Umm, how is this Toledo team going to stop this big dude? He's one of the best players in the nation. He's 7'1"!! He might go off for 40+ points. This guy is gonna give me nightmares considering how we play against MAC teams with quality bigs 03-melodramatic

That's reassuring. How cool would it be if our women and men swept Michigan?

RE: Hunter Dickinson
Darn it. Imo, this was one of the worst possible NIT match-ups for us. Looks alot like Dayton last season, but with an even better big man to face. We’ll have no answer for Dickinson, and to keep up we’ll have to make an awful lot of 3s. Every Rocket that steps on the court will need to be productive.

This game may come down to which team is more pissed about not being in the NCAA tournament and which team is alternatively sulking about that same thing.

On a side note, how did UAB get a 4 seed? We beat them.

RE: Hunter Dickinson
The key like all NIT matchups are which teams are motivated to play. Will Toledo be motivated to play after putting all of their eggs in one basket to get to the NCAAs Tournament for the 1st time in 43 years. Will Michigan be motivated to play after severely underachieving this season. Like the previous poster said, Hunter Dickenson will be a matchup nightmare for Toledo. And his back up is a 6-11 Freshmen who has alot of potential. However, Michigan has been up and down all season with inconsistent play from their Point Guard however their 2 guard Bufkin has really developed throughout the season. They get very little production off their bench. Great opportunity for Toledo to play on National TV(ESPN) and show the country they are better than what they showed Saturday night in Cleveland! Also, how ironic is this matchup as their are reports floating around that Michigan is going to be looking for a Point Guard in the Portal and that one RayJ Dennis will get to audition for the part on Tuesday night! Hopefully RayJ puts on a show for J. Howard and then tells him he's not interested in transferring!

This.

We have ten fouls to give. Last time we played them, refs let Dickensone push and hip check all over the court. If he does and takes out Edu's knee, have Moss coldcock the mfer.

Dickenson can be a head case but push comes to shove, he's a good sport. He's going to play physical and take what the refs give him, as he should. Shumate has no chance in a physical confrontation with this guy but he can get some wins otherways. Also to remember, Dickenson can hit the three. He's not just an inside guy. Easy to find B10 highlights online for those not familiar. I'm not really sure why UM fell apart this year. Coach can be a head case too.

So if my math is correct; 68 teams in the dance, 16 seeds in the NIT - Toledo was not seeded - which at best makes us the 84th ranked team in the country. Toledo's NET ranking is 82. Michigan is 61.

Only MAC team in the tourney unless I missed something.

Adding: Kent is 59, UAB 57.

A quick look at their conference nearly every game they lost, even Purdue and IU was due to heavy scoring by the other team's guards and fairly low scoring from the front court, except the IU game. . Do we have any guard's that can score?

that's one metric. In RPI, Kenpom and others were more in the 60s. in offensive efficiency we are #1.

this game comes down to energy and really running the heck out of the offense. michigan does not know our tendencies and has minimal time and interest in film study. run offense, run offense, get easy shots, don't take tough shots you aren't gonna make, move the ball. shumate will give up layups and dunks to dickinson, but he will get more open looks than he did against jacobs and payton. this is a game we win by outscoring michigan. play fast. play the bench. finish strong.

and, this is what's wrong with college basketball tournaments. toledo and michigan are the natural pairing by vicinity. but having the game at michigan means little. they aren't excited to play toledo in the NIT when they expected a NCAA season. but if the game was in toledo, between local interest, rocket diehards, and travelling michigan fans it would be a full house and great atmosphere.

why is youngstown st playing in stillwater, OK when Toledo and Cincinnati are right there? why are none of these 3 ohio teams playing each other?

first round NIT games are sometimes played during spring break week without students in the crowd.

below are mid majors and others who got home games
Liberty 26-8 (tied for league, lost in tourney champ, overall lighter schedule than UT)
Cincinnati 21-12 (and didn't beat anyone very good)
New Mexico 21-12 (9-11 in MWC)
UAB 25-9
Washington St 17-16
N Texas 26-7 and deserving
*Sam Houston 25-7, had some good wins, gets the higher seed but because of scheduling logistics it appears Santa Clara 23-9 hosts

toledo-michigan winner plays the yale-vandy winner in a pretty loaded quad of the bracket.

Oklahoma St is actually playing at Youngstown St because of a scheduling conflict with their arena similar to Dayton having to play at Toledo last Season due to The NCAA First Four being played at the Dayton Arena. As for the game itself, I agree we are going to have to score a lot of points to win and a major key to that is Shumate getting out of his late season funk which cost The Rockets big time Saturday night against Kent St. Also, another key will be the play of Edu as I think he will get more minutes than normal to try and slow down Dickenson and his 6-11 Freshman backup.

I absolutely expected Cincinnati to be playing Toledo or Youngstown State based on the regionality principle. Them seeding North Texas is why it didn't work out that way though, since they were really kind of the only team even remotely close to Okie State in the NIT field.

Michigan has 3 future pros in HD, Jett Howard and Kobe Bufkin. I can't see UT slowing HD down. Best case scenario is he gets in foul trouble on the other end or nobody is hitting shots when he passes out of double teams. I imagine Michigan is going to reliably get good shots in this game though.

They have a very good freshman PG who could become their next Zavier Simpson.

They have a talented but raw freshman back-up C who didn't have a great season but is good enough to give UT fits in the post on both ends.

They bring a sharpshooter grad transfer from Duke off the bench who, like others, hasn't made a consistent impact, but still has the ability to torch teams that leave him open.

They have a few MAC quality role players and a handful of guys at the end of the bench who are complete unknowns.

When Michigan turns it on, they can hang with anyone in the country. When they don't, their floor is very low as evidenced by the CMU loss.

That's probably a more fair assessment. I watched part of a Michigan at the beginning of the season, and they looked like a lifeless and unenthusiastic mess. I watched their overtime loss to Indiana, and it was as a good of a game as I've seen this year. For me, I wonder two things. Can Toledo be ready to play mentally, after having their season hopes and all of their momentum ended on Saturday night? If Michigan plays strong on the inside, can Toledo do anything about it? Watching Shumate try to play center Saturday night and try to get open on a 6'8" defender with a 10 ' arm span looked exhausting. Maybe if things start to go south, Edu can sit on Shumate's shoulders and just stand in the paint, while the offense runs a 3 on 5 offense.

I'd flip that. Shumate has a quick eye and a good outlet pass. But does that count as one player or two?

The last time Toledo played Michigan, the interior guys were new, young, and very overmatched. This is a more mature Toledo team. UT needs to use their quickness, and not get rattled. Be patient on offense, handle the ball well, and stay in the game. Michigan is big and will take this game very serious. Toledo needs to get after them. Go Rockets!!
