Actual Christians are some of the more generous and giving people on earth.

Typically when democrats talk about helping the poor they are talking about huge, wasteful government programs that are rife with corruption and often don't help those in need much at all.

Jesus taught about individuals helping those in need, not building government programs through socialist ideals.

Jesus said that was OUR responsibility, not governments'. I figure that's what you're beating around the bush about here. The early Christian church was taught to take care of each other, help each other financially, help widows, help the poor, help unbelievers in various ways, etc. That's a fact. My church has free mental health counseling, elder care ministry, divorce care, grief care, etc. You don't have to be a church member or even a believer to get help on any of those things and you'll never be asked for money. Our tithe and other gifts pay for it all. That's what we're supposed to be doing.

I have this conversation with my socialist/atheist relatives all the time. They don’t go to church so they don’t know the amount of charity that churches and its congregants do. At times even I think we do way too much. My former employer, a faith based health health system, literally does hundreds of millions in charity each year, not to mention the individual donations that staff gives on their own.
