"Nobody cares"
Shields quote in today's paper that "Nobody cares. I don't care and I don't expect our fans to care," about the possibility that the team could struggle in these three road games.

I damn sure care, and I suspect there are some others who care. I thought that was a pretty stupid thing for a coach to say. That wii really fire up his team, and the fans. I know that there are going to be some here that will try and put the "spin" on this, and make something positive out of it.

Come to think about it, maybe he's right, "nobody cares."

I think maybe that was a very poor choice of words, and in retrospect, I'll bet he wishes he could take that back, or rephase it. The fact that we have a lot of new players and are playing a tough early schedule, I'm sure most of us expected it would be tough, but to say "nobody cares" is not politically correct. A better way to have said it was something like "We really have a tough road early for this basically new team, but we're going to play like Hell and try to win them all. Our fans deserve our best effort". I'm sure that's what was intended. O.K. The positive spin has now been put on it.04-cheers

Don't you subscribe to the Demozette? It was in the front page article on the Trojan-Tulsa game this morning. I don't have any way to post it. Some on the board can do it.04-cheers

If the coach doesn't care, why should we?

It's not politically incorrect, it was just plain stupid, and it's something that any Trojan fan should resent their coach saying. I can't believe he said it.

I'm like you. I can't believe he said it either. What would possess him to make that statement? I wonder if Chris cares? Ouch.03-melodramatic

RE: "Nobody cares"
All public figures express things wrongly at times. No big deal. I think what Steve meant to say was that no one was going to be surprised and go into a panic if the team struggled early against this schedule. "Care" was the wrong word.

Did Jeff write that? I need a link for afull quote in context.

I know I damn sure care. I care for those kids, their parents, our town, our coaches... It is a big deal to me. I may care the most about this due to all you guys that are here posting. This team brings a since of community in a set of people with very dissimilar back grounds.

God bless you all for caring about of group of kids that aren't ours.

Trojan fans care. We won't be too surprised or dissapointed in the outcome, but we do care that our guys come away from it smarter and healthy. The only people who don't care are not Trojan fans. They would not care if we won or lost the division or the conference. They would care if the Trojans began doing better than their team and then they will try to wish they could shut us down like they attempted in the 80's.

Enough people care about UALR basketball that the program is alive and in the best shape ever. And we stand to convince a few more to care if things continue to develop.

Poor choice of words, IMO.

Did I read Coach Shields correctly? Unethical and totally uncalled for by any coach, regardless of sport or level. Undoubtedly, Coach Shields gets my vote for "Foot-In-Mouth" of the Year.

Let's see. How can we irritate the fans this season. First let's close practices, lose our exhibition game to a D2 school, then lose our first two regular season games, and say "we don't care". Whoa Nellie. Not a good beginning.03-nutkick
