RE: FIU drops band, cheerleading
Ya hafta suspect once the story receives widespread publicity, money will be found.

We aint talkin a ton in the big picture.

All the while the state of Fla may have been subsidizing university programs, think about this.

Huskie band & cheerleaders receive no scholarship money and NIU gets zip from state.

There may be some money comng in along those lines, but I'm not in the band anymore, so I wouldn't know. Either tubaguy or bucfan could answer that question for you.

Politicians in Illinois are a flippin' joke. If you vote for any incumbent ---anytime soon ---you are a retard.

RE: FIU drops band, cheerleading
How can FIU justify building a 50M stadium and paying Isiah Thomas to coach their hoops program but can't find $45K for cheerleading squad and $ for a marching band? While they can have HS cheeleaders and bands play at their games you can bet those HS students won't be thinking of FIU as a college option after they graduate HS.

Reminds me of the early 70s when I was a student at NIU. My sophomore year we had no band because we could not afford uniforms. The next year some businesses in DeKalb stepped up and raised money for uniforms.

Football games were not as fun without a band. We did have a pep band at the BBall games

RE: FIU drops band, cheerleading
The money that was donated for band scholarships has not yet been distributed--something to do with the Foundation's rules and the fact that the fund has lost value in this economy.

The lady who made the donation passed away in April and unfortunately did not live to see her generosity put to good use.

NIU's marching band was discontinued after the '71-'72 year because the school of music did not believe the band fulfilled the school's academic mission. There was a belief then that NIU would become the next great music conservatory. When that did not happen, and after two years of negative feedback from the community, the band was resurrected for the 1974 football season (Marching Huskie Show Band) as a unit within athletics rather than music. (Note: In 1996 the band returned to the music department.) Funding was a side issue in the "disbanding" but more an excuse than a reason.

I live not far from the new stadium. Great place, but they probably got in over their head given the financial climate. Waiting for NIU to come here and play, but I rather see us play Miami. The Miami players don't have coaches, they have probation officers.

Way funny ...and plan on waiting a lifetime before Canes visit FIU.

Your comment regarding UM thugs brings back amusing and fond memories. I never will forget when NIU played at U Miami and local reporters were actually allowed in lockeroom for postgame interviews with the Huskies.

They reported being astonished that NIU players spoke in full sentences and in a dialect easily understood.

RE: FIU drops band, cheerleading
I really wish the band and cheerleaders were allowed to do some heavy fundraising. I always buy whatever they are selling. They desperately need the money because University funding is not there. I spoke with some cheerleaders last year and was told that they need to earn their own money for everything from uniforms to competition trips. Athletics won't even give them a page on its website. Buy the 50/50 raffles, cheerleader calendars, and whatever the band may be selling. These fine groups that add so much to our game-day experience need all of our support.

When did NIU play Miami? I'm waiting for that day again. My daughters and I wear NIU tee shirts all the time. It gives the locals a break from the Miami/FSU/Gators shirts/hats that everybody else has, especially the little wanna be thugs who can't spell "college".

Got some comments about the NIU shirts back in 2003 after we beat Alabama, but kind of off the radar since then.

NIU played (and lost to) Miami in either 1985 or 1986 during the Vinny Testaverde years.

Jimmy Johnson was the coach I believe. He was friends with our coach and did not run up the score.

You beat me to it! I think it was their wives who were friends. I was looking up who was coaching Miami then. Our coach was Jerry Pettibone. The game was in 1986--34-0. We lost to the other Miami three weeks later.

The world-famed Vermeer Quartet was based at NIU until it disbanded.

RE: FIU drops band, cheerleading
I wouldn't be choked up if there were no more band or cheerleaders. Regional public universities can't afford to have EVERYTHING in place. If the band or cheerleader units could be self-funded somehow, then fine. But the wisdom of using NIU financial resources or student fees in support of these two endeavors is silly in the economic environment we live in for public universities.

I like the band by the way. This opinion has nothing to do with the quality of band.
