He was reportedly in a walking boot before the holidays, correct?

I'm also not sure how many games can be played to still qualify for a redshirt.

That is correct.

RE: MBB today, WBB tomorrow
I know this team struggles and we see a lot of things that are sloppy and in need of fixing. We also know how hard of an ooc schedule the team played.

With that said, I was thinking about a game played back in the middle of November really early in the season in Evanston and we (myself included) were mostly down about getting beat by Northwestern the way they did. I looked up the thread and boy oh boy are them some pretty strong predictions there.

Not naming names but... Northwestern doesn't seem to be on their way to finishing last in the Big 10. They just beat Illinois by 13 tonight and are currently 11-3 on the season and 2-1 in the B1G with wins over both Illinois and Michigan State. They're 3 losses are to Ohio State (10-3), Pittsburgh (11-4), and Auburn (11-3).

So, maybe this game wasn't as telling and borderline embarrassing as many of us thought it was.

Oh and...I don't think Eastern Michigan is going to win the MAC (regular season...when it comes to tournaments, almost anything can happen).

Anyway...it's a long season and we still have a long way to go!

Go Huskie Cagers!!!!

I don’t know anyone that said EMU would win the MAC. I know people felt there big recruit would be great and I think he’s been very good. NIU was bad at Northwestern and so was Northwestern. Illinois is struggling now and I still think Northwestern stinks and will finish at the bottom of the Bigten. NIU got beat worse at Akron then at Gonzaga so what does that mean about those 3 teams?

It (EMU winning the MAC) was said in that NIU vs NW thread (I was one of the guilty parties 03-lmfao...but not the only one!!!).

Anyway, yeah, it was definitely said. You had a pretty good one in there as well in regards to NW.

At a certain point losses stop being embarrassing and become just another loss. Are we there yet?
Case in point: we are not embarrassed by our first MAC game 25 point blowout loss to the ZIPS. At least we have a good team name and not called the ZIPS! So we have that going for us!
At a certain point we don't even bother making predictions on NIU and instead make predictions and argue about NU and EMU. We are there.
How many MAC wins will NIU get this season? 3 or 4? We will beat EMU and WMU once. We will pull off a couple of surprise wins. Hope upon hope, we pull off a surprise win against CMU next Tuesday (our first MAC home game). That would give us misguided hope for the rest of the MAC season!
Go huskies.

Nothing disappoints or upsets me anymore. After many years of watching and attending Huskie games, I expect the losses. Many of the games I attend are real clunkers. But, I enjoy visiting and chatting with fans in my section. A rare win is a pleasant surprise. But, losses don't upset me because I expect them.

Positives from ZIPS game.
We held traitor Trent to 3 points. What a loser! Spend 4 years playing for NIU and then go to another MAC team!!! Not an ounce of loyalty. At least Maric had the decency to go to DePaul. Break a leg, Trent.
Speaking of traitors, Tyler bounces from MAC team to MAC team as his PPG gets lower and lower. 15.5 - NIU, 11.6 - BGU, 8.4 - TOL. Karma!
We did play Akron straight up in the 1st half with numerous leads and only down by 2 at half. ZIPS woke up in the 2nd half!
Nutter was our high scorer with 11 points (not necessarily a positive - just stop Williams(4-17) and Coit (0-5) and you will beat NIU)!

I find myself more often than I should, looking up Buffalo's stats to check on Yazid Powell. He committed to NIU before backing out and going to Buffalo. He'd be a big benefit to our club right now. For Buffalo, Powell is starting and averaging 12.7 ppg. I thought he'd shoot way better from 3PT but that's about the only thing holding him back right now.

Why would anyone good want to stay at NIU or come to NIU. We are in serious trouble! I don’t believe Burno can make a winner out of NIU not because he’s a bad coach but because NIU is a bad place for good players to go to or stay at. Monty had enough talent here over his time but he apparently wasn’t a good coach which I personally don’t believe. He was able to get players to play defense hard and well so he could coach some. For whatever reason NIU is just a crappy basketball program all around! Now with it being so easy to transfer what chance does Burno have of keeping or getting talent to come or stay here. At our level guys want to play in march madness and they know there is literally zero chance that happens for them if they’re at NIU so yes Powell de committed from NIU and Hankerson and Cochran left.

