Waiting every 7 to 10 years between presidents hoping the next one will pick-up the ball is not a strategy. It is unlikely that any president will ever lead on this, for a variety of reasons (cost, unsure of success and support, facility arms races, future of college football is uncertain, plenty of other projects and initiatives to advance the university).
A group of smart, savvy, committed proponents should put together
detailed objectives (FBS, FCS or something else?) and road map and LEAD THE PRESIDENT. This would include, of course, addressing questions about paying for infrastructure with committed resources or pledges. Multi-millions need to come to the table.
Meanwhile, building a culture of more robust support for our existing programs would say a lot. Also, perhaps contrary to first glance, the recent student vote where about 1,000 students out of more than 40,000 voted for it, in reality, did nothing to help the cause. It showed weakness. Also, referenda mean something ONLY if the administration is already interested. Otherwise, they are meaningless. Petitions, too, are nearly meaningless.
