't fine, I wouldn't tell you strangers about it.

Well the TSA has made it just so, if you are here illegally, you will still be able to board a plane, using what ever forged or acquired documents you happen to have purchased. NICE!!!

We aren't strangers at all. I know that your name is Raider_ATO, and that you are a Raider fan that was a member of ATO. See, now we are close acquaintances, so what is going on with your mother?

Thanks, old guy who has kids and spends way too much time on here. Or pirate fan-guy who has kids and spends way too much time on here. Maybe both.

Huh??
The whole purpose of this is so that IN ADDITION to scanning your passport at the terminal (where they are likely to catch forgeries) they have a few days to check your name against the don't fly list... particularly if your name is common... adding the birthday. Obviously, we aren't too worried about 7yr old Usama Bin Ladeen or 95yr old Ursula Benaldi... unless they show up and are a 6' tall 55yr old man.

Actually, this just did happen to me but it wasn't my mother. Why can't they just give all Americans a non-forgeable ID card and use it as a SS card, driver's license, or whatever?

F@@K the TSA and those that created it. It is simply another wasteful governmental workfare program that causes more damn problems than it solves. The Airlines are perfectly capable of providing security for their aircraft. The TSA is security theater with the Stooges as the stars of the show.03-puke

Because that would be a national ID card. Likely with RFID chips that are easily traceable (and easily copied). The govt. could know where you are at all times.

If it can be created, it can be recreated. Nothing is "non-forge-able". All of someone's information in one place is a hacker's dream. All they need to do is break into one system.

Scan your passport. No, they did not say that. It says "full name, date of birth, gender. A foreign birth certificate would have that info. A foreign drivers license also. Forgeries would be easy. How about a fingerprint or a photo id. No, not needed. Check me on this.... Isn't it true that a foreign person visiting the US for less than 30 days, needs no visa, green card or any other documents? Try that in Mexico.
