But we've also had issues. Other than this year's team, we haven't really reached our stride until after Christmas. With Penny's teams, it's taken a while to gel.

My concerns with this team:
1.) This will be a late arriving team. Given the gelling issues mentioned above, even if we put together an all-star mercenary team, we're going to have issues early on.

2.) I don't even think we can put together an all-star mercenary team based on what's in the portal. The deadline is only a couple of weeks away. At best right now, we might be able to scrape together a Tchewa or a Cisse underneath and maybe a Bradley in the backcourt. That's a bubble-team at best.

3.) The roster is so damn imbalanced. We really need TWO bigs and TWO pgs AND a scorer. Penny can pull a rabbit (or two) out of his hat, but I don't see this roster being very balanced. This is going to push his positionless basketball philosophy to the brink.

At best, I see us getting a roster together that can vie for a title in the American and maybe settle in as an 8 to 10 seed. That's not what any one was hoping a couple of months ago with our recruiting class.

This will be a big test for Penny. Will he double-down on positionless basketball? Will we see Dandridge back on the roster? If we're rolling with Malco, Jayden, and Ashton-- and we struggle-- do the complaints of nepotism and stubbornness get louder?

Yes

Do they want to, though? As a (crooked) realtor once told me, "Where there is confusion, there is profit."
Does the NCAA have motivation to reign in the transfer portal? Not being snarky here, I'm just wondering.

I think that realtor failed to play that to the end...

... which creates a bubble which eventually pops.

I think there motivation is not having Final Fours like this year and championship games like this year (as mentioned right above). They want their top tier teams and 1 & 2 seeds advancing, not FAU and SDSU.

Penny one week ago:

“The (point guard) area, the center area,” said Hardaway when asked what he is currently prioritizing. “I don’t know if we want to play small-ball or if we want to go get a legit center. (But) those two areas, for sure, are something on the priority list.”

Please, no (although the last time we played small-ball with Pastner, we made the second round of the tournament two years in a row).

Another disadvantage with the transfer portal-- with our new conference, we HAVE to hit the ground running and win early OOC games. If this is an indication of things to come, we are going to continue to have late gelling teams. Building late-arriving rosters puts us especially at a disadvantage.

I don't understand what this has to do with anything. It's almost like you haven't watched a minute of basketball.

Yep to both. In this era it's going to be more about how well you build up, not so much about what all are you losing.

Deion Sanders went into Colorado talking about getting rid of players. With all the hype that was going on with Colorado's spring game, 18 decided to transfer after the spring game, including the top performing receiver in that game. The article also says they've had 31 players transfer since April 15th.
I hear you its a new era but cmon now. You gotta bring back more than two players who combined for like 8 ppg, one being your walk on caliber son. Other top programs arent experiencing *that* much transition.

Yeah but we also had 10 seniors (11 if you want to include Jahmar Young) so that's a unique situation on its own. And with the ones that had a shot at coming back, how many of them would you really want back? I'm honestly fine with the turnover from this past season.

But WHY did we have 10 seniors?

Being too heavily reliant on the portal created a senior-heavy team.

The portal is a failed experiment that needs to end.

42% of those who enter the portal do not find a new school.

4% pullout of the portal.

of the 56% that do final a new school, 13% end up at a lower division.

In 2021 600 players ended up with no place to play. Even more importantly 600 students which didn't return to school.

Good question. Maybe Penny wanted to go after as much experience as possible this past season? Seems like he's experimenting with compositions.

But it's way too soon to say the transfer portal has failed. One of the biggest problems is that the NCAA gave players that extra COVID year the year before they changed the transfer rule. So now the portal is staying full with players that also likely have that extra year potentially causing the glut we see now. It's going to be a few more years before they are all out of the system.

Also the NCAA finalized changes to transfer waivers to cut down on multiple transfers. I wish they would have allowed a waiver for coaching changes, but even that's going to be blocked for now.

Agree, I don't see the transfer portal as failed, at least for schools (maybe it exposes some poor thinking by some players looking for a quick fix to PT or playing on a winning team). And I don't see any downside to a "senior heavy" team. Experience is a hard to find asset.

Yep I agree about the poor thinking. Too many are probably coming in expecting instant PT or "being the man". I could understand if you've been at a school two or three years, not seeming much of an increase in PT, and the writing is on the wall that it won't be changing. But some of these kids aren't even giving a chance for the older players to move on and take over their sports after they leave.

And that senior-heavy team gave us the best seasonal record under Penny so far. Now that the NCAA issue is out of the way I can see Penny trying to build teams that have a better mix of experience and youth.

It needs some changes but it is not a failed experiment. You are drawing silly conclusions for the data.

13% end up at a lower division. That is not necessarily a bad thing for the players. Most likely the level they belong at and most likely results in them playing instead of riding the bench.