There are a lot worse places than NIU/DeKalb and not everyone can play for Toledo.

BigRed, why do you think it’s been so hard to win at NIU in mens or womens basketball? The people that have coached all new the game of basketball front wards and backwards.

It's something I think about more than I probably should.

So, I'll give it a stab as to what my thoughts are (btw, my previous comment was total jest and just meant to be silly). Anyway, I'll just go back to the Patton era as that's really when I started getting good tv/streaming coverage to watch most games.

So, who was the best coach? Patton, Montgomery or Burno? I honestly don't know. It's probably fair to say they are pretty even with strengths and weakness and it all kind of balances out.

At that point, it flips to recruiting and who is the better recruiter. Well, I feel confident in saying Patton was the worst recruiter and it was of his own doing. He clearly could attract good players but whether it was stubbornness or his own ego, he alienated coaches and burned bridges (and seemed to hold grudges) leading to his own demise.

So, Monty or Burno for best recruiter. This is hard to say because Monty's resume is 5x longer than Burno's but it can't be ignored that Burno had to or chose to completely dismantle Montgomery's last team. And, after German left, those teams were really bad.

But Burno only has 2 recruiting classes and one of them didn't really have a senior season to play basketball for a coach to watch and/or evaluate. So that has to be factored in to the equation.

With that said, Montgomery seemed to recruit heavily from 3 distinct areas. #1 was southeast Michigan. #2 was Milwaukee. And #3 was the Chicago suburbs (and this was a more recent development and one that he targeted to do better in).

Burno on the other hand recruits from everywhere and globally. That says something about the connections (a popular topic around here lately) or the resources he has to tap into.

Montgomery had some good recruiting classes but most of them faltered for one reason or another and possibly his best class was undone by discipline issues. The problem with this is, you know there are going to be issues at times. These guys are not going to all be angels. But as is the life of a mid-major (and NIU is probably more of a mid-mid-major), mistakes get magnified and are much harder to overcome and can set a program back.

Why did I go into all of that? Because I think the answer is multi-layered and hard to answer. Why can't NIU succeed? Part of it is probably poor selection of coaches. Some of that is luck based. Take, for example, Porter Moser. He was fine at both Little Rock and Illinois State but he became almost a legend at Loyola (and probably shouldn't have left for Oklahoma...but I digress). Who could have predicted Moser would have been a national name when he was under .500 at ISU? Sometimes you get lucky with a guy and it just pops.

NIU hasn't had that happen. Heck, most teams don't.

IMO, Monty was a good hire coming off of Patton and Burno was a good hire coming off of Monty.

But I will say, Burno has a harder job of succeeding than any of his predecessors and that is because of the transfer portal and NIL money. And that, imo, makes it even harder for a cash-strapped school like NIU to succeed.

But, I'd rather be a fan of NIU in the MAC than some school in the MEAC or the SWAC or the Big West. Heck, even the Ohio Valley is looking pretty bleak right now. Those are truly low-mid-major programs and conferences.

Anyway...long story short...I don't know. It's probably a combination of bad luck, lack of focus for way too many years and an inability to carve out an identity in Big Ten country and just a little too far from Chicago to actually matter (not that UIC is making waves from within the city).

Assume this was one that slipped through the cracks between Monty and Burno, but an example of an overlooked and underrated prospect from our backyard: https://www.yahoo.com/news/former-honone...05974.html

Meh...

He wasn't underrated. He was perfectly rated. Spent 3 years at St. Cloud State and had a nice little career there but his stats at EIU aren't exactly eye popping.

If anyone missed on him it was ISU being that he played high school at Bloomington HS.

He's basically Zarique Nutter but not as tall and slightly to moderately worse.

EIU coach wasn’t wasting time. Brought in 9 new players last season. Wish that was the route burno went in. Just flip the entire roster with guys you went after.
