I know some of you apologists can explain this for me. If Little Rock is such a terrible place, why is Coach Foley able to recruit good ball players?? It's not uncommon at all to meet someone who has recently moved here from another part of the country They all have good things to say about Little Rock, saying it's a good place to live. The frustrating thing about this season is not necessarily the losses but, in my 25 years or so as a regular fan, IMO, this is the least talented squad we have ever had. I don't believe it's expecting too much that every year we should have at least 1 or 2 really pure BB players. Maybe we should have another round of replacing all the assistant coaches. That should solve the problem.

I agree that Little Rock is a great place to live. But MJS has a point. If all it takes to recruit better is campus life, then our main goal should be to get the on campus student population up to 2000 as soon as possible. That doesn't seem like that big a problem. Aren't we building another dorm, or has that already been done? And if so, how many students will it house? I know there are some apartments on the edge of campus. Are they occupied yet? Good things are happening.

As far as talent on the squad, I was one who said this would be our most talented team in awhile, and I'm not sure that's still not accurate. Granted, some are playing their first year here, and I see signs of players improving like Kelson. Had Mike stayed healthy our inside game would be more formidable, but he didn't so we can't help that. Alex is proving to be the player we thought he would be. Lionel does some good things at point guard, but remember, he's only a sophomore. Courtney is doing some good things. Ricky Davison has shown moments of brilliance. Putting the pieces together and leaving it together seems to be the coaching staff's problem this year. Let's hope things start to improve. We can't afford to lose this next game.01-lauramac2

Show how much you know about basketball talent Doc. I'm glad you aren't recruiting for us. Oh well, it wouldn't make any difference, evidently the coaches thought this group was good too.

Just kidding Doc. I don't know how good they are, although we do have better shooters than we've had in a while. But, I'll bet you one thing, they won't be good enough to win the Sun Belt.

I'm keeping what money I have in my pocket.04-cheers

Dollar Bill. Glad to have you back on the board. Haven't noticed a post by you in awhile. Personally, I love Little Rock and I don't think it's terrible place at all. When a recruit comes to visit you have a day or two to convince him to come to your school. I'm just saying when you have a vibrant campus it makes your job a little easier. Foley has done a great job- but he hasn't made the NCAA tournament yet either. Maybe this will be his year. I can't say if this is our least talented squad or not- we are certainly not as talented as the majority of teams we have played. We'll see how we do against the rest of the Belt teams.

I did a report about commuter schools while in school. The schools have dorms but have a higher percentage of non-traditional students. Here are a few I can think of that have some name recognition.

DePaul
Georgia State
George Mason
UAB
Hofstra
Cincinnati
Houston
South Florida
Central Florida
Miami

There are several there that have had some success in athletics, and basketball in particular.

I don't know how you define a commuter campus. I certainly don't think Miami fits the bill. I toured it when my son was looking at schools. It's an absolutely beautiful campus and an expensive private school. I think they have more students there from the Northeast, than Florida, so I really doubt its a commuter school. My sister went to South Florida 30 years ago and lived on campus. They had tons of dorms- whether they have a lot of commuters as well, I couldn't tell you. My niece presently goes to UCF and loves it. It is the 4th or 5th largest University in the country. Again it may have a lot of commuters, but it has thousands of students who live on campus.

The only other school I'm really familiar with is Georgia State. When I lived in Atlanta, 35 years ago, it was a commuter school very much like UALR. I don't know that it has changed. Regardless, their sports achievements are no greater than UALR despite being in the South's biggest city.

The difference is that they have Georgia Tech, The Falcons, the Braves. A lot of competition for the dollar. We have nothing right here in Little Rock. Just UALR. We should become "Little Rock's team". That should be the emphasis of our promotions, IMO.04-cheers

If our administration had ANY SENSE AT ALL, that WOULD have been the theme of the team's (non-existent) promotional program long ago.

when I win that jackpot I will personally bankroll the name change to University of Little Rock. The "At Arkansas" can take a hike. That should help...a bit.

What we have in central AR is a bunch of traditionalist idiots who are not aware that the Hog Program they WORSHIP is in the NW corner of the state LOOKS DOWN UPON and thinks itself superior to Little Rock. I cannot get too excited about a program that disdains me and my town. Period. I hope they win every game except any that affect UALR, the school whose diploma hangs on my wall.

I just spoke to someone tonight whose daughter goes to Depaul. Said it used to be a commuter school put now has "a ton of dorms". He certainly didn't view it as a commuter school at this point in time.

