Yikes. That was brutal indeed. Finishing 10th and 14-17 seems like an off year for Norton.

Random, but I noticed down the stretch there that in the women's game, you are allowed to advance the ball off a timeout like in the NBA. There's been a push over the last few years to NBA-ify the men's game (4 quarters, no one and one, wider lane) and I am hoping we can keep that at bay.

We only have 2 seniors & 5 injured players (at least 2 with ACL). Although it’s going to hurt losing Whitley, this team should be better as a whole. It’s hard to believe that Deshields and Ware are freshmen. They’re the best ball handlers that we’ve had since Miyah Barnes. I hope we get another true center to back up McGhee when she gets into foul trouble. It’ll be tougher competition next year, but I think they’ll be ready.

So close to knocking off the Toppers. The Whitley 3s where she got fouled were so close to going in. Deshields missed two point blank layups. Almost

I agree. We’ve got two top-notch prep players already signed with two more scholarships available. I bet Coach Norton finds two instant-help players to add to the prep signees.

The fight in this year’s team was incredible. So many teams would have rolled over after losing a third of the squad to injuries. The Blazers battled toe to toe with the No. 2 seed today. We were so close.

I was shocked as well. I’m guessing she was getting homesick, because she was averaging 17 minutes/game.

She may well be looking for more playing time. On a side note, former Blazer Caitlynn Daniels was at the men’s NIT game with Emily and a couple of other Blazers the other night. Caitlynn transferred to Division II power Drury University last year, and Caitlynn and Emily were in the same UAB recruiting class. It might mean nothing more than other than old friends spending spring break together, or … who knows? All I know is I never thought for a second that Emily would enter the portal.

I don’t follow the women’s team like I should. Was Emily a starter? Why the shock?

Her PT went way down this season compared to last season, especially in the 1sf half of the season, but she was playing 20/30 minutes per game down the stretch.

Emily’s been a starter off and on for three years, plus she was starting down the stretch this season. She averaged about 12 points a game last season, but her minutes fell a bit this year as UAB’s freshman guards Denim DeShields and Desiree Ware claimed playing time, especially Denim.
But I’m not entirely sure the reason for her entering the portal is playing time.
For three years, Emily has been the most do-anything-for-the-team player we have (besides Margaret Whitley, of course). You couldn’t ask for a better teammate. No ego. Supreme attitude. She’s so well-liked she was voted as co-team captain as a Covid sophomore, along with fifth-year graduate Margaret and sixth-year graduate Lyndsey Robson.
I’m really at a loss to imagine what her reason for leaving could be.
Another side note: I see Northern Illinois coach Lisa Carlsen liked Emily’s portal announcement on Twitter. Emily’s from Illinois.
HOLY CRAP, I see Emily’s bio is no longer listed with the rest of this year’s team on the UAB website although the departing seniors’ bios are still there.
I don’t understand this at all.

Thank you for that background info. Yes, I had gone to the UAB website to find out more about her, and her bio was wiped clean. That was quick and apparently permanent. Who knows?

I think it is probably as simple as her PT was likely to continue to to decline as the two frosh will dominate the team next season

I like HCRN but at some point they need to turn the corner. I know they had a really good team the COVID year and could have won it. Biggest thing I see is if you think the Men's OOC is weak, take a look at the Women's each year. To me it really stands out when they have to play top 100 teams. I do know for a fact that Mark has been told by the AAC that our football OOC schedule must improve. I wonder if anything was said about the other sports?

Once someone enters their name into the portal they are no longer on the team according to the NCAA. That means we have to treat them like any other potential recruit that is not on the team. We cant talk about them publicly, that would be tampering. We cant let them use our facilities, that would an impermissible benefit. We basically have to pretend they arent here.

You have a source for this?
That’s not the way I understand it (but I also don’t really follow recruiting and such)

It's what I was told by someone involved with UAB athletics when I asked for an off the record update on what was going on with a football player that had entered his name in the portal.
