Kent State @ New Mexico State
The Golden Flashes head to the Don Haskins Center in El Paso Texas to take on the NMSU Aggies. The contest is set to tip at 7:30.
New Mexico State is 6-4 on the season and coming off a 95-53 over Northern New Mexico. From what I can tell the Aggies best wins are over Duquense and UTEP with the "best loss" being to St. Mary's.
The winner of tonight's game will take on the winner of North Carolina A&T and UTEP tomorrow evening. Obviously, the two losers will also play. This would be a nice a "tournament" to win heading into conference play. Its gotta start tonight vs. the Aggies. I hope KSU packed their defense.
Go Flashes!

Neither New Mexico State nor UTEP (known as Texas Western when they historically won the national championship in 1966 under Don Haskins) are slam dunks, but still, I will be disappointed if the Flashes don't win the tournament.

Remember when Xavier Pinson was committed to Kent like 10 years ago?

Squandered a lot of chances to put this team away. Now we gotta finish a tight one.

NM State's a pretty tough team. Physical, like Kent and Pinson is a darn good player. Glad to get the W for the Kent Golden State Flashes.

I imagine they'll play UTEP. UTEP has won 7 of their last 9, but one loss was by 25 to New Mexico State.

That was a good win for the Flashes. I think NM state was 86 in the net coming into tonight.

Gonna need another big to step up. When Hornbeak went out Thomas and Davis were the "bigs" and we couldn't get a defensive board. Need Payton, Gillespie, or Odisupe to get to the point the coaches feel confident playing them in crunch time.

Good "bigs" are great to have, for lots of reasons. But for defensive rebounding positioning and technique are as important as height. In the 2001/2002 season we had Gerwig and Edwards, but most of the time in crunch time Huffman, Mitchell, Shaw, Thomas and Gates were the five on the floor and I'm pretty sure that none were taller than 6'4", no matter what the program said. But I agree that some or all of those you mentioned need to up their game. Stan Heath was a stickler for rebounding. Not a knock on Sendy, but the rebounding has to get better.

Hornbeak fouled out with about 8 minutes left.

I think part of the problem on the boards is the aggressive D that Kent plays where there are a lot of double teams at the top of the key which pulls the 'big' out of position for the defensive rebound. Also, I think NM State had some good rebounders (Mohammed?).
