TRANSFER PORTAL
One of the last remaining difference makers for ETSU, Will Huzzie has entered the portal. This is the worst case scenario. We are locked in with this terrible coach and there’s nothing we can do about it and all of our difference makers are gone.

Understand, but I’m not all that upset about players from this team who enter the portal. This team was 3-8. I’m not going to lose shed any tears over whether the players from this team transfer. If you want to stay, we’ll support you. But if this isn’t where you want to be, go find where that is. I’m over this stuff.

The problem is they do not want to play for our current coach. They wanted to play for the old coach and they won a conference championship. A lot of the transfers are our very best players and it is leaving the program in a shambles with no hope of being competitive all due to having an incompetent coach. The new athletic director whoever he is will have to immediately evaluate the football program and find a way to right the ship.

RE: TRANSFER PORTAL
Dr Sanders is an accomplished and very competent AD.

He headed up the 125 group that completely reorganized the AD dept. He recommended and spearheaded the return of football. He brought in competent staff. His latest hire, Coach Mock is a perfect example of Dr Sander hiring excellent staff and coaches. Dr Sander knows what he's doing and he's knows the problems that have beset the Athlectic Dept and is working everday to correct the problems. That is why Dr Noland asked him to assume the ADs postion.

The Athlectic Dept needs stability and someone who understands the challenges they are facing. Dr Sander understands those challenges. Paying out another 250k to a new AD won't solve the challenges.

ETSU has been and is at a crossroads. There have been several bad missteps made by the previous AD and his staff, that have resulted in diminished results for today and for the future. There has to be some serious decisions made about the future of ATHLETICS at ETSU.

You can't stand still, your either improving or falling behind. IMO, ETSU has fallen behind, while
many of our former conference members and similar institutions
have made entirely different decisions to improve.

Dr Sander also currently serves as Director for the Center for Global Sport Leadership and Executive in Residence – Assistant to the President. Wearing two hats can’t continue. And, hiring the right AD has got to be a huge challenge for Dr Noland in this new and accelerating evolving door world of college athletics. As for similar institutions — academically we have not fallen behind. We exceed several of those, and looking at our Schools and Colleges with their degree offerings at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels, we look much stronger than a number of those who have moved on past us in athletics. To me that shows a modern problem in higher education — the disconnect between academics and athletics, certainly in football and basketball. The gap has grown so wide that academics and degree offerings can no longer be used as a recruiting advantage. Otherwise, ETSU athletics would be ahead of a number of those who have surpassed us athletically — and I won’t go politically incorrect here and name any names. How to overcome the athletic minefield ETSU is in — I have no idea in this age of college athletics, and I’m sure Dr Noland and Dr Sander discuss this often as they try and hire a new AD.

RE: TRANSFER PORTAL
Portal filling up with quarterbacks. Believe this guy is headed to ND. Notice what WF coach said about the NIL, maybe more money there for a year than NFL!! So, the NIL is being used to buy good players with the Portal the road to the money. Who is putting up the NIL money to entice players to come to their place?

Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson said earlier this month that he would not blame his quarterback for leaving if NIL were to be involved.

“But the way this name, image and likeness market is working, in some cases with guys with eligibility left, they might have an opportunity to make more money by going to another school for a year then by going to the NFL,” Clawson said. “In that case, we couldn’t fault them. Whatever decision Sam makes, we support him. I think right now his intention is to go to the NFL, but when the bowl game is over, if there is some incredible offer for him to go to another school and get life-changing money, how could we fault him for that? It’s a good problem to have. He’s going to have many good options.”

I don't understand how academics wouldn't be a big part in a decision to transfer. Not so much in terms of quality of programs, as that is very difficult to measure, but more so in terms of the transferability of credits and the attainment of a marketable degree (e.g., not general studies).

Maybe once every decade we could have a player good enough to go to the NFL and a transfer to a school to increase visibility would help that. But most of our players even over the past two years are not that good, and playing at our level isn't going to prevent that opportunity. For example, Quay Holmes didn't get selected for the NFL because he wasn't fast enough and had other limitations. It had little or nothing to do with the fact that he played at ETSU- a school in which he was able to dominate the competition and showcase his talents. This same discussion applies to basketball and the NBA, with the exception of increased opportunities for overseas play.

So, taking the NFL off the table, why wouldn't academics play a huge part in the recruitment and retention of players? It seems to me that this would be even more important than the win/loss record of the football program.

If you don't see where the players are tranferring and understand the difference in FCS or lower divisions as opposed to FBS, then I can't help you.

NIL, better facilities, better competition, more exposure, Bowl games, ets

Education opportunities or curriculums, unfortunately, come in dead last in most recruit priorities. [/font]

The comparison that I was replying to was the schools who were once peers and have now moved up to the lower level FCS. With those lower level FCS schools, yes the bowl games (which neither the players or the fans really care about) are a difference. NIL might exist at that level, but not at the lucrative levels as the power 5 schools. Competition and facilities are better for sure. As for exposure, again that seems to be more for professional playing opportunities and I don’t feel that playing at that level helps your NFL position over the FCS.

Can ETSU do a better job leveraging its academics and multiple career path degree offerings in recruiting, especially with parents, in that players at our level will be finished playing organized football and mostly organized basketball after college? The school in our league that seems to consistently leverage its academics in athletic recruitment is Furman.,

Unless players play in the playoff bowls, no one cares.

20 year olds who have been groomed for athletics know little and some care little about academics. It’s all about playing time and playing FBS for them. Very little other matters.

We’ve all likely been there during those years. But, I swear, during my time most adults in charge actually cared that the athletes graduated with a meaningful degrees. Back then - majoring in Underwater Basket Weaving was the joke. Today, it looks like adults in charge are too often using these young athletes and playing on their youthful impulsiveness with this Portal and this NIL thing — and giving too much lip service to them finishing and graduating with a degree. Just saying.

I guess everyone has a different experience. First time my parents showed up on campus was graduation day. I am a first generation college student. My parents couldn’t help me at all.

Note the vague "mental health reasons".

So, the Transfer Portal along with NIL is a good thing for college athletics, the institutions involved, and higher education?

TRANSFER PORTAL
Tyler Riddell announced on the Sandos podcast that he will be returning to the team next year. Even bigger…. Will Huzzie is coming back too. Great to have them both back. He mentioned that the biggest reason for coming back was the offensive coaching and scheme changes coming up for this next season.

Do we know what the offensive schemes changes are? Do we have an offensive coordinator?

Tyler was afraid to say the changes that will be made to the scheme because he thought he may get in trouble. Quarles is supposed to be on in the next couple of episodes and describe it in more detail.

Yes that is what I gathered after I listened to the podcast. It sounds like we may have an OC. Hope he is good and can run a an offense. Last year was a joke on offense.

I say this only semi-jokingly..........but sounds like it's possible/(likely??) that Dick Sander may have been making some strong "offensive coordinator" suggestions. From his "bus" comments, he wasn't in the mood to be fooling around.
