Most of us have forgiven Cal. It was over a decade ago when he left.
Cal is on the hot seat at UK.
Lets bring him back.
03-puke If he couldn't make it at Ky. why in the L would we want him back at Memphis? You would probably want him to hire the sweat hog as assistant coach.
The tigers would certainly be the talk of the town then.

Not worked out at Kentucky? He is 375-107 at Kentucky
- 1 Sweet 16
- 3 Elite 8
- 2 Final Four
- 1 Championship loss
- 1 National Championship

Sign me up for that kind of not being able to make it...
07-coffee3 Since he is doing so wonderful at KY then why is he on the hot seat ??

There is not point in attempting to have a conversation with someone who is completely unwilling to objectively look at facts.

Kentucky fans believe they should win the title every year or they want their coach fired. Cal has basically been on the "hot seat" every year since he won the NC for them.

In the 15 year period between 2006 - 2020, counting 2020, when the season was cancelled and they were ranked #7 in the country, Cal went to the Sweet 16 or better every year in 13 of them.

1 - National Championship
5 - Final Four
6 - Elite 8
2 - Sweet 16
13 - NCAA Appearances

What did we have before Cal? I think 3 Final Fours, if you count the NIT in 1957, 1 Elite 8 and 4 Sweet 16's. BUT...Cal sucks. Some of our fans are psychos.

Having said that, as the years pile up from WWW not being the only game in town, and everyone being in on the best recruits, and many of them not playing college, time has caught up to Cal. He is clearly trending down.

It is certainly possible he is trending down. It is also a little tough to tell since COVID hit and disrupted the world for two years. This year is certainly not a good indication of the future. I assume unless he leaves on his own this year he will get at least one more at Kentucky to get it turned back around.

He hasn't won a NCAA Tournament game in over 1,000 days.

1,000 days? They were ranked #7 in the country when the season was cancelled March 2020.

Cal will never set foot on the Memphis campus again. He got away with a lot of sh#t while he was here. Both personally and professionally. He's not dredging that back up again.

Definitely fair to say that. Sign me up for those numbers, too. But I think it's more of what should have or could have been with his time at UK. I think the vast majority of college hoops fans would agree that with the talent pool he's amassed over his tenure there it is reasonable to say to have "only" one natty is a bit of an underachievement. I would bet even Cal would agree with that.

You let Cal wander int FedEx Forum during a Memphis Tiger game...and I guarandamntee you 'most' of the crowd would boo his azz.
Quite a few people have not forgiven him, and it isn't a question of maturity or anything of the sort.
I have the right not to cheer for the man. No man or woman has the right to tell me how to be a Memphis Tiger fan. I can cheer or boo anyone I fricking like. I've been a fan for 50 years now...and yes there are people older than me here in our forum who have been fans longer...but they can't tell me either...nor would I try to tell them how to 'be a real fan'.
He denigrated us at damn near every turn. Played us for fools while he was coaching our team...pretending he was going to run off to NC State...then leak the news he was talking to NC State thru outside sources to get the Memphis admin to pay his staff more money.
The really stupid thing about that is...it wasn't necessary. Memphis would have paid him that and then some.
We all know the rest. The Missouri NCAA game, taking the UK job while still coaching the Tigers in the Missouri game, pretending he was 'soul searching and thinking about whether to accept the UK job or not...meanwhile his staff was calling all the recruits recruited on Memphis' dime and telling them to follow the staff to UK. Blowing thru his $50,000? clothing allotment for the year...big shopping spree...and then leaving .
When he got to UK...he was complaining how Memphis 'made him sell tickets'...and complained about how he sat waiting for UK to call him years earlier...when they ended up hiring Billy Gillespie. How Memphis wasn't at 'the big kid's table' etc etc etc.

Maybe you can forgive all of that.
Maybe you can also forgive that he was rumored to be cheating on his wife at the apts on Mud Island.
If so, I'll admit, you are a more compassionate individual than I...more forgiving etc etc.
Because for me...that is way too frigging much to forgive.

the thing is...at UK that is a letdown. With the talent they gave had...they should have more.
They don't celebrate hanging Elite Eight or Final Four banners there...that's old hat for them.
He could have accomplished the same thing at Memphis...and been damn near a deity. At UK...you win a title...okay...big accomplishment...but still...that has been done.
Unless they get a coach who can overtake UCLA for the most titles...they will never be happy.
Every year, UK fans get real nervous if/when UCLA makes a deep tourney run. Because the number of titles is the ultimate prize for them.
Its the only thing keeping them from really being able to say that they are the greatest college basketball program of all time.

And better. Pitino wins. He CAN coach!

People forget how similar Penny and Cal are. Great recruiters. Great marketers for the program. The knock on both is their ability to influence the game from the sidelines.

Edit: I'm not looking to run Penny out. I don't typically want a coach with baggage. Pitino's skills simply out-weigh his baggage. He coaches at the highest level. And his is issues include having an affair and operating the same as ever other NCAA coach - using shoe company to lure players. Other coaches have survived that "indictment."

Pitino has said that Iona is his last coaching stop.
Wont go to another program..so that idea is out.

Anyone who still actually believes this is brain dead.

Been called worse.

National Championship game year the summer prior myself, wife and another couple had just walked into Pearls Oyster House downtown. Cal was at the far end of the bar all by himself, our wives went to our table w the Hostess my friend who also knows Cal and I went to chat with him a bit and both wondered why on a Friday night during the summer was he at a bar downtown at around 8:30 pm or so...I said what in the world are you doing here...he said with a grin on his face " waiting for a friend to get home"...my friend who knew cal way better than me said it was his girlfriend who lives on Mud Island when we got back to our table.

True story.

Calipari is washed up as a coach. He’s been in cruise mode ever since he got the stupid lifetime contract with the huge buyout. He ain’t going anywhere else and will be at UK until he permanently retires. Move along.
