You know, of the 3 safeties taken round one. He's the only one still playing in the NFL.

He's not a superstar, but a damn good player whose been useful in all areas of the secondary. Very proud and happy for him.

Next season will be Ward's 10th. That will make him third all-time longest tenured Huskie in the NFL. 1 year behind Diem and 3 behind Hollis. He is currently tied with Free and Turner at 9.

What a great success story. Nobody saw him having this kind of career. Maybe this will be the year he stays healthy and gets into the Pro- Bowl.

Its kind of interesting that we to talk about past Huskies in the NFL, Hollis Thomas is hardly mentioned. Turner, Diem, Leshon are brought up alot. Heck even Todd Peat. But rarely do I see Hollis brought when we get nostalgic.

A lot of us didn’t see Hollis play. I was an incoming freshman when Chris Finlen and Frisman Jackson was throwing passes for Justin McCarreins & Darryl Hill.

No, I am glad you brought him up, I forget about him when I think of Huskies in the NFL. I shouldn't, especially a Huskie that had that long of a career.

The other guy that get overlooked is Clarence Vaughn and he has a Super Bowl ring

Clarence Vaughn has two Super Bowl rings. Super Bowls XXII and XVI.

That's wild. We forget how crazy athletic these kids are.

I used to run laps and do sprints around the field house at the rec. The football players would be playing pickup basketball on the courts. Each and everyone of those guys could fly. Defying gravity by jumping over each other and dunking so hard I fear the rims would break. It was an amazing sight to see in person.

I used to play basketball with Hollis on Tuesday nights in the Fieldhouse with the Athletic Trainers.

Yeah, Hollis wasn't flying through the air or exactly flying up and down the court. But he did have the heaviest arms ever and when you ever made contact with one of them, it was like hitting one of those sand bag tubes people put in the bed of their pickups.

I feel like i've told this story before but...I'll tell it again. For whatever reason, I always ended up gaurding him and, as I'm sure you all know, the guy you guard is usually the guy who guards you on the other end.

Well, we were playing full court and we were going up and down and his team went up the floor and there was a turnover or something and the ball went my team's direction on a semi-fastbreak. I started to go in that direction and then just....didn't go anywhere. Hollis had a mitt-full of my shirt and just held on to me. I looked at him and he said..."Nah kid...we ain't goin' this time....they'll be right back".

I said..."good point" and even though the fast break kind of broke down...we just stood together on the other end of the court like two spectators until the ball came back.

The NIU to NFL pipeline is looking pretty soft these days. Need to pick up the recruiting and development fast. The current staff has completely underwhelmed in that respect and NIU might have zero NFL presence in a few years. Would hate to see that but certainly seems possible.

Pretty liberal use of the phrase "to the NFL pipeline" there.

IDK.....Maybe not a pipeline but a steady flow:

01 - Hampton, Mccareins, Diem
02 - Hill
04 - Fleck, Sandy, Turner
05 - Cieslak
06 - Williams, Hurd
07 - Wolfe,Free, Nordin
09 - English
10 - Davis
11 - Spann, Smith, Wilson
12 - Harnish, Palmer, Wedige
14 - Ward, Bishop, Melvin
15 - Brown
16 - TLL
17 - Golladay
18 - Beebe
19 - Scharping, Smith, Blake
21 - Heflin, Steckler

17 out of 21 seasons NIU managed to put 33 players on an NFL roster. There hasn't been a two year gap where no NIU player hasn't made an NFL team. But I feel like one is coming.

That is a very very nice list. Thank you for putting that together.

Hammock needs to step up. As much grief as we give Carey. He put out some NFL talent.

You're a lucky guy, she was hot! It must have been hard to shoot with one hand while your other hand covered the front of your shorts.
