Should EMU Add Hockey
If a small school like quianniapac (sp?) can win the national championship maybe EMU should add the sport. It would be great to have a 5000 seat ice rink on campus. Maybe EMU moves away from baseball to hockey?

As much as I love hockey, it is not a sport for the fiscally challenged.

Only if Gameabove gets involved financially, then YES! How many MAC schools have hockey? BGSU, Miami, WMU?

The Detroit area has a great interest in hockey. Could you build an arena in conjunction with a high minor league hockey club and share the facility and use it to host non hockey events?

Dear Friends,
No. The maintenance of artificial ice is a large cost, and hockey equipment is probably as expensive as football equipment for the individual player.

I was thinking that baseball and hockey have similar number of scholarships. The bonus that hockey provides a university is that it could be an attendance draw on campus. Baseball however draws very, very little attendance perhaps a 100 people? Let me know our attendance figures.

Should have back in the 1980s. Like many said here, hard to afford it right now but the amount of interest and high-level hockey in the area should have been a thing EMU did.

But, this university has historically messed up many decisions.

Baseball is free. No tickets. So unless someone is counting heads then there is no data.

Baseball is free admission but costing EMU scholarships. I just feel baseball no longer has value to the student body. We need a sport played on campus that unites the alumni and student body. Hockey for sure would fit that need but would require capital investment. If not hockey, how about another sport that could be played on campus and draw attendance?

I assume EMU would rather contract rather than add a replacement sport.

Would more fans attend lacrosse over baseball?

Yeah, but EMU has a Title IX problem.

RE: Should EMU Add Hockey
I do think EMU/Ypsilanti could support two hockey teams and an ice rink. Nobody has mentioned how an ice rink is a revenue source. Ice time is hard to come by for youth and adult teams. EMU could rent it out for leagues, skating lessons, open skating. Could also run IM programs like broomball and curling. A figure skating team would be relatively cheap to run as well.

Women's hockey is growing quickly and there are no D1 teams in Michigan yet most teams have 2-4 players from Michigan. There are also big talent pools of athletes across the Midwest and Ontario who escape to the Northeast. The team could be competitive in short time.

This could also be some sort of partnership with the city of Ypsilanti as I don't believe there is a public rink in city limits.

Dear eastcoasteagle,
I am a member of the Detroit Curling Club. I have curled on hockey ice. It is not good. To encourage Intramural curling on hockey ice, would discourage the activity. Plus you would need to purchase the stones that are used in the game, as well as brooms, shoes, etc.
