Dems have enough votes to do away with Electoral College
https://www.motherjones.com/politics/202...e-compact/

Tuesday’s wave election swept Democrats into power in Congress. But the most seismic result for American politics and democracy may come out of the battleground states where Democrats just won trifecta control by taking both state houses and the governor’s mansion: Come January, Democratic legislators will have the votes to elect the next president by the popular vote.

State lawmakers could circumvent the Electoral College by enacting what’s known as the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.

It shouldn't. I mean the only way for it to stick is a Constitutional amendment, from what I understand.

The Electoral College still exists under the Interstate Compact. It’s just that certain states would (maybe) allocate their electoral votes in defiance of the popular vote within that state. I’ve heard some people say that such a law would be unconstitutional. I doubt that.

Yeah, I know absolutely zero about this specific subject, but it would be surprising, no shocking, if that were actually true. But for now are we really going to take an article written by Pema Levy and Ari Berman as gospel truth?

Remarkable, isn’t it? “Swing states” would disappear. National campaigns would be aimed at individuals rather than states. Your vote in red Oklahoma or blue New Hampshire would count as much as a vote in purple Pennsylvania, whether you’re a minority “dot” or not.

No one was thinking about Texas as a possible signatory to this at all. Then—pow.

No. It would be just like it is in European Countries. The Big cities get EVERYTHING and the people that live away from big cities get nothing unless they move to the big cities. Campaigning would only take place in the big cities. There are places in Europe that have not changed for 100 years. They don't have running water or electricity.

Levy and Berman sounds like a law firm among other things. No, we shouldn't trust them.

They are speaking to the idiots of the country. That includes people with PhDs. The first thing the Democrats will go after are guns and the 2nd Amendment, because that is the ONLY thing that keeps them from their agenda. We've been here before.

It does. If the Compact goes into effect we can expect challenges, but governors and lawmakers in a number of states have already looked into this (many lawyers exist in those ranks!) and they like the odds.

I can see this playing out as the Compact taking effect first. Then, after a few election cycles with popular vote campaigning, no one wants to go back. A constitutional amendment becomes easy to pass, and that seals the deal.

I’m 100% positive if the Electoral College is abolished so will the UNITED States be as well. It will be a return to completely ignoring and minimizing small states with less population.

The Republic of Texas has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?

Be careful what you wish for…..you might just get it and then buyer’s remorse sets in and guess what it’s always non returnable.

This is what a quick search brings. If true, it's never going to happen, IMO.

Quote:AI Overview

Changing the U.S. Constitution requires a two-step process of proposal and ratification as outlined in Article V.

Step 1: Proposal (Getting the amendment started)

An amendment can be proposed through one of two methods:

• By Congress: A two-thirds supermajority vote in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. (This is the method used for all 27 existing amendments).
• By a Constitutional Convention: Two-thirds of the state legislatures (34 out of 50 states) ask Congress to call a national convention to propose amendments. (This method has never been used).

Step 2: Ratification (Approve the change)

Once proposed, the amendment must be approved by the states using one of two methods chosen by Congress:

• State Legislatures: Three-fourths of the state legislatures (38 out of 50 states) vote to approve it.
• State Conventions: Ratifying conventions held in three-fourths of the states (38 out of 50 states) vote to approve it (this method was used only once, for the 21st Amendment).

Key Rules

• No President Needed: A proposed amendment from Congress does not go to the president and does not require a presidential signature.
• Senate Equal Suffrage: No state can be deprived of its equal suffrage (two votes) in the Senate without its consent.
• Archivist Certification: The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) manages the official tracking and proclamation once the 38th state ratifies.

You can read the exact rules directly at the National Constitution Center or study past changes via Congress.gov.

The whole purpose of the electoral college is to prevent the highest populated states from being the only ones with a say in our national government. You need 38 states to agree to this. I don't see it.

Thank you for going on record as being anti-democracy.

Most Americans believe in democracy and support it.

Sure, everybody knows the Constitution, by design, is not easy to amend.

History shows us that under some circumstances amendments do get approval pretty quickly, though.

The main thing to note here: The Interstate Compact works independently of this process. It does not require a constitutional amendment.

States would still send electors to DC—but, as always, states decide how to allot their electors. Under the Compact they agree to peg their electors’ votes to the national popular vote any time that differs from their state popular vote. They can do it that way if they want.

If triggered the Compact does not officially dissolve the Electoral College, but it does in fact make the EC superfluous.

Once you make a process superfluous, and once everybody is used to it that way, it’s not hard to send it into history. Support is already there. State legislatures can all take care of amendment ratification one day before lunch, and it’s not even page 1 news.