600 players with "no place to play"... I played college baseball for two years. Had then been a transfer portal I would have entered it after my sophomore year. I talked with other coaches and had the opportunity to transfer. In the end, I simply decided I just did not want to play anymore and wanted to focus on academics. So, 1. I was not left with no place to play and most importantly 2. I returned to school and ended up with a degree

I would imagine the majority of that 600 are more similar to my situation then having no team wanting them and also not returning to school altogether...

I think it is mostly a failure, but necessary at the same time.

BEFORE:
Players were paid under the table, The difference in benefits ranged from players having only a scholarship, to players being paid anywhere from impermissible benefit, meals, cars, up to probably low 6 figures. Player movement no longer restricted to having to sit out for a year. Every player benefitted and every player at least had a scholarship.

NOW:
Everything is legit. The difference in the range of benefits is now, a player not having a scholarship anywhere, so no free education, and no spot at a D1 program, to players making millions of dollars.

A much higher percentage of athletes are getting some sort of compensation, and at the top of the food chain, the elite players are getting fair compensation for the millions of dollars they generate for their schools.

The "only" ones being harmed are the bottom 25% on the food chain. Is that bad? Of course. Even with NIL and freedom of movement, the core goal should be for the 95% that don't play professionally to get a free education, and a degree that will serve them for the rest of their lives.

We are one of the only schools that sees the extreme at both ends. Our basketball program can attract the best talent and pay top level NIL money. There is nothing stopping us from competing at the highest level. Our football program can't come close dollar wise. What will save us is that we should be at the top of the G5, competing for conference titles and a trip to NY6 or whatever expanded playoff they come up with.

In the end, overall, it is a failure.

At this point, both Jayden and Ashton might both be starters.

Will we blame Mikey? A slow-coming together roster (even with the pieces we're able to cobble together, we have very little stability and likely they won't be meshing together until late summer)?

I'll admit that I'm down on Penny, but I really think that his high-water mark will be "almost beating Gonzaga."

As long as we make a sweet 16 next season, all is fine.... Anything short of a Sweet 16 and I will be down on Penny as well.

It's time.

Rather, his departure furthers the narrative that the Tiger program — due to so many players leaving the last few years — is not stable and desirable. Vanderbilt is experiencing this too. Six key VU players have entered the transfer portal the last few months. There is a negative perception associated with such significant losses.

As a long-time fan of Vanderbilt and Memphis, I am concerned for both men's hoops programs. And I have to wonder if the coaching staffs might be a major factor in both cases.

Troubling.

The "narrative" is mostly from a dozen or so of our miserable, out of touch with reality, message board posters. Nothing more.

I hope you are correct, Stammers.

Nothing is stable. Not just us.

I'm glad you added that, saved me the trouble. This isn't just a Memphis issue by any stretch of the imagination.

Does the NCAA have motivation to reign in the transfer portal? Not being snarky here, I'm just wondering.

The only motivation for the NCAA is for there to be a few more Final 4’s that looked like this last one. Let senior laden “mid-majors” on teams that have played together for several years start raining on the blue bloods parade & there will either be changes or a split.

Spot on.

Seems like he's experimenting with com

Your argument is what it has done for the schools, but what about the players?

55% of those who enter the portal either do not find a new school (42%) or end up at a lower division(13%).

When 42% of the players in the portal no longer have a school to attend then the portal has failed.

These players lose an opportunity to gain marketable skills that allow them to provide for themselves and their families for the remainder of their lives.

There are over 1 million high school athletes and almost every one of them at one time dreams of playing pro ball.

But only around 250 of that million make it.

You have around half a million who play sports in college.

Only 0.050% will ever play pro sports.

But they focus more on playing the game believing they will be one of the 0.050%.

So much so that if things aren't as they think they should be they just up and transfer because they think a change of schools will make them pro-worthy.

When they can't catch on with another school they lose out on getting an education and developing marketable skills.

Instead of making it easier for athletes to move from school to school and play ball.

We should focus on what happens to them after their playing days are over.

That last sentence … nobody cares about that anymore, not even the athletes themselves. We are a now society and the hell with the consequences.

Correction. Didn't know the high school to college ncaa rate was so high though.

You mean the players who generally make their choice to leave a scholarship (sure a small percentage are pushed out) but can't find a new scholarship or better NIL $ elsewhere, now are like the other 95% of college students who have to pay their tuition to get an education? And we're supposed to feel bad for them to have been so shortsighted & leftout?

RE: Johnathan Lawson in Portal
There is something wrong or grossly misleading about the stat of 40+% of players who enter the portal don’t find a new school. That suggests that a very high percentage of scholarships are going I filled every year. But we know that is not the case. Schools are filling their scholarships so for every player who chooses to enter and doesn’t find a home there is another player who is filling that scholarship and getting the opportunity you describe.
