RE: Bryant Vincent being targeted for OC by…
ON3 is reporting that UCF is expected to hire Darin Hinshaw as OC.
Remember, he was our OC this year. I always wondered how our season would have been if he called the plays instead of BV.

Maybe Hinshaw will appreciate a coach who understands letting an OC run the offense.

Since we're talking about parting shots, he sure didn't mind letting it be known that his way won games and a championship.
"It's simple as this – complementary football wins games," Vincent said. "I know everybody loves to see the ball thrown every single snap. But, at the end of the day, it's the winning that's important. Complementary football at UAB won a lot of games. It's won three (Conference USA) West championships, two conference championships and three bowl wins."
Feel like the man finally had a medium to get some things off his chest. Go for him.
Now go complementary NM some wins.

UCF will run Gus Malzahn's offense.

Nobody cares about “complimentary football”. If you win every game 42-10 by running for 300 yards, nobody cares. A 79 yard td run is just as good as an equivalent pass in my book. It’s the simple fact that complimentary football killed us when we fell behind that most had an issues with. Or that it had us hanging on for dear life at the end of a game.
His way won 7 games and went 4-4 in CUSA in a year where we were preseason top 3 at worst. He played a part in the Bill Clark era, but at the end of the day those weren’t his teams.

You *have* to care about it to some degree. One of the great weaknesses of the Air Raid (and the Run n' Shoot before it) is that while it puts up lots of yards and points, it leaves your defense on the field to the point of exhaustion. You get the ball back and either punt or score in two or three minutes and your defense is right back on the field.
I'm not advocating for running out of the I or old school SEC style ball control football, but I certainly saw the influence of that school of thought on how Bill Clark wanted to win games. If your offense leans too far in that direction it becomes a much harder lift to score quickly when you fall behind when your game plan calls for six to eight minute clock chewing drives. You can't count on that off tackle run popping for twenty or thirty yards.

RE: Bryant Vincent being targeted for OC by…
It does say something that Vincent's next job is to be the OC under a coach in his first HC job at a school that hasn't had a winning season since 2016.
And his OC this year's next job is to be the OC under a HC that has a national reputation at a program that hasn't had a losing season since 2016.
I get Hinshaw's connection to UCF and Malzahn, but it's still quite interesting optics.

It doesn’t really say anything more than it was one of the few jobs available at the time he was trying to get hired. He is lucky to have gotten that one. The UCF OC won’t call the plays, so BV wasn’t going to go there unless it was the only job left.

BV wasn't going to go there because he didn't get asked to.

We are saying very similar things. I was never in the camp of get this offense out of here completely. When it worked it was great. When it didn’t, we had no secondary option. I’m all about a balanced offense at any level, unless you can just run your opponents off the field.

You know this for a fact?
Give than there's no way somebody voluntarily chooses New Mexico as their next football job over UCF when it would be the same position? Yes, I'm pretty sure it is a fact.
I'll put it this way...Vincent's strategic mind would be even less than I thought if he took a job at a bottom-feeder Mountain West that barely breaks even over a Big 12 job at a program that brings in millions of profit and sells out their season tickets.
I guess you could ask Dudley to reach out to UCF to confirm if you want something more concrete. Maybe Bobby Petrino should reach out to Vincent to thank him for leaving the Texas A&M job open too.

BV was not and never was going be hired by Gus.
BV didn’t have many options because there are not many openings. He probably could have done better than UNM earlier in the cycle but you are not seriously suggesting A&M would have considered him, are you? Petrino may be a lot of things that wrecked his career but no one ever suggested he wasn’t one of the best play callers of his era.

RE: Bryant Vincent being targeted for OC by…
My major complaints about BV wasn’t his offensive philosophy… it was more of the play calling and predictability. That was compounded when he became HC, evident by his use of timeouts, and the fact it was clear the offense was BV’s all along, not due to the play calling being filtered or veto’d through Clark. I’ve said it numerous times, I didn’t want him as an OC the past several years, much less the head coach.

BV didn’t have many options because there are not many openings.
There were a lot of Offensive Coordinator openings this season:
Arizona State
Auburn
Boise State
California
Charlotte
Cincinnati
Coastal Carolina
Colorado
FAU
Georgia Tech
Kent State
Kentucky
Liberty
Louisville
Mississippi State
Navy
Nebraska
North Carolina
NC State
North Texas
Oregon
Purdue
Rutgers
South Carolina
Stanford
Syracuse
Tennessee
Texas State
Tulsa
UAB
UCF
UNLV
USF
UTSA
Washington State
WKU
Western Michigan
West Virginia
Wisconsin
And he ended up at #130th out of #131 football programs in the country. Come on, man.

Can we focus on our coaches now? How do we stack up now that most of the coaching positions are filled?

That's not the subject of this thread. There are other threads for that discussion.
