The Arizona Bowl tweeted out today that their "final eight" are: Eastern, BG, Ohio, Toledo, Boise State, Fresno State, San Jose State, and Wyoming.

Now, the Arizona Bowl is one with a direct MAC tie-in. The MAC currently has five bowl eligible teams and one of them (Miami-OH) have already accepted a bid to the Bahamas Bowl....so of course the other four MAC school would be finalist.

So that tweet from the Arizona Bowl basically means nothing, however it seems like multiple posters have been hearing the same thing about Arizona being the spot.
Weatherbe said on last week's podcast that ESPN gets the first choice of a Mac School for one of the ESPN bowls. Then Barstool (Arizona) gets the next choice. Not sure what the plan is after that. I would guess that ESPN will take Ohio or Toledo with the first choice. Not sure what bowl game they would put them in though. Second choice would be one of the other three or four Mac schools.

I'll take a wild guess that the survey Eastern did had the Quick Lane as the most preferred game for Eastern fans.

My prediction is Eastern goes to the Quick Lane against either Connecticut or Rice.

Has anyone seen anything on ESPN's regular seaaon MACtion viewership ratings? Gotta believe those numbers will come into play in determining who gets the better bowls.

I only have the number of viewers for ESPN games
EASTERN MICHIGAN vs KENT STATE had 399k viewers

Which ranked above these week 12 games:

INDIANA vs MICHIGAN STATE - 369K
OHIO vs BALL STATE - 250K
SDSU vs NEW MEXICO - 210K
NORTHWESTERN vs PURDUE - 209K
WESTERN MICHIGAN vs CENTRAL MICHIGAN - 179K
SAN JOSE STATE vs UTAH STATE - 128K
NEW MEXICO vs STATE MISSOURI - 63k

I have yet to get a number back on these week 12 games but I was told it was below Eastern vs Kent State:

HARVARD vs YALE
CINCINNATI vs TEMPLE
SOUTH ALABAMA vs SOUTHERN MISS
COLORADO STATE vs AIR FORCE
BOWLING GREEN vs TOLEDO

This is a JOKE:

Did the B1G decided to add a Research I school in the Southwest, Rice, while I was 'out to lunch.' 03-lmfao

BTW, I believe Rice has the academic heft of a B1G school. There are a LOT of academic heavies which are not athletic heavies in FBS.

Thinking Rice, Tulane, etc. which are not in the power conferences but are academically like many P5 schools.

And then there are schools like Vandy, Rutgers, etc. which are academically excellent but struggle against athletic powerhouses.

Rice is in because there wouldn't be enough Big Ten teams.

I honestly don't care who we play as long as we beat them. Give me Rice, a Big Ten school, or anything in-between. I selfishly would like another QL bowl but where ever we go we MUST win.

Sounds like a 5-7 team or two will be needed to fill all the bowl slots and they use the Acedemic Performance Report to determine the pecking order. The Buffalo game is a factor in this too. Still a possibility that MSU may go bowling.

It's a very confusing mess.

I don't think MSU has a chance. This is from yesterday:

Quote:With less than a week until bowl bids are officially announced, it’s still unknown how many teams are bowl eligible.

We interrupt our weekly bowl projections for breaking news: Action Network is reporting Middle Tennessee and San Diego State are headed to the Hawaii Bowl … now back to the bowl projections.

It’s unknown how many teams are eligible because Buffalo (5-6) plays Akron in a Friday game rescheduled because of weather. It’s simple for Buffalo — win, and the Bulls are in as the 80th bowl-eligible team.

If Buffalo wins, there will be two five-win teams needed to fill the final two spots. An Akron win means three five-win teams will be needed to fill the 82 spots.

The order of the five-win teams is based on the Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. Rice had the highest APR score of the five-win teams, followed by UNLV and Auburn. Regardless of the Buffalo-Akron result, Rice is guaranteed a bowl. UNLV has the next highest APR, followed by Auburn.

If Buffalo loses, then UNLV and Auburn would be next in line to receive bowl bids.

However, New Mexico State athletic director Mario Moccia told Action Network the school filed an appeal today with the NCAA Football Oversight Committee, seeking a waiver that would allow 5-6 NMSU to play in a bowl.

New Mexico State is pursuing a waiver because the Aggies were not able to play their full 12-game schedule because of tragic circumstances, involving the death of a San Jose State player and subsequent cancelation of the NMSU-SJSU game.

New Mexico State tried unsuccessfully to find another FBS opponent. Here’s more about New Mexico State’s appeal efforts.

