Just to ease your worry...no, the MAC didn't get comparatively better. The MAC is still the bottom conference in FBS and the West was the worser of the two divisions in the worst conference.

Don't let a few exhibition games cloud your perception.

Because if these games are predictive or telling of anything, then that means New Mexico State can be competitive in the MAC and that's not a good sign.

Yet, New Mexico State was invited to join Conference USA and no one from the MAC got an invite.

Offers are generally not made public until negotiations behind the scenes confirm that an offer will be accepted.

Also almost always transfers to a new conference are based on money. More money for the conference and more money for the schools. The new CUSA media contract will net the schools only about $700,000 each. Less than the MAC contract today while also increasing travel expenses. It also requires most of their October games to be played during the week. Would any MAC school want to give up October Saturday games to get November Saturday games back?

None of this proves anything about strength of conferences on the field but I believe based on guaranteed revenue and membership stability I am glad NIU is in the MAC and not CUSA.

All correct.

Let's also not forget that C-USA was desperately looking for new members or they were seriously looking at becoming extinct.

Also, two C-USA members asked to join the MAC and would have been admitted if MTSU could have come up with the money to get out of C-USA, but they balked at the buy out/exit fee and then the MAC rejected both schools for some reason (I'm guessing it was an invite to both on not just one to keep the conference at an even number...which is kind of understandable).

Nevertheless, New Mexico State and getting invited into C-USA has absolutely nothing with them not being invited into the MAC. C-USA was trying to save it's existence where the MAC wasn't and suggesting otherwise is ridiculous.

But does the CUSA play games on Saturday?

How much less is the CUSA contract paying? And how many more fans show up on Saturdays as opposed of Wednesday nights?

According to wikipedia:

Quote:In 2016, C-USA began a long-term television contract with lead partners ESPN and CBS Sports Network, with ESPN carrying 5 football games and the football championship game; and CBSSN carrying 6 football games, 5 basketball games, and both the men's and women's basketball championship games. C-USA also renewed and expanded its partnership with American Sports Network; owned and operated by Sinclair Broadcast Group, ASN will carry between 15 and 30 football games; between 13 and 55 men's basketball games; and between 2 and 5 women's basketball games. ASN will also carry 10 events in other C-USA sports.

The conference also entered into a contract with beIN Sports for 10 football games (marking the first domestic American football rights the network has ever acquired, and the first broadcast rights deal it had ever entered into with a college conference), 10 men's and 10 women's basketball games, 12 baseball and 12 softball games, 10 men's and 10 women's soccer games (excluding conference men's soccer games at Kentucky and South Carolina, covered by their primary conference's contract), and 10 women's volleyball games.

The total values of the 2016 contracts are notably lower than those of the previous contracts (which included Fox Sports).

Men's soccer associate members Kentucky and South Carolina have an agreement with their primary conference for other sports to carry all home matches online through the SEC Network service, including all Conference USA conference matches. ESPN and the SEC Network will have first rights to all C-USA home men's soccer matches featuring both schools.

In 2017 American Sports Network and Campus Insiders merged creating Stadium. Stadium's C-USA content will be available to stream on Twitter and Pluto TV. In 2017 Stadium completed a deal with Facebook to exclusively stream some C-USA football games. In 2017 C-USA entered an agreement with the streaming subscription service FloSports to stream three football games.

In 2016 C-USA partnered with SIDEARM Sports to create a subscription based streaming service named CUSA.tv. In a statement C-USA Commissioner Judy MacLeod said, "Thanks to our partnership with SIDEARM Sports, this new site showcases a clean modern look with easy access to information and we are proud to offer live content and original feature stories through our CUSA.tv."Various sports including football, basketball, and baseball will exclusively air on CUSA.tv when they are not picked up by other networks.

Sounds like a mis-mash of networks and streaming platforms consisting of ESPN, CBSSN, ASN, Facebook, Twitter, BeIN, and something called CUSA.tv (subscription streaming service with ORIGINAL CONTENT!!!!).

According to this article (https://www.yahoo.com/video/college-foot...0Sports.):

Quote:Conference USA’s current deal with ESPN, CBS Sports Network, NFL Network, Facebook and Stadium will expire next year. It’s worth around $5.5 million per year.

Quote:The Mid-American Conference’s deal also ends in 2023. It’s worth about $8 million per year with ESPN and CBS Sports.

Considering their deal expires next year (with which entity, I'm not sure), it's assumed they need to re-negotiate a deal and with the conference losing UAB (Birmingham, AL), FAU (Boca Raton, FL), Charlotte, North Texas (Denton, TX...part of the Dallas,Ft. Worth/Arlington market), Rice (Houston), UTSA (San Antonio) and are replacing those teams with Jacksonville State (Jacksonville, AL...about half way between Birmingham and Atlanta but not part of either market), Liberty (Lynchburg, VA...way out in central VA by itself but probably has a strong alumni draw), New Mexico State (Las Cruces, NM...not far from El Paso but obviously not UTEP), Sam Houston (Huntsville, TX...about an hour and a half north of Houston and fairly close to College Station), and Kennesaw State (Kennesaw, GA...in the Atlanta market)...I can't say they increased their leverage in regards to eyes on the product.

They aren't in a healthy spot to get more money.

edit: but yeah..I supposed they do play on Saturday

RE: MAC Bowl Games
CUSA has already signed a new media rights deal. As I stated earlier it will net about $700,000 per school annually. They will play October games midweek. CBS Sports Network will be primary and ESPN secondary. They have eliminated all the other streaming services to make finding their games simpler which was a big complaint of their fans under the previous contract. They will play Saturday games in September and November.

MAC current contract nets schools approximately $900,000 per school.

Going to sit down and watch Ohio's bowl game tomorrow, bummer no bowl for NIU this year, but an OHIO win is a merit badge for the MAC (4-2 bowl season), gives me a placebo sensation of having some skin in the 2023 post season I guess.

RE: MAC Bowl Games
I think the Barstool Arizona Bowl is my new favorite MAC bowl game. What a great broadcast. So much better than the tired ESPN broadcast you get for most MAC games. I hope this game flourishes with Barstool as a partner. I remember when this game was on CBS Sports years ago and the Barstool broadcast was so much better.

After watching a couple of the MAC bowl games it totally blows seeing NIU sit at home during the postseason for a third time in four seasons. It has been 11 years since NIU has won a bowl and now NIU cannot even qualify for a game. If Hammock cannot get NIU back to a bowl game next season then NIU needs a new head football coach.

Well, at least it’s a plus that NIU did not lose a bowl game this year!

I assume you are referring to TCU?

They have a $2.5 billion endowment. If they never played another football game, would not make a difference.

Georgia is actually poorer, about $1.8 billion

That's not my phrase, that's Ohio State's former President's phrase.

My bad. What a pompous ass. But then again, I guess we aren't the little sisters of the poor then. Perhaps we should should say we are and ask for more money next trip.