Talking with a gentleman connected to UALR couple weeks ago. He said there will be a tremendous spurt of growth at UALR the next 2 to 4 years. I believe he was talking about construction. I didn't have the chance to get details. Regarding the comparison of UALR to other Urban type schools. I believe it's safe to say none of such schools have faced the up-hill fight UALR has had to fight just to exist and grow at snails pace. I can't believe the red neck attitude and determination to keep UALR down happens elsewhere. Seems to me UALR has received practically no moral support from LR politicians or so-called civic leaders. UALR most likely would have done better if it was located across the river.

Obviously those people don't understand geography.04-cheers

UALR certainly has had to endure an uphill fight in many areas. I really think it's starting to turn the corner. I think (or, at least, hope) that a lot of Little Rock area businesses are starting to see that sending all their money up to Fayetteville, instead of investing in their local university has been a mistake. NW Arkansas is on of the fastest growing areas in the country, while Little Rock has been rather stagnant. Not sure if the "determination" to keep a school down, happens elsewhere or not. Turning back to sports- Is there another flagship State University that doesn't play any other schools in its State? I can't think of any. Someone enlighten me if I'm wrong.

Maybe MJS, PTJR, Pappy or whomever can tell us the schools around the country that most compare to us. I think of names like Cleveland State, Portland State, etc. They sound like they might be the same type of school we are, but I don't know. Comparing us to Western, Denver, ASU and others is probably not a great comparison. I'm not talking about comparing our basketball teams, but our universities in terms of student makeup. Anyone who has anything to say on this, jump in. I just thought the aforementioned posters might be informed on this subject. I don't have a clue.04-cheers

The ghost of John Barnhill looms over Hogville. I know of no other state that would allow this policy to continue. It's totally stupid. It costs the state a lot of money. If Arkansas played the other instate schools, all that money would stay in state instead of going to Monroe, Louisiana or other such places. Unfortunately someone in the legislature will have to have the guts to make it happen. I don't like government intervention, but sometimes it is inevitable when people are totally unreasonable.01-lauramac2

That my friend, is the reason Arkansas is usually ranked near the bottom of the states in most all categories. We're usually near the bottom in education, but in the categories that count, *UA football, jailbirds, and teenage pregnancies, we're right up near the top.[/b]

As far changing things like this, it can stay like this forever if it takes government intervention. I want government to stay out of my life as much as possible, and I really don't like them getting involved in my sports.

* I didn't intend to tie UA football and jailbirds together in that statement, although they do go hand in hand many times.

I think this has been done in another state or two. But it's possible the threat of legislation would cause changes to be made without any actual government action. I agree it's best when people can make decisions that are beneficial without government intervention, but when people in charge are so entrenched and hard headed, it just takes the law to make changes. Sad, but it seems that's the way the world works.
It's like regimes like Iran. All the nice talk in the world isn't going to change their minds about anything, and you know eventually either we, or other countries are going to have to kick their butts.03-banghead

I don't know a damn thing about why Newell is still at Monticello, that doesn't have anything to do with what he did here, he set a standard that hasn't been approached at UALR since, and may never be. And don't give me story about the TAAC as opposed to the Belt. I'm not just talking about winning, I'm talking about the whole thing, fan interest, exciting basketball, and pride. We don't have any of the three now.

There are several theories as to why Mike left a lot of folks with a bad taste in their mouths. But the one undeniable fact is, that like LRTrojan writes, he won games, he created fan interest and he created pride in the program. Most of that is gone now, but there's no reason why it can't be rejuvanated. As to why he's still at UAM, I think his time passed. He missed his opportunity when he turned down the Marquette job. That could have put him in the big time, but the Lamar job was the wrong choice for a lot of reasons. But that still doesn't diminish what he accomplished for our program. He needs to be in our Hall of Fame. No doubt. I hope we don't wait until he's dead to do it.01-lauramac2

Ynocpirt had this discussion the other day. I don't for a minute diminish the things Mike did here. He put us on the map and created unbelievable excitement. On the other hand the fact that he is at UAM argues strongly against those that believe he is a "great" coach. If he was a great coach some DI school would have hired him. Even if a coach is a *******, as long as he can coach (Bob Huggins?) someone will hire him. Personally, I liked Mike and he always treated my wife and I well. He was clearly the right coach, at the right time for UALR. However, the fact that he is languishing about as far from the big time as you can get is pretty telling.

I know absolutely nothing about Mike Newell's coaching ambitions but, it's possible that UAM or something similar is where he wants to be.