If the NCAA rules in New Mexico State’s favor, the Aggies would be selected before Rice, UNLV and Auburn. No matter if New Mexico State receives a waiver or not, Rice will still be bowl bound. For UNLV and Auburn, they will have to wait to see (a) if Buffalo wins, and (b) if New Mexico State’s appeal is successful.

Regarding my bowl projections this week, I’m projecting Buffalo to become the 80th bowl-eligible team, leaving spots for two five-win teams. Until the NCAA rules on New Mexico State’s appeal, I’m putting Rice and UNLV in my bowl projections.

Following Tuesday’s penultimate College Football Playoff rankings, I’ll have a special Wednesday updated bowl projections. And plan accordingly — all of the bowl matchups officially will be announced on Sunday.

I have no comments about most of the proposed matchups other than saying I like the top 4. (do appreciate the attention to detail and research in explaining the complexities of getting to '82').

I LOVE it when the 4 CFP teams are from different regions, different leagues. AL vs. Ga might be really good football but who wants to see a SEC 'league game?'

I'm sure many agree. And P.S. no one wants to see a repeat of UofM vs. OSU, either.

RE: 2022 MAC Bowl Picture
For those hoping MSU would be one of the 5-7 teams that get in (thus setting up a potential EMU/MSU Quick Lane Bowl), it looks like there is about a 1% chance of them getting in. Brett McMurphy wrote this today regarding the last three bowl spots:

Quote:Right now, there are 79 bowl-eligible teams. Here’s how the final three bowl spots will be filled if:

-Buffalo defeats Akron; New Mexico State’s waiver is approved (this is what my projections have). The final three bowl spots: Buffalo, New Mexico State and Rice

-Buffalo defeats Akron; New Mexico State’s waiver is denied. The final three: Buffalo, Rice and UNLV

-Buffalo loses to Akron; New Mexico State’s waiver is approved. The final three: New Mexico State, Rice and UNLV

-Buffalo loses to Akron; New Mexico State’s waiver is denied. The final three: Rice, UNLV and Auburn (although Auburn, as of Wednesday, hasn’t decided if it would accept).

I highlight that last scenario because that is the only way MSU could get in. As we have talked about they use the APR rankings to determine which 5-7 teams get in should there not be enough .500 or better teams. As McMurphy points out, Auburn hasn't decided if they would accept a bid if they were to receive one. If they decline the next team on the list would be....Michigan State.

So basically to make a bowl Michigan State would need all of the following to happen:

1. New Mexico State's waiver to be denied (should know that tomorrow or Friday)
2. Buffalo to lose
3. Auburn to decline a bowl bid
4. Accept the bid themselves. I've seen quotes from Tucker that suggest they are also not 100% sure if they would accept or not, likely due to injuries and suspensions they have.

Yesterday's Athletic Bowl Predictor does indeed have us going to the Quick Lane Bowl.

And taking on Wisconsin.

RE: 2022 MAC Bowl Picture
There is some bowl news today that COULD impact who Eastern plays:

1) New Mexico State was granted their waiver and WILL be going to a bowl. That eliminates any hope of Michigan State making a bowl and an EMU/MSU matchup in the Quick Lane Bowl. That also means the Big Ten will stay at nine bowl teams meaning they won't have enough to fill their spot in the Quick Lane Bowl...

EXCEPT FOR....

2) There is a lot of noise that either the Rose Bowl or OSU/Utah do NOT want a OSU/Utah rematch this year, so you could see Penn State to the Rose Bowl and Ohio State to one of the other NY6 bowls.

How does that impact Eastern? Apparently, if the Rose Bowl skips Ohio State for Penn State it starts some kind of chain of events that leads to Notre Dame in the ReliaQuest (formally the Outback) Bowl which is normally a Big Ten slot. If that happens all the Big Ten teams would slip down a spot and one would fall to the Quick Lane.

The NY6 bowls are always the first announced Sunday morning, so basically if we see Penn State in the Rose (assuming OSU doesn't end up in the playoff) that means there will likely be a Big Ten team in the Quick Lane and that is who we would play should we be selected for that game.

A couple of reporters from The Athletic also stated that the Rose Bowl didn't take kindly to OSU for 1) not selling their ticket allotment last year and 2) having so many prime players opt out of playing the game.

I'm hearing the Cure Bowl and the Boca Raton Bowl are still strong possible destinations for the Eagles, with the QL, of course, and Arizona Bowl also in the mix.
