Big East loses Sun Bowl to ACC
Terrible news, our new lineup looks grim:

Last week, i predicted we wouldn't be able to tab the Sun at #3, wish i had been wrong. :(

Well not for nothing but El Paso is not a place I care to visit, perhaps we can be in the mix for the Liberty now instead. I'd much prefer traveling to Memphis and eating good BBQ and listening to Blues.

It would be nice to get the Liberty, but as it stands right now, our lineup has taken a hit, particularly in the "prestige" sense. The Gator and Sun are far better known than the Champs Sports, we lose chances to play Pac-10 or Big-12 teams.

And let's face it, THIS was real disrespect. Our #3 gets ousted in favor of the ACC #5? That's a tough one to take.

Probably. That's one bowl that apparently likes the Big East...

Meineke will be #3, by default, as it has been. Unless we can somehow pull a rabbit out of the hat with another bowl.

RE: Big East loses Sun Bowl to ACC
Disappointing, but not terribly surprising.

This quote pretty much sums it up:

"we have a bigger menu to chose from with the ACC"

Which is undeniably true. 12 teams vs. 8 + a slim shot at ND.

Could it be any more obvious that football expansion would help not only with scheduling, but also with our bowl deals?

Even if we find an adequate replacement for the Sun Bowl, the fact that we lost it to the ACC #5 in the first place is an embarrassment to the league.

Yep, losing out the ACC #5 is embarrassing.

It's bad, but not quite as bad as the numbers first show. With 8 Big East teams, the middle team is #4. With 12 ACC teams middle team is #6. That doesn't quite work because Norte Dame was part of the package too, but I think that fact gets forgotten in the bowl discussions a lot.

Yes, the fact that the Sun valued our #3 less than ACC #5 is a slap in the kisser.

I am not sure if losing the Sun Bowl is that much of a loss. As long as the Big East can find a game another solid replacement. I am not visting El Paso to see a bowl game anytime time soon. Why can't the Big East try find a a bowl to place the Big East's #3 versus the MWC #1 or 2# or the C-USA Champion, or WAC Champion. 10 plus win teams from those conferences would be more compelling than playing a five loss BCS conference team.

Good thinking, not to mention that El Paso is about 3 times farther to travel from the average Big East school. The tradition-rich Liberty Bowl (going on 51 years) is there for the taking on one condition.

As for a replacement - if the Liberty is feasible, it would be a perfect fit. But my own personal preference is for the BE to really take hold of the opportunities presented by the Yankee's new stadium in NYC and create an exciting new bowl in the Big Apple.

What about the Music City? Offer Big East #3 instead of ACC #6

Hopefully this setback is just what is needed to jolt the BE presidents out of their slumber, and get them to start thinking seriously about expansion ASAP.

Memphis is cold in December/January. Can not imagine weather for a bowl in NYC.

THAT would be a solid addition to the lineup, and a perfect location.

The Big East in the Sun Bowl always seemed a little odd to me as an outsider, so I'm not shocked that you guys are no longer partners. I am a little shocked that the ACC slid in there, though. That's just weird.

Then again, all things could be cyclical...four years down the road, there will be even more changes, so who knows. I agree that the Liberty rumors will start flooding pretty soon...as will some others.
