The NIU basketball court is terrible but the EMU (and Boise State's too) football field is worse.

Watching broadcasts at EMU feel like watching black & white television. Then you add the players running around with color uniforms just really messes with my eyes and is nauseating.

Since you're a NIU fan, I imagine you've just become some what adjusted to it. I tried watching the NIU/Kent game earlier this year, but I ended up just turning the TV off. It was that bad.

I don't have ESPN+/3 anymore or live in Illinois so I hardly ever see NIU or any MAC basketball games. I don't really have time to watch cable/network TV so i got rid of my Hulu Live TV subscription after they sent me an email that the price was going up to $74.99 per month. Mostly I just see post-game highlights from YouTube and follow scores on the ESPN phone app.

But I can definitely see where you're coming from. It is an ugly basketball court. From what I recall it was a used court that they purchased from a previous NCAA Tournament location and they added those terrible graphics. I could be wrong about that though...

FWIW, I assume for whatever I pay for ESPN+ I could watch ESPN, ESPN+, ESPN3, etc. on a PC, tablet, phone, etc. and NOT pay for cable or satellite.

I pay the yearly subscription ($99.99) and get a ton of EMU games, e.g., FB, MBB and even WBB. I could cut the cord if I wished.

I consider the price a bargain.

I usually get it in September for college football then cancel it in March once the MAC tournament ends. I did the annual subscription for a year, but realized there was nothing I cared to watch during the spring or summer so I was paying for nothing.

I may be in the minority, but I kind of like it. It’s part of their brand as mentioned earlier, and at the minimum it doesn’t hurt my eyes like Boise/Eastern Washington/Central Arkansas.

Winner! NIU's bball court is probably the worst of the worst when it comes to special designs. I personally really like EMU's athletic facilities. The gray turf is definitely unique and they've done a nice job embracing it. If only they could fill the stadium up with fans.

Everyone has their threshold when it comes to cord cutting. If I had more free time I might feel a Hulu TV subscription at $74.99 is worth it. But that's $900 a year for TV I barely watch. That's not even including the Netflix, HBO Max, Amazon Prime, etc. subscriptions. Whenever I watched live TV I found myself only watching the same three channels.

As for ESPN+, there's just way too many basketball games in a season and if I'm being honest with myself I'd probably only find time to watch maybe five of them. Not worth the $100 to me.

I travel a lot for work and I like to do a lot of projects around the house, working on cars, etc with my free time.

I've never been a basketball guy, so I looked up those two courts, and yeah, those are BAD. So ugly. What is with this trend in college athletics of creating busy-looking playing surfaces that distract from the players and the game?

As much as I don't like EMU's field (the gray turf + track = bad), the fields at Eastern Washington and Central Arkansas are worse. Real eyesores.

Never liked the 1950's movie look to the football fields.

And for some reason, my old high school did the exact same thing. 07-coffee3

You're right, i don't get that distraction thing either! and yes, those fields are actually worse than EMU's.

I just saw the local cable company that I get my internet from is offering a 15 channel bundle for $30/month, with ESPN and ESPN2 among the available channels.

I swear I could have seen five or six more games this season if Kent State was not going well this season so their games get pushed to ESPNU or ESPN3 or once (IIRC) even ESPN2 and my Disney / Hulu / ESPN+ bundle deal didn't include them.

I don't know how they expect to sell ESPN+ as a thing in itself if they won't at least simulcast ESPN3 games on ESPN+.

It's because they aren't trying to make ESPN+ a substitute for paying for a cable subscription to ESPN. They want to try to make you pay for both.

I doubt that the MAC would try and control a field color. It does what Eastern is trying to do, draw attention to their football program. I actually really like the grey field and I really love the NIU basketball court. I love different.

You're right, I did notice that ESPN3 games are not included in the ESPN+ subscription. So you have to pay for a cable TV package to get ESPN/ESPN2 and ESPN3 online games.

If ESPN3 and ESPN+ are online streams then it should all be part of the $100 ESPN+ package you pay for, but as kreed said above they are trying to get you to pay ESPN for more things.

I just got tired of paying for so many subscriptions and cable TV so I cut out a bunch of things I don't really watch and just got an HD TV antenna to get all the local channels for free.

Have no idea about any rumors, but I don't mind the grey turf. It does make it look like a black and white TV, but I have no problem with them trying to be different.

I know, that's why I didn't say anything about simulcasting their linear TV channels ... even ESPNU or ESPNEWS ... but surely the ESPN3 offerings are not flipping anybody from getting cable with ESPN and not doing so.

While I don't necessarily disagree, I feel that's ESPN concern. There would be no other rationale for ESPN3 to even exist otherwise. Let's say someone is a die-hard Miami (OH) basketball fan who had few games, if any, picked up for live TV. That means with your model that fan could watch the entire slate of Miami basketball season with ESPN+ (excluding a few OOC road games that ESPN might not own rights for). That fan would then have no reason to pay for ESPN cable packages. That's what ESPN is trying to prevent.

TL;DR they want to give you enough content on ESPN+ that you feel the need to get it, but not enough that you feel you can survive without cable.

RE: Does Everyone Hate Gray Turf? (Okay with the MAC?)
Question, is anyone here able to get ESPN3 broadcasts to work on their mobile device(s)?

Mine has not worked for years.

Whenever I select my provider (Xfinity...comcast) it takes me to a page to enter my login credentials. Then after I do that, it says I'm logged in and then it thinks and spins for awhile but then takes me back to the page to select my provider again.

I've contacted their support in the past, but they never respond.

I can however watch the ESPN3 games on my TV through my Xfinity cable connection.

Frustrating.
