Liberty Bowl games and the SHC are once a year events. A lot different than a 6 or 7 game schedule.

They are once-a-year events. They are also determining the size of the renovated stadium.

So? What difference does it make? You think 20k in a 40K stadium looks better than 30K in a 55? So?

30k in a 40k stadium looks better than 20k. 30k in a 55k stadium looks better than 20k. So, yes.

Without those two games, the stadium would likely be reduced to 35-40k… a number more suitable for the UofM & a number that would allow the university the opportunity to make more money off of ticket sales.

100% fact. Having said that, I will not be surprised if capacity somehow ends up below 50,000. I hope so.

Me too…

The sports world seems to be going for reduced capacity with increased fan experience. We would benefit with fewer seats.

Yep, less is more.

Reduce capacity and add as much premium spaces that you can. That is sports. That’s what sells.

If we could wave a magic wand, I'd want 40k seatbacks with a good amount of premium seating on campus

Fan experience is everything in this day and age. Hard to pry someone away from their new 85” flat screen to go sit on a hard bench. And I believe fan experience is absolutely affected by stadium size. If you’re among 35k in a 35-40k stadium, you know you’re in the right place. If you’re among 35k in a 55k stadium, you might not feel quite so special.

My main concern has never been feeling special. My #1 concern has always been being there.

no we won't.

You know, we can get some feedback on attendance when the AAC defectors play their first Big XII season. Let's see what happens to their attendance. We'll need a thread just for that where people can call each other names too!

2021 Miss St: 43k
2019 Ole Miss: 44k
2017 UCLA: 46k
2016 Kansas: 34k
2015 Ole Miss: 60k
2013 Duke: 44k
2011 Miss St: 34k
2009 Ole Miss: 45k
2008 Louisville: 40k

Yea, Memphis fans find an excuse even when a P5 comes to town.

2010 Tennessee 39k
2007 ole miss 45k
2006 Tennessee 61k
2005 ole miss 53 k
2003 ole miss 53k
2002 miss. St 28k
2000 miss st. 28k
2000 Tennessee 63k
1999 ole miss 57k
1999 Missouri 29k
1998 miss. St. 28k
1997 Minnesota 23k
1996 Miami 32k
1996 miss st. 38k
1996 Tennessee 65k

Throw out Tennessee and Ole miss. We have very few games over 40k with P5
Surprisingly Mississippi st. Games are low attendance.

There sure were a lot of us there for that '96 game.

at least 100% more. I was there with a friend whose son had been on the team. He had recently died in a motorcycle crash. There were many tears shed that day, a few of them were happy tears.

RE: Simmons bank memorial stadium
I was not there for the '96 Tennessee game, but was in the student section for the '87 win over Alabama. NTR but was also at the '81 Liberty Bowl for Bear Bryant's last game. Very special.

I moved away from Memphis in 2016. I am coming into town for the Showboats game on June 17, and hope to get to a Tigers game this fall. Lots of memories in the old Liberty Bowl stadium, and can't wait to see what it looks like in a couple of years. Since an on-campus stadium isn't likely to ever happen, the $150-200M worth of improvements and upgrades is is the next best thing.

North Carolina installed seatbacks and reduced their capacity from 60k to around 48k.
