My wife has always said that Memphis is the section 8 of conf realignment. We move in and everyone else can’t get out fast enough.

Bingo!!!

So I take you believe diversity is the reason your white bretheren won't invite Memphis into the fold.

Demographics has a lot more to it than race.

R.C. Johnson failed to sell the vision to Fred Smith of what being a member of "Power" conference would have done for Memphis.

When it came to the Big East, it was Tulane that played that role.

02-13-banana Fred Smith did everything he could possibly do when Memphis made the big push to get into a power five conference. He was going to donate millions to a conference and also sponsor their bowl game if they were invited to the conference. What more could he have done ?

The Big East disintegrated before we ever played a game in it. In 2013 the AAC had BCS inclusion for that 1 season and then it was over.

Now, Houston, Cincinnati, and UCF have moved on up just like Louisville, Virginia Tech, Florida State, South Carolina, and other schools in that are former conference mates.

USF has fallen back but will probably be scooped up instead of Memphis just like Tulane, SMU, Gonzaga, and, if it takes a few more years before the next shake up / expansion, so will FAU, UTSA, UNT, and who knows who else.

AAC has over expanded and diluted it's product. There was no need to panic and jump to 14 schools. 05-nono

This is a time when the football program needed to continue to shine and have a strong, dynamic head coach. Silverfield isn't that guy. He's more of the Josh Partner ' happy to be here' type.

The difference between him and Norvell, Fuente is jarring.

While basketballball floundered for a decade and then Penny had to learn on the job and football went backwards other schools stepped up, made great hires, and got rewarded.

Spot on analogy

Some of y'all have some self-esteem and insecurity issues. Memphis is a great university and a wonderful city. Stop talking nonsense about it. It ain't true.

I know exactly what kind of city we have. I live here. Do you ? At my age I worry when I go to the grocery store or get gas. And I rarely go out to eat. Driving on 240 or 385 is like being at Talladega or Daytona. Plus the city leadership has never given a damn about the University. Id love to leave but being on a fixed income I’m stuck here until death.

Eagle, sorry to hear about your situation and I think you are confusing two very different ideas. Let me try to clarify. Here are 2 completely different statements:

1) Memphis has too much crime, particularly violent crime, and it needs to be effectively reduced and dealt with by the authorities.

2) Memphis has such a bad reputation for crime that it is preventing P5 athletic conferences from accepting the University of Memphis.

I agree with point 1 but not with point 2. Violent crime is a terrible problem in many cities and it should definitely be reduced! We need more good cops on the streets and anything else that can be done to reduce violent crime, which is a horrible problem in many cities, and is unfair to the residents who live there.

However, Memphis' crime problem has nothing to do with athletic conference realignment. Outside of Memphis, nobody thinks about Memphis's crime rate. Crime is a problem in most cities all over the country, and Memphis is maybe worse than most, but it's not what people across the country think of when they think about Memphis.

And by the way I lived in Memphis for about 17 years in various locations, had an apt in midtown, one in the university area, and then I owned a little house in the colonial acres neighborhood just off Mt Moriah.

I don’t disagree with your general point, but I’m afraid you are mistaken about the perception of the city. Almost without fail, when I tell someone out of state that I’m from Memphis they invariably mention the crime.

Vision of Fred Smith ? He tried to buy us in back in 2016 and they the big 12 laughed in his face. I’m no RC fan but he was long gone by then and also football by then had turned itself around. To continue to blame one man for this is comical but that’s typical Memphis wanting a scapegoat. Now we want to blame and a guy that been president for only a year. Once again did Rudd and Bowen get us in a P5? It’s not about commitment or the administration but hey keep throwing those scapegoats out there

Do you know how many businesses are less than 5 miles from the AAC office that can throw that kind of money around. Dozens.

What I thought should have happened was for FedEx to sponsor the Big XII as much as possible up front. Then if we didn't get in he could pull those ads and sponsorships.

The problem wasn't the incentives that Fred Smith was offering; the problem was that RC was such a brainless embarrassment, he wasn't allowed to talk to anyone. So you had Shirley who was clueless, and RC that wasn't allowed to contact anyone. The fact that the CEO of a company was doing the negotiating for a university, with the conference was the issue.

Having been in Houston a couple of weeks ago, I can vouch for this statement. That was CRAZY! 04-jawdrop

07-coffee3 Not completely true since most of the time on 610 it is bumper to bumper and five mph traffic.

Yep. Nothing like sitting on 610/288/10/45 for an hour to go a mile. Houston is a mega city. The two aren’t even close to comparison.
