We're matched with UAB as a permanent opponent in AAC play.

So as long as we remain in the AAC let's do this game right.

Permanently move the game to Saturday at 2:00 pm on Thanksgiving weekend.

Revive the Battle For The Bones BBQ Cook-off.

Fans spend Thanksgiving at home with family.

Friday morning the visiting fans load up and head down 78/22.

Arrive at the cook-off location, set up, and start cooking.

At noon on game day they do judging and announce the winners at halftime.

RE: Annual Rival
Thing is...you're competing against the NFL...who will have 3 games on that day.
This season...the Egg Bowl was also played on tv on Thanksgiving.
Memphis/UAB would be special for Tiger fans...but by and large, our brand isn't good enough to get many more eyeballs outside of Memphis or UAB fans that day.

At one time I thumbed my nose at UAB but like it or it’s the closest school to us in makeup and demographic. And we are both stuck where we are because of the SEC

Them and Southern Miss. The Black and Blue Bowl was always fun to go to.

Not me. I went to 7? straight games where they beat us in football. Darrell Hackney was the QB for every loss somehow. Is he still QB there?

Always enjoyed UAB, but if you could get a good TV deal , do at 2p on that Friday so it stands out.

Yeah he is. He'll be a Sophomore in the fall.

Anyways...Where does the OP get the list of "permanent opponents"?
I somehow missed that.

I don't about permanent but we are scheduled to play them every year for the next 4 seasons.

Great rivalry ... And their fans care about football AND basketball. Along with Tulane ... I'm looking forward to AAC games.

Try reading the AAC article when they announced the rotating schedule.

They announced a four-year rotation plan where every team plays every other team home and home.

Each school is paired with another school that is not rotating and will play every year.

We're paired with UAB.

The top 2 schools play in the conference title game, with no divisions.

Always enjoyed UAB, but if you could get a good TV deal , do at 2p on that Friday so it stands out.

TV is not the focal point.

It's about restoring what was starting to become a tradition between the schools.

The annual BBQ cooking contest.

While allowing the competitors to have proper time to set up and do their cooking in time for judging and winners announcement while at the time being able to play the game in the afternoon.

If you do it on a regular week then visiting competitors will have to wait till they get off work on Friday before making the trip.

With travel time and set up it would be between 9-10 pm before they could actually start cooking.

Whereas for many Thanksgiving is a long weekend.

Giving visiting competitors time to make the drive on Friday and arrive around noon allows them plenty of prep time before the start of the competition.

Annual traditions add to a rivalry
