(12-07-2022 12:03 PM)The Answer UAB Wrote:  I'll be honest - I'm worried about the coaching staff hires. I'm not jumping off the ledge, but if this wasn't some super charismatic and well known guy we chose as our HC who is calming our fears, we'd all be losing our minds over how little experience everyone has at the college level. This is basically an entire coaching staff with little to no real coaching experience at the D1 level. This hire definitely had the potential to crash and burn, and the coaching staff decisions only make that a bigger possibility to me. I'm not saying I think that will happen, and I am all on board with giving Coach Dilf a fair shot/all the support. However, these hires are quite alarming on the surface.

I'm still cautiously optimistic, and Coach Dilf certainly talks the talk, but the lack of experience definitely worries me.

I am drinking the Kool Aid with you guys, and I like what I've seen and heard from Coach Dilf so far.. But be objective.. If this was Charlotte that made this hire, and the coach had an entire coaching staff with minimal D1 coaching experience - we'd probably be making fun of them for it and saying they're going to crash and burn. People are really smitten with Coach Dilf, and I think that is clouding some folks judgement.

Excellent post and I completely agree. Despite my vocal skepticism, im a fan of TD and I believe he can be successful here but I'm trying to be objective. What Answers says is 100 percent true. If this wasnt TD or if this was another school making this hire, most of us would either have serious reservations about it or we would be mocking it. My initial thought when we hired TD was, let's see what kind of staff he brings in. I was hoping he would bring in some guys who have been around the D1 level for awhile and coached in some high level positions. He's basically done the opposite of that and it's concerning. I have no issue with him brining in his buddy from LU, but as the DC? So TD says he's one of the best coaches he's ever been around, ok so what does he know about coaching in college? There's a lot more that goes into coaching at the college level than coaching at the HS level. Same with going from college to the NFL, that's why so many fail. I'll remain hopeful but none of these hires has eased my concern or skepticism one bit.

UAB HC Trent Dilfer said on the McElroy and Cubelic show that his hire as the program's defensive coordinator, Sione Ta'ufo'ou is the "finest football coach I've ever been around in my life."

I agree that the staff hiring he's done so far (that all have little/no college experience) is concerning. But Dilfer knows way more about football than any of us so I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt right now.

That's great...but his LinkedIn literally says:

Sounds like I could be DC then.

I'm being a little facetious but the DC hire has sounded some alarm bells for me when I've been all in up to this point. Don't get me wrong, I want all of these guys on staff...I just don't like some of the positions they are filling.

He said the offensive line coach and strength coach are the two most important hires.

We can be as critical as we want to be about TD’s hires, but we don’t know crap compared to him. Let him do his thing and watch the success unfold.

Same here. It’s a little odd, and out of the ordinary, but his hire was that to begin with . I expected this hire to be boom or bust, and his staffing decisions are doing nothing to sway my opinion there. I think we’ll have some bumps this first year, but by year 2 we will know exactly what we have.

I mean I get it...I'm down with that.

As somebody that's taken over programs (not football), I get that sometimes you want to bring people in that don't have as much experience so that they aren't tainted by old-ways of thinking. If TD trusts them, they get the benefit of the doubt from me.

I expect Trent Dilfer to hold his staff to higher accountability than Bill Clark did. So if they don't work out, I hope he cuts quick and fills the gap.

Instead of allowing his friends to stay on staff way after they've hit their ceiling (and eventually handing them the Interim coaching title on your way out).

That's probably true demivee. I do think the philosophy with Sione is interesting...being a DC by knowing offenses inside and out and preparing for them. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous about reshuffling the core competency of our team.

From an offense perspective, this unit is going to be dynamic. He's talking about 19 different personnel groupings...did we even have 5 last year? I believe Skull will stay. If Debo grades out as needing more time to work on his skill, will he come back?

Actually I think it's the guy that works the sporting goods aisle at his local Wal Mart. If TD trusts him, then I'm all in!

Give these guys a chance. They may be great, they may suck. I can tell you bashing something we haven't seen in a public forum probably isn't the best idea. Not saying don't be concerned, i am saying just give them a chance. Put the pitchfork back in the closet until we know we need it, lol

Completely understandable to have a healthy dose of “show me” about some of these hires based on experience levels but I think TD has done his homework on them and knows they are legit ready and have been prepared for it by great coaches.

I am really excited about some fresh energy they will bring.
