I didn't write the article. Take your gripe to the Daily Mail.

I'm beginning to wonder whether you don't actually read the articles, or if you just post them and assume the rest of us will think they're talking about American schools.

the principles are the same. Torch criticizes government involvement in schools, no matter what the country. Why does it matter what country this is from?

Without an answer, I'm thinking your "principles are the same" comment only helps to prove my point.

i didn't see your comment till now. when i say the principles are the same, i'm referring to schools over-diagnosing various disorders because they'd rather not deal with kids who aren't clones. This happens all over America and obviously Britain too. Thus, my comment is valid.

Diagnosing kids that aren't clones? Are kids developing reading difficulties to stick it to the man?
But seriously, the author claims a motive is to receive extra funding. I know my schools don't receive extra funding for kids in special education. Quite the opposite. Extra expenses are often necessary to run special programs, but the funding doesn't come from any type of bonus money. Schools are funded per kid, not per need.
She also says it's a way to not address the problem. In the US, every kid takes the standardized tests. There's no getting around it. If a kid with a disability doesn't do well, it counts against the district as if they didn't have special needs. There's no reason to put a kid in special classes to get around anything.
The author also says the teacher told her that her kid has dyslexia. Maybe we're missing some of the story, or qualifying a kid for special education services in England is a world apart from the US. Either way, a kid doesn't receive services in my district because a teacher recommends it. It's a little more complicated than that.
That's where I don't see how this article translates.

It's not like that everywhere in the US. So, stop trying to be the representative of the entire country, since you don't know what goes on throughout the country.

She said more than that. Much more. How can you possibly teach if you don't understand the material first? Seriously, reading comprehension is not underrated.

The feds pony up somewhere between 12% and 18% of the cost for special education. What is the benefit of qualifying more students for programs that cost more than general education when you have to cover the rest? Remember these students are all accounted for in testing under NCLB, so it's not to get them out of the accounting.

RE: 45 min/day
Is anyone else surprised by the parent's statement that she only needed to spend 45 min. with her child to cover the curriculum? To someone with homeschooling experience: Is it really that small of a time-drain on the parents to cover the material?

I've grown tired of the dr.'s schtick. He posts some random article with somebody's, usually anectdotal, story that rips public education. Then he'll move on to arguing semantics when challenged. If that makes me an azzhole, so be it.

to be fair, it's rather easy to bash public education. the system is so bogged down with bureaucracy that it's no wonder kids can barely read or spell anymore. But IMO it's so much more than that. the destruction of the nuclear family has led to many kids being raised by single parents. Less parental guidance, coupled with falling standards and liberal "everybody's a winner attitudes," have combined to really hurt our educational system. Honestly, i blame the teachers least of everyone.
It's tougher to teach these days with the way kids are. My friend (who's a white South African) just started working for Teach for America, teaching remedial math and honors math in a middle school. He was placed in one of those jungle schools in DC, where it's less than 1% white. He tells me it's exactly as you'd expect it to be. I actually texted him this afternoon to see how it was going and he told me he was cussed out for the first time today and last week he was called a monkey a** ni**er. How can we blame teachers for stuff like that, when it's obviously the parents fault? I told i couldn't wait to hear stories from parent-teacher conference night. He said it was coming up this wednesday and that he was worried nobody would show up. talk about a sad concern

And I can appreciate that. There's definitely room for improvement in education. Not all teachers are where they need to be either.
That said, torch likes to pile the blame on the shoulders of teachers without taking any account of administrative or school board decisions, much less other outside influences (ie. family, socio-economics, yadda, yadda, yadda).

well maybe he's encountered more horrible teachers than most, leaving him with a bad taste. It's possible.
While i do think teachers deserve only a small percentage of the blame, there is something i have a problem with. teachers are always preaching diversity, yet don't seem to care about having diverse ideas. It was very rare that i had a teaching who wasn't incredibly liberal. I just wish teachers were a little less liberal, but i guess everyone has some level of bias

Yadda yadda yadda.
Could you deflect any more?
Once again you changed the topic of this thread so you could avoid the point. You do more to prove things than I ever could.
